[May 31, 2005] This is an informal brief of my work named "remake of 8458-3" Creating something new-and-original was not easy for me, and so I decided to "remake" something else that existed already. I hoped to learn building techniques and shaping skills during the "remake" Among many models, I targeted the famous sportscar of Nathanael Kuipers known as 8458-3. While maintaining the shape of 8458-3, I set some key aspects of remake as follows 1) Studless structure 2) Modular build 3) More sturdy 4) Easier dis-assemble I started in April 2005 and finished on May 23, 2005. I wrote "creation review" on a Korean community site(www.brickinside.com) on May 24, 2005. [A] Studless structure It was not easy to build studless chassis because liftarms are weak against "twist" while technic bricks are very strong in that respect. [B] Modular build Main modules are FrontSuspension, RearSuspension, Engine, Chassis and there are more shaping modules such as bumpers, MovingEngineHood, bonnet, etc. The merit of modular build was much more than I expected at the start. For example, the chassis was fully re-designed from InProgress-version of 20050511. But in that re-design of chassis, suspension modules were kept almost the same. Modular build made this project be finished in one month. At the start, I expected about 6~12 months. Of course, modular build requires more parts and more space. Modular build disables compact product such as 8453. But, the flexibility and expandibility of modular build cannot be ignored on the other hand. [C] More sturdy Chassis is less sturdy than the original 8458-3 because of studless structure. Other modules are built somewhat more sturdy.(but not quite much) [D] Easier dis-assemble Modular build naturally supplies easiness of dis-assemble. Other than modular build, I adopted some tips to make it easier for dis-assemble but.. these tips are not easy to see in the photos. Overall shape is similar to the original 8458-3 of Nathanael Kuipers. Comparison photos for some different parts are seen in the folder. Hip, WindowAndDrivingRoom, Door. Suspension modules are different from the original, but there's no comparison photo. My work is... not a creation, but a "remake". The structure can be regarded as my creation but the shape design is still that of Nathanael Kuipers. My remake cannot be called as a model of 8458 either. It cannot be made with parts of single 8458 set. Actually, important parts came from 2x 8386, 8436, 8466, and from sorted boxes. My next task with this remake is... building instructions. I am not sure when. Because.. I should learn CAD first. sunsky@paxnet.co.kr May 31, 2005 Jaeho Jung
