The case for Midi Scale Although I didn't invent the term, I was using it before Lego introduced the midi-scale Millenium Falcon. For me, Midi is between the Micro-scale and Minifig-scale (mini approx 1 ft/stud), usually about 1/2 Minifig Scale for those models that are doable. i.e. a midi-scale ISD is still a pretty big beastie! For me, this started when I was attempting to build a minifig scale F-22 and lamenting my lack of bley parts. To build most vehicles accurately, you need to get the cockpit glass or wheels correct and the rest you can make up as you go along. At this point I noticed that the 2x2 Curved Slope was a good match for cockpit glass for most modern day fighter jets in the midi scale and away I went... One of the main advantages with this scale is it still allows for an accurate representation and I think the models are more 'playable' by those young at heart. Midi-scale still allows your kids to play with your models using minifigs though you obviously can't put the fig inside, though the scale is not too different. Midis are more swishable and can be more robust and better bang for your buck as you can build a lot more models in midi than you can in mini. In some cases this scale actually brings into play a number of models from Lego that by chance are more midi-scale that minifig scale. The best examples of these are some of the Star Wars models like the Millenium Falcon (4504) and the AT-AT (4483). Remember Lego has done a minifig scale of the MF (10179), and it is a grand beastie, but you can easily see the difference in scale. My Midi X-Wing is half the diameter of the 4504 MF, which is about spot-on going by their 'real' sizes. Unfortunately this is where I think Lego has got it wrong as they already had a midi-scale MF, and the one they have offically produced is too small, at least for my creations. Lego could produce more of this scale as I think it provides a more accessable/afforable way to build up 'collections' of models. You could more easily recreate the Battle of Hoth or the Battle of Yavin using my midi-scale models without breaking the bank and your storage space at home. For my aircraft they could almost be as collectable as Matchbox cars and I already have Weapon Packs (Air-Air; Air-Ground) as add-ons, and additional functionality like detachable undercarriage etc. I am really enjoying working in this scale and don't seem to be running out of inspiration anytime soon. I have built or have plans for all of the models listed below. Pics will be forthcoming on all...soon...brink on!
