1967 Locomotive --------------- This locomotive was created to pull my wife's Christmas gift (a Brionvega "cube" FM Radio) from the bedroom to the Christmas tree across the living-room. Since the radio is pretty heavy, the locomotive needed lots of power and traction. The inspiration was given by an old idea book of the 60s, where two 8-wide trains using multiple 4,5 motors can be seen (many thanks to the Railbricks Magazine). The model is not inspired by one real locomotive, it's more a "patchwork" of many locomotives: 1) FS E626, for its regular truck disposition (BoBoBo). 2) DB Class 194, for its boxy look which I like a lot. The first "multicolor" prototype was made with normal bricks of the 80s. It was created in order to test: 1) The "double" traction; 2) The maximum lenght of the locomotive; 3) The maximum turning radius of the two motors, which is strictly related to the lenght of the locomotive; 3) The articulation for the central truck, which is not motorized and should be able to move sideways; 4) The double battery box, one for lights and one for the engines (so a stopped locomotive can have lights turned on). As you can see it was too tall, but it worked fine. I decided to use LDRAW to create the project, using only bricks available in the 60s. So I ordered all the bricks on Ebay and I began building the final one, which has some different details from the project and the prototype. First of all the battery box is single, since I ordered two battery boxes, but only one was working. In order to prevent the weight distribution on the central truck only (resulting in a loss of traction), I made it free to move sideways and up/down. It has no real function, the locomotive works perfectly without it. It's only a "cosmetic" feature. :D :D :D I used old couplings (in early 60s there were no magnets) which are reliable and strong. The two pantographs have been modified several times. At present day they are yellow, made only by 1x4 and 1x3 plates. I'll add the new photos ASAP. Hope you like it!
