Goodbye.

I won’t be posting on this blog for a while…possibly not again at all. My writing has always been clear and intentional, yet I’ve found myself constantly forced to over-explain due to persistent misinterpretation. This isn’t a matter of communication on my end; it’s an issue with how others read and engage with nuance. My style is consistent, direct, and precise. Unfortunately, clarity means little when the audience chooses to project rather than understand.

What makes this untenable is not disagreement, but the kind of accusations I’ve received, terms like “sexist” or “prejudiced against ace people”, which bear no resemblance to who I am or what I express. These are not minor misunderstandings, they are character misjudgments rooted in careless or deliberately reductive readings. And because I find these labels deeply troubling, I can’t simply shrug them off.

What was meant to be a light space, a place to muse on fictional dynamics, to share thoughts and interpretations…has become exhausting. When every post demands disclaimers or defensive footnotes just to avoid willful misreadings, it stops being worth it. I never asked for consensus, only for the space to reflect.

So I’m stepping back. I’ll be deciding whether to make this blog private or abandon it altogether. Thank you to those who’ve sent kind words and understood what this was about. That has always meant more than you know.

Thank you for so many thoughtful messages. On another note, I do plan to continue Rotten Meat, or at least Mia’s story <3.

I have been summoned in the tags, and I accept coming back just to help out with this topic in the way I can. But he obviously isn’t truly behaving like an actual therapist.

The therapist acts as a mirror, not a moralizer in phenomenology. Hannibal does this exquisitely, holding space for taboo content as if it were just another facet of being. Instead of diagnosing, he helps patients articulate their own internal world more clearly, often by rephrasing it with symbolic or poetic language.

Death, meaning, choice, freedom, alienation, all of these are explored directly, not pathologized.

He’s not immoral but sort of amoral. This fits the existential therapist’s refusal to impose social norms or values onto the client’s truth.

Think of Binswanger, Rollo May, or even Irvin Yalom—but stripped of any humanist sentimentality lol.

Hannibal’s therapeutic style could be described as existential-phenomenological with a Jungian-symbolic overlay, and traces of Lacanian method, but none of the moral or corrective postures common to Freudian or behavioral traditions.

He’s less an analyst and more a philosopher-guide, leading patients into deeper self-understanding without the pretense of cure. What he offers isn’t safety, but lucidity.

How to write a daddy Hannigram fic that doesn't romanticize incest and these "possessive daddy" dynamics this fandom trues to pass as just them being protective?

offspringofmadness:

Well, there is a persistent cultural narrative that celebrates the image of the “possessive father”, the one who declares his daughter “off-limits,” who polices her relationships, and who wears his jealousy like a badge of honor. On the surface, this is often framed as protective love.

Some ideas:

- A study group: I always received requests about resources or how I write the essays, how I research, and the group could function as a place to study Hannibal-adjacent topics.

- A digital mind palace: we could share the aesthetics of our inner spaces, share techniques about our mind palaces.

Gonna be needing you to elaborate on the dad Will headcanon 👀

being a little puritan and shaming shit on the HANNIBAL fandom is quite the audacity, I gotta say. I mean the goddamn source material is dark af. There’s incest there. There’s fucking murder, cannibalism, but GOD FORBID fans explore that as well—oh go fuck yourself, sincerely

Shaming, particularly in the realm of kink or sexuality, is rarely about the object of shame. It is, more often, an act of projection. The individual doing the shaming encounters in another person a quality or expression they have learned to repress within themselves. Rather than confronting this internal conflict, they externalize it. They attempt to regulate their inner world by exerting control over the outer one, by silencing, mocking, or moralizing against the behavior that stirs their own disowned desires.

In psychological terms, this is a mechanism of defense. The shamer projects the unacceptable part of their own psyche onto someone else, and then punishes that person in an effort to distance themselves from the uncomfortable truth. This is not limited to kink; it appears wherever liberation confronts repression. The one who shames is often not disturbed by the act itself, but by the fact that someone else has given themselves permission to express something they themselves have buried. It is an affront not to decency, but to the fragile walls of their own self-containment.

