The R-Wing Heavy Assault Interdictor Fighter was developed 
during the war with the Yuuzhan Vong. It's primary purpose 
was as an Interdictor Fighter that could pull enemy ships 
out of hyperspace and hammer them with scaled down versions 
of the mighty turbo lasers found on the Imperial Star Destroyers. 

The secondary purpose in the design was to take advantage of 
the Yuuzhan Vong's hatred of anything technological by merging 
their organic lifeforms with Republic technology. The rear pod 
of the fighter is a heavily shielded section containing two dovin basals, 
the gravity generating creatures of the Yuuzhan Vong responsible 
for their ship's propulsion, shielding, and interdiction capabilities. 
These two creatures are maintained and cared for by specially trained 
grounds crews. In combat, the R7 unit can communicate with the 
dovin basals through a special interface to give them instructions 
during the battle. 

R-Wings are a somewhat cumbersome fighter and the power of one 
alone is not enough to generate an interdiction field strong enough 
to interfere with hyper-space travel.  As a result, R-Wings act in 
small squads of 4 ships, always accompanied by a more nimble fighter 
squadron of X-Wings or other combat fighters to help maintain safety 
when enemy ships suddenly drop out of hyper-space.
