Greundiek (Greendyke): This LEGOŽ ship has been built in late 2003 for the "International System Creativity Contest" (ISCC III) at www.1000steine.de. *********************************************************************** THIS BRICKSHELF GALLERY CONTAINS ONLY PREVIEW PICTURES. FOR FULL STORY VISIT: http://www.fgltc.org/bwoabs/contest/iscc3a_eng.phtml *********************************************************************** The real ship Greundiek has been built in the late fourties and was one of the first of its kind with a completely welded hull (older steel ships have used rivets). This hull had a utterly advanced design at its time: it has a doubled bottom (for increased safety), a trawlers bow and a cruisers stern, which leads to a fuel saving "aerodynamic" overall design. The ship has ca. 349 gross register tons and the diesel engine delivers a horsepower of (only) 250, but that has been enough to overcome the dangerous passages over North and Baltic sea. The length of the real ship is 46 meters, the width 7.6 meters. The favoured destinations of the crew have been the UK (for cargo coal) and the Scandinavian countries for wood (and smuggling alcohol?). You may read more about the history of this ship under this interesting link (German language only): The homepage of the real motorship "Greundiek" http://www.landschaftsverband-stade.de/greundiek1.html (new address) www.kulturlandschaft.de/greundiek1.html (old and possibly offline now) Homepage of Dr. Heinz G. Klug (engineer + artist who works for the preservation of the "Greundiek") His page contains additional information and artwork around the "Greundiek": www.hg-klug.de/greun/greun.html a report in a local newsspaper in 2003 http://www.abendblatt.de/daten/2003/01/31/118775.html Note: The LEGOŽ-ship was built length-compressed in the area of the cargo compartment, but got prolonged later. As a funny sidenote I may mention, that the real one has been built shorter as it is nowadays as well. After an accident in the Baltic Sea (while the ship has still been quite new) it sank, but has been rescued and renewed then. At the same time the ship got prolonged to its actual length.
