When the Jedi were still the protecters of the galaxy and when the Sith were (thought to be) gone, the Jedi used small vessels like the Delta Wing to fight of any enemies. 

2 small lasers and 2 torpedo tubes make up it's weaponry. The Jedi pilot lies on it's back, where he (or she) relies on the Force to guide the ship. A darkened window is more to just to help young padawans, who have not fully mastered the Force. 

The roof of the ship opens up for the Jedi to crawl out. 2 small engines provide thrust and the wings are fixed with repulsor engines to manouver the ship. 

The ship was replaced by a smaller, more comfortable build ship at around 570 BY.
