Francis turns around to face the lieutenant, and salutes him. FRANCIS Yessir! LIEUTENANT You had volunteered for the reconnaissance mission FRANCIS Yes, that is correct, sir. Angled shot of the lieutenant. LIEUTENANT We are prepared to depart. Gather your gear and meet at the south entrance. FRANCIS Yessir. The lieutenant and Francis turn towards opposite directions, i.e. Francis to the right, the lieutenant to the left, and walk off screen. SCENE 5 Exterior shot. The abandoned buildings and the tank are clearly seen, but the soldiers are seen as silhouettes. Soldiers climb into the tank and the tank drives off. Other soldiers march in the distance. He looks back. LIEUTENANT Mr. Smith! MR. SMITH advances toward the lieutenant. MR. SMITH Yes, sir. LIEUTENANT Do you have your infrared binoculars? MR. SMITH As always, sir. LIEUTENANT See if you can spot the entrance. Mr. Smith gets out his infrared binoculars from his pack and puts them to his eyes. A green glow emits from the view of the binoculars. Shot from the view of the binoculars. It is a green interface, with white lines depicting the border, and a three digit number on the bottom describing the distance from the target. The view moves around several times, then rests upon a rectangular-like reading, possibly the entrance. The number "93.4" reads on the bottom. Return to medium shot. Mr. Smith puts down the binoculars. MR. SMITH The entrance is about 100 meters ahead, sir. LIEUTENANT Very good, Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith puts his binoculars back in his pack. The Lieutenant swing swings his arm around one full rotation forward. The soldiers advance. Shot of the entrance, camouflaged. The six soldiers approach. MR. SMITH The entrance should be - right here, sir. LIEUTENANT Hughes, Currie: Prepare to "open" the hatch. HUGHES and CURRIE chuckle. They know what "open" means in this situation. HUGHES Yessir. (chuckles) CURRIE Yes, sir. (chuckles, near-cackle) Hughes and Currie approach the door. They extract from their packs a box-like device and a plunger detonator. Hughes places the plunger down and helps Currie with placing the explosive. After it is placed, Hughes and Currie race towards the plunger. They fight over who gets to detonate it. The soldiers begin to back away from the door, with only two, including Francis, with weapons drawn, stepping to the sides of the entrance to prepare for any security. CURRIE It's mine turn to blow it up! HUGHES No, you did it last time! LIEUTENANT (off-screen, yelling) Mr. Hughes, Mr. Currie! Hughes and Currie immediately stop and look ahead towards the lieutenant. LIEUTENANT (off screen) Why don't you activate the explosives together to cease wasting our most PRECIOUS TIME?! CURRIE Yes sir. HUGHES Oh, yes, sir. The two then push down on the plunger. SCENE 7 Interior shot of the enemy base, just inside the entrance. Two guards are standing by the door, one on each end, each with a rifle. The shot remains like this for 2-3 seconds, then the entrance explodes, causing the guards to react.  They stumble forward a bit, then turn around to see what's happened. GUARD #1 What the - They take their rifles and aim out the door, but it's too late. The two soldiers standing by now act, pouring gunfire and grenades into the base, killing the guards. Once the smoke clears, all six soldiers are visible, standing guard with weapons in hand. They hold this pose for three seconds, then advance inside the base, quiet-like. Two of the soldiers (Mr. Smith and Hughes) take the uniforms from the fallen guards and put them on themselves. Then they join the rest of the group. Rear shot of the group. They see the Control Room straight ahead, guarded by 8-10 guards. They are, of course, hiding behind a corner. They get out their weapons and charge toward the guards, who are also armed. They quickly shoot off five (5) of the guards, and Hughes is shot shortly after this starts. Not long after that, all the guards are defeated, except for one, which starts to run down the hall towards his superiors. Francis quickly shoots him, and the guard falls dead, sliding a bit. LIEUTENANT Well done, Mr. Goodwin. FRANCIS Thank you, sir. The remaining reconnaissance soldiers progress towards the control centre entrance. As they approach the door, the panel to the right of the door turns red and reads, "Password Required". COMPUTER Please enter your authorization password. Currie takes his machine gun and fires at the control panel. After he stops firing, the panel turns green and it reads "Access Granted" COMPUTER Password accepted. The door slides open, and the soldiers rush into the room. SCENE 8 Interior shot of the Control Room. Lighted displays encircle the room. The lieutenant advances toward the front of the group. LIEUTENANT Well done, gentlemen. Now, we must- Gunshot. The bullet goes through the lieutenant's left chest. Blood spurts from his wound. The lieutenant does a "Wilhelm Scream" and falls back. The rest take action, having their weapons at the ready. Head on shot of the Control Room guards running towards the reconnaissance soldiers. CONTROL ROOM GUARD 1 Stop them! CONTROL ROOM GUARD 2 