The Magellan is the flagship of the United Space's fleet of light long range vessels used for charting the fringes of the terran civilisation. Whilst deep space probes perform initial exploration, it is the charting vessels that actually follow returned probe data and create precise navigational and hyperspace charts, along with planning of locations most suitable for navigational beacons. The extremely powerful forward passive/active scanner array performs 99% of data collation - charting officers brag about detecting a fighter craft at 5 light years. There are times, however, when this complex system is inadequate and first hand localised reports are necessary - thus the Magellan is able to launch its own short range scanner probes from the port and starboard launchers mounted amidships. As a working scientific military vessel the Magellan is not designed with crew comfort in mind. It lacks any artifical gravity systems and other than the four bunks (one crew member must always be on watch) there is little other free space.
