The Saphire Sphere of the L3 macrostructure
is almost entirely underwater.
Freight vessels transport raw materials between submerged cities
and island spaceports. The protection of these ships is the job of the
SubSpace Police, an independent organization somewhat friendly to the
GnuTron Commonwealth and directly opposed to the DarkSea Pirates.
The SubSpace Police Outpost is a refueling stop for undersea freighters.
A large docking tower (bulk components obtained through the Auczilla
Building Supply (A.B.S.) Limited Liability Corporation) carries fuel from the
storage tanks to a docked freighter. Outpost status and communication are handled in the Command Center, a large rotating dome. A high-security jail is available to restrain captured DarkSea Pirates.
The watchtower houses most of the station's support infrastructure: computers, sensor controls, spread-resonant doppler sonar controls, and equipment storage.
The landing pads provide ready access to two patrol vehicles: a small one-man SeaMoth and a larger Sea Interceptor.
The security of the station is assured by the presence of three large anti-subcraft batteries, the largest of which can target ships on the ocean surface.
The main entrance to the outpost is in the center of three wings. (The
fourth wing is on hold pending a delivery from A.B.S.) The entrance
is actually a hole in the floor, through which you enter into the
pressurized atmosphere of the outpost. To the left is the watchtower, and access to the patrol ships. To the right is the Command Center wing. Straight back is the Jail.
While the actual outpost is air-tight, the model shown here has many of the walls missing to enhance access and playability.
This is the back of the station, and walkway to the jail.
We can see one of the officers escorting a DarkSea Pirate
droid to the holding cell and securing it.
The dark grey studded pieces on the rear walls are halfdome
pieces (like in set 6107) with the half dome removed.
The rear of the jail has a maintainance panel which can be used to
override the jail door controls.
In the center of the image is a large growth of the green subspace coral that grows in these regions.
The large round Command Center is the place to go to find important
people making important decisions. Equiped with the latest in holigraphic
communication panels, sensor read-outs and analysis chambers, officers
are given all the tactical information necessary to handle any situation:
from a damaged freighter having trouble docking, to a full scale raid
by the DarkSea Pirates.
Side walls of the Command Center have been removed to allow access to
the interior, leaving only the support struts.
The transport alcove can instantly transfer people and equipment
from the Command Center to any of the transport pads on the station.
This allows emergency backup to be delivered to all key areas of
the station in times of crisis.
Command Center staff are fully cross-trained in all areas of
station operation.
Below the Command Center is the Analysis Desk. Officer stop by
here to get assignments and read breaking news and information
on the monitors. Here we see an agent from the
Commonwealth station Zenon analyzing some intellgence data to
help track down a rogue terrorist believed to be operating in the
area.
Entrance or exit from the station can be through an airlock at the end of the command wing. A flat door on the inside is paired with a hinged canopy on the outside to form the airlock.
To assure the safety of freighters in the area, the outpost monitors and
collects communications between the DarkSea Pirates.
Here an agent is loading a spool of optical tape into the I/O unit of an A.B.S.-enhanced cryogenically cooled Jhereg4000 decryption engine to decypher recent activity.
Refueling of tankers is the main purpose of this outpost. Local
petro-organic fuel deposits are mined and stored in large holding
tanks. Since many freight ships are not designed to rest on a
flat surface, a docking tower extend high into the sea. Fuel is
delivered through the scaffolding and tubing.
Shown is a mid-size freight ship. Because of pirate activity, preference
is usually given to smaller, well armored transport ships. This ship
has two small storage areas under tight monitoring and control. They can
safely transport the most fragile and unstable materials, including
the highly reactive flourescent-orange crystals.
A bulk storage area in the rear can hold many barrels of items, or a
squad of marines.
Patrol craft monitor the area. The sensitive communication antennas
serve a dual role. They are used to search for lost ships as well as
capture messages sent between DarkSea Pirate vessels.
The twin digging cannons on the front of the Sea Interceptor are used to clear silt from wrecked ships, but also serve as a formidable defense against pirate vessels.