Blast them to oblivion! Return to shot of the reconnaissance battalion. They charge towards the guards. Francis takes out his gun and spins the revolver. FRANCIS This is where the fun begins. He then continues with the others. Mr. Smith runs head on to a guard, firing bullets consecutively along the way. As the guard falls, Mr. Smith "liberates" the guard of his fire arm. Mr. Smith then uses both guns to fire ahead. Overhead shot of the main security "hub". Currie is on one side, Control Room Guard 2 on the other. They try to chase each other around the "hub" much like in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, where Jack and Davy Jones try to chase each other around the Kraken Hammer. Eventually, Currie simply jumps on top, so does the guard, but by the time the guard gets on top, Currie shoots him in the chest. The guard fall to the ground. Shot of Mr. Smith and Francis back-to-back, firing in their respective directions. Francis turns his head towards Mr. Smith FRANCIS Take the rest of the team out of here. I'll get the data. MR. SMITH Yes, sir. Mr. Smith now fires twice more, then runs for the exit. So do the others (Currie and R.J.). Francis then approaches the data terminal and is about to push the button to eject the tape, when he hears a yell. His head jerks to his left. He gets his gun out, ready, and another Control Room Guard emerges out of the darkness. Francis fires twice at the guard, and the guard falls to the ground. Francis returns his attention to the terminal. Once again, he hears someone running towards him. He looks back at the dead guard. Another guard runs to his side and checks his pulse. Francis notices this, steps back from the console and gets out his gun, and spins the revolver. He turns to the left and points the gun at the darkness. FRANCIS (Stern) You. Francis cocks his gun. The guard hears this, and freezes. FRANCIS (Stern) Stand up. The guard does this, and slowly stands up above the dead body. FRANCIS Come here. The guard obeys this as well, and advances. Up until now, his face has been shrouded in the darkness of the shadow. But as he walks towards Francis, it is revealed that he is BRIAN, Francis' old childhood friend. Francis lowers his gun, looking like he had just seen a ghost. FRANCIS Brian... Brian chuckles. BRIAN Francis. Brian now laughs. It is clear that in his eight years in Germany, he has gain a German accent. BRIAN So... Brian now begins to walk around Francis, who now has his BRIAN ...you've made it into the war. Francis is still stunned. FRANCIS Brian... BRIAN Speechless, are you? (chuckle) I would suspect you would be. Since we haven't had any contact, physical or otherwise, for eight years. Francis is no longer stunned. FRANCIS Eight years, eh? BRIAN That's right. Eight years. Ninety-seven months. Four hundred and seventeen weeks. Two thousand, nine hundred and twenty-two days. Seventy thousand, one hundred and twenty-eight hours. Four million, two hundred and seven thousand, six hundred and eighty minutes. Brian spreads his arms to his sides. BRIAN But who's counting? FRANCIS I'm supposing you were. BRIAN Naturally. Brian continues to circle Francis, this time making his way to the control panel in the process. BRIAN But, seeing as I am your friend, and as I promised on that fateful day, "not even a third world war would destroy our friendship", I'll decide to let you go... At this point, Brian has reached the control panel, and he enters the pass code to eject the data disk. The disk ejects, and Brian removes it from its slot. He then extends his arm towards Francis. BRIAN ...and let you leave with what you came for. Francis is bewildered. FRANCIS What are you doing? BRIAN What's wrong? Don't you trust me, Francis? FRANCIS Of course I do. BRIAN Then take it. Francis hesitates for a few seconds, then takes the disk. Brian puts his arm to his side. BRIAN You`d better leave. Before reinforcements arrive. Francis makes his way for the entrance., but Brian stops him. BRIAN But remember this, Francis: Francis turns his head towards Brian. BRIAN When next we meet, and the war is not over, I WILL kill you. FRANCIS (2 second pause) Agreed. Francis then turns around and runs out of the Control Room. BRIAN Some day... FADE INTO NEXT SHOT SCENE 9 The reconnaissance tank speeds away from the German base, with the headlights on. It is running faster, now than there are less people riding in it. Interior view. Francis is sitting on one side, Mr. Smith, Currie and R.J. on the other. FRANCIS I'M the new lieutenant?! MR. SMITH Yes, sir. Although I am the Lieutenant's second-in-command, I feel no need for the responsibility that comes with the rank. I am therefore passing the promotion onto you. FRANCIS Well, I'm flattered, Mr. Smith, but- MR. SMITH Please take the position, Mr. Goodwin. I've no desire for it. Francis hesitates about this decision. FRANCIS Alright, then. Mr. Smith smiles lightly. DRIVER Sir, we're about 20 minutes from our base. FRANCIS Very good. SCENE 10 The reconnaissance tank arrives at the base. Everyone inside exits and walks inside, except for the driver, who drives the tank away to park it. SCENE 11 Interior