FERRARI LEGO MOSAIC The mosaic-picture was made by three friends for the 1000Steine-land 2003, Berlin. All of us is work as computer graphician (dtp), and we are experienced in making and manipulating pixel-graphics. We were curious: if we can make a really impressive (and big sized) mosaic. The building itsef wasn`t easy, but before that we needed a good plan for it. The previous works were made with Photoshop (for manipulating and converting the original picture), CorelDraw and an 1:1 sized paper print (for the building). We created a fix palette with the available colors of LEGO bricks, for converting the pictures to these colors, and made a Photoshop Action for automatise the conversion from the truecolor picture to the paletted and transformed picture. (transforming is needed baceuse the pixels are not square). This phase of the work is the most important, beacuse the outcome`s look depends on it. After the conversion came the analisys of the mosaic: what size, what color, how much bricks we need from the used types. The hardest thing was get the needed quantity of the bricks. The Ferrari picture is about 50.000 1x1 lego brick`s area. We suggest if somebody want to create mosaic like our Ferrari, try it in grayscale and not too big size for the first time! We used 19 colors for this mosaic. The 98% of the bricks were common color and easy to obtain, but there were some, which was hard to find on the market. The building was about 10 days for 3 of us, daily about 6-8 hours. Did it worth? We think Yes! With this technique, we can generate a LEGO Mosaic from almost all digital picture. There are two types of mosaic in our view, the grayscale and color. (The grayscale bricks much more easier to collect in big amounts.) The most important thing for a great outcome is the choosing a very good original picture. (good perspective, good lights, good combination of colors, resolution) In this folder you can find a few pictures of the building process, the original picture and ideas what converted. (And waiting for the analisys collecting bricks and building) I hope we can inspire many fans of LEGO to try to make their own creations. We are waiting for questions, suggestions, ideas....
