My thoughts on Henery Lim. During the Lugola Meeting Sept. 8th 2001, I met some wonderful people. Among them was in particular was someone I admire a great deal; Henry Lim. I was very happy to meet him and talk about things we share in common. A kind and gentle man with a firey imagination and tenacity to create. During the meeting we talked about the funtionality of the Mech-bot. I was happy to show Henry as well as others the way in which my Robot moved. During our talk Henry took the time to check out the details and construction of the Mech-bot while it was present at the meeting. I was then graciously invited to visit Henry and see the utterly increadible works of art that he has created. I was thrilled at the oportunity. I walked into Henery Lim's apt. late at night after returning from Legoland after a 2 1/2 hour drive. I was glad he was up for company because when I entered his comfy home the sheer size of his creations became aparent. I always dreamed of seeing these wonderful works of Art before my own eyes and there they were larger than life and beautifully executed. The Stegasaurous increadibly built in his living room was awesome to behold. I trully felt it was more inspiring than anything I had witnessed at the official Legoland Theme park in Carlsbad just hours before. He invited me to look into the underside of the sculpture to see how it was constucted. Amazing! I said! Wow! To think of all the work involved, the sheer determination to complete a 14 foot long masterpiece. I tried to imagine how he built this as I have had a slightly simular experience in building a 6 foot long Praying Mantis. My work seems dwarfed by this gigantic work of Art. He admitted starting with a single brick that is contained within the eye and just continued from there. I wanted to know more but how can you explain such a wonderful proccess. I identified right away with the insight required to just build the sculpture as it comes from the inner eye of the artist. The enormity of the giant Stegasaurous was just awesome. The colors and the blending of slight patterns into the work is simply beautiful. I indeed felt honored to be in his presence. Another thing that rang true with me is the fact that this sculpture is sort of a calling card for him, his vision and his ability as an artist. I identified with this as I feel I too have become known for certain aspects of my Art. Although the exterior was created entirely of Bricks, the sculture has a sort of living movement. It seemed like the Stegasaurous was walking out of one room and was just entering another. It really seemed like it had a life all to it's own. The fun did'nt stop there! I soon found myself in awe of the Beetles mosaic that he has recently completed. The first thing I noticed is the increadible optical illusion that is created when viewing such and great execution of this relatively new style of building with Lego. The Beetles mosaic is wonderfully done. I guess choosing a great picture for the subject matter is part of what drew me to this work. Seeing all the detail and crafty skill involved was great. The mossaic is so nicely done. The use of all thoses little plates was stunning. Looking at how it was constucted was a real treat. For me seeing how all those pieces come together to create the likeness of these famous muscians was just wild. I noticed things like how the hair was done on each Beetle, how the clothing looked so real when you step back and let the mosaic come to life. It just plain made me happy. Amoung these two works I was treated to another work in progress that you will certainly be impressed with when Henry is ready to publish. Mums the word and trust is paramount. I also learned that Henry has worked with another great and much respected Artist; Eric Harshbarger. They have collaborated to produce a work to be published in a prestigous Forum yet to be announced as of this time. I was suitably impressed and genuinely happy for them both. I also learned that they are great friends, somthing I admire and wish them all the luck as they completely deserve it. In addition to the wonderful works Henry has created from Lego, I was happy to learn he loves music. In fact Mr. Lim is a musical composer. He creates original scores and has evan been asked to participate in some impressive projects. I was happy to receive his latest CD. I will surely listen to it as I myself build and work on my own endeavors. All of this said, I felt so happy to meet this wonderful Human Being. My drive to the hotel on the L.A. freeway at 2am was filled with thoughts of how lucky I am to meet him as well as others I truly cherish. Thank you Henry Lim and to all of those I have met during the weekend of September 8th.