of the hallway. Francis walks down, with the memories of the last two hours hanging heavily in his mind. BRIAN (Francis' thinking) When next we meet, and the war is not over, I WILL kill you. FRANCIS (Thinking) Then our friendship is truly over. Mr. Smith approaches Francis. MR. SMITH Mr. Goodwin? FRANCIS Yes, Mr. Smith? MR. SMITH The commander would like to see you on a matter of utmost importance. FRANCIS Thank you. Mr. Smith walks away, and Francis adjusts his course towards the Commander's quarters. SCENE 12 Interior, Commander's Quarters. The commander is sitting at his desk, reading a map. Francis, outside, knocks on the door. COMMANDER Come in. Francis opens the door, and proceeds inside. FRANCIS You wanted to see me, sir? COMMANDER Ah, yes, Mr. Goodwin. Come in. Francis proceeds even further, and sits down in the chair across from the commander's desk. COMMANDER After reviewing the data you had retrieved for us... The commander holds up the data disk Francis had retrieved the day before. COMMANDER ...we have discovered the German's next move. FRANCIS And what is it? The commander now stands up. COMMANDER It appears that the Germans plan to detonate an atomic bomb in the United States. FRANCIS But that is against the guidelines set out by the Geneva Convention! COMMANDER Yes, it was. But it appears that they are planning to break the rules anyway. FRANCIS How could they have made a proper bomb? Wouldn't they have to test it? COMMANDER They already have. They tested one out in southern Russia. It killed 2 million people. They plan to execute this plan in 60 hours. FRANCIS Two days? Francis stands up, in disbelief. FRANCIS That's impossible. COMMANDER It would seem so. But, they have invaded northern Russia and plan to fly over the Arctic Circle and bomb the US. Francis sits back down. COMMANDER I'm assigning you and a team of my best operatives to enter Russia and, "throw a monkey wrench into the mix," as you would say. FRANCIS But, why me, sir? COMMANDER Who else, but the person who infiltrated the enemy base and retrieved this information? FRANCIS That's true, but- COMMANDER Plus, Mr. Smith says you told everyone else to leave so you, yourself, could retrieve this disk, and not risk everyone else's life. FRANCIS That is true. COMMANDER Then I think this job is suitable for you, then. You are dismissed. Francis stands up. COMMANDER You will leave tonight. Francis leaves the room. COMMANDER I wish you luck. Francis closes the door behind him. SCENE 13 Exterior, German base. Show time card saying, `12 hours later`. The operatives and Francis approach the German stronghold. SCENE 14 Interior of the stronghold. Francis peeks inside and waves the operatives in. They march inside, and Francis follows. They walk down the hall, then proceed into the, `Launch Room`. Once inside, the operatives approach the bomb with caution. One removes part of the shell, revealing blinking lights. He begins to operate, getting out wire cutters. All of the sudden, one of the operatives is shot, falls down, and the rest turn sharply and see that 5 guards are approaching them. They begin to fire, yet the only one to survive is Francis. He takes the wire cutters from the operative and continues the operation. Half-way through, he hears marching in the hallway. He turns around - there he sees Brian, gun drawn. Francis is stunned. BRIAN Ohoho. Look who`s just shown up. It`s the tarnished knight. Francis gets out his gun. FRANCIS What do you want, Brian? BRIAN Don`t you remember what I said before? Brian begins to shoot. He misses the first few times, but Francis picks up the piece of the bomb shell and uses it as a shield. Brian stops shooting. BRIAN (chuckles) Well done. Francis drops the shell. BRIAN But you`ve always forgotten that I- Francis shoots Brian in the chest. Brian backs away, and slumps to the floor behind the door. In shock, Francis drops his gun. Suddenly, a German General walks through, and starts yelling. GERMAN GENERAL What are you doing here? You`re not - AUGH! Gunshot. Francis did not shoot, because he dropped his gun on the floor. As the General falls over, it is revealed that Brian fired the shot from his position, sitting up slightly. He then falls back again. Francis runs over to Brian, now covered in blood. Francis props Brian`s head up. FRANCIS C`mon, buddy, stay with me. Please... BRIAN (faint) One...one...thirty-eight... FRANCIS What? BRIAN One one three eight. That is the ... (coughs) ... self destruct code ... for the bomb. Enter the code ... and get out of here. FRANCIS I`m not leaving without you. BRIAN Yes, you can. Please ... just save yourself. Francis hesitates, then leaves Brian to go to the control panel. He enters the code, `1138`, then goes for the exit. He hesitates, looking at Brian, then picks him up and slings him on his back. He then runs out of there. SCENE 15 Exterior. Several German soldiers and officers run out of the building, with red lights and a "Self Destruct" message blaring in the building. Soon after the German personnel, Francis exits the stronghold. Once Francis reaches a hill high up, he stops, and the building explodes. Francis turns around.