In this dynamic, control becomes the strategy. If the other can be silenced, ridiculed, or coerced into shame, then the shamer does not have to witness the mirror. But what they attack is precisely what they have not integrated. The energy they direct outward is a symptom of an internal split, an unresolved tension between desire and identity. And so, shaming reveals more about the inner state of the shamer than it does about the one being shamed. It is not a statement of morality, but of psychic fragmentation.

Where one is whole, there is no need to shame.

Milk, any tips on how to interpret dreams properly?

offspringofmadness:

Dreams should never be interpreted by using general symbolism, such as “snakes mean you will be betrayed”. Dreams speak in the language of your personal universe, so every symbol has a personal meaning. To understand what it is, you must ask yourself what that symbol made you feel in the dream. Then ask yourself how the dream emotions, and reactions might mirror in your awakened state and reality.

If we use Will as an example, and make up a dream that offers more than the ones on the show, we could have him dreaming of a stag, drowning in a river. He is desperately trying to save it, then he sees the black antlers hovering over the water, and suddenly the river becomes blood red.

The stag (animal) is Will’s companion. He feels a sense of guidance whenever that stag shows up. It also dies in Mizumono. So the stag is most likely Will’s guardian in his psyche, in his personal dictionary. It drowning might indicate Will’s sense of loss of control and safety. That safety being threatened by the Stagman, who is Will’s daimon, always showing up as a being he wants to dominate, but is also afraid of and intrigued by. That’s usually our daemon.

The river of course is Will’s safe place, it almost indicates that his sense of control and safety is fading away and being tainted by “blood”, which Will equates to violence but also to erotic impulse.

In his awakened life this mirrors his feelings towards his impulses and externalized in Hannibal and other killers/people he thinks are bad.

By desperately trying to save the stag he reveals that the loss of control is terrifying to him, and that he isn’t ready for it.

It does seem very strange that people who supposedly love the neo-gothic murder show would reject fictitious portrayals or meta-discussions of things that are shocking.

Because of the limitations of network TV, the creators of Hannibal worked in visual and narrative metaphor. Yes, the ortolan eating was a mutual blowjob, a vanilla sex act. Why wouldn’t there be metaphorical portrayals of things that are far more forbidden?

I think we can acknowledge that Garrett Jacob Hobbs was sublimating the incest taboo by killing and eating girls who looked like the daughter he was pathologically attached to. Look at how defensive Will becomes when Jack asks about why the dead girls weren’t sexually violated – he knows what’s up.

Hannibal ate his sister because it was the only way to possess her after death. That level of transgressive attachment would have found some other outlet had she survived. We see that plainly in the conclusion of the novel, Hannibal, when Clarice becomes his sister/lover.

I’m not saying these metaphors on the show are merely a censored substitute for the literal transgressions, but they evoke them.

On the topic of rape, what on earth do we think that Hannibal was doing when he forced a tube down Will’s throat, or when he stabbed him, or when he drugged him and cut him open in Dolce? One body-envelope violation stands in for another.

Let’s acknowledge that Mason Verger is a foil for Hannibal, because what he does and wants to do is vulgar, not refined. Both are utterly amoral creatures with money and power. Nothing is beyond them.

I’m just really perplexed by fans who can’t deal with this stuff.

Finally someone had the nerve to talk about Mason and Hannibal.

Mason served as a poor pissed juxtaposition. Simply because he was disgusting in a way that wasn’t refined.

Also, the whole “candy/chocolate” thing is crazy because I’ve seen many people not realize what it meant. So how can someone argue about the show’s metaphors when they didn’t even had the either nerves or permission to say “he is a rapist, a pedophile” straight up?

The problem with nbc Hannibal is that it is so insanely indirect and riddled with metaphor that a lot of people who lack media literacy cannot understand anything the show was trying to say, and they judge those who try to. But honestly it is a bit tiring just how indirect it is with certain things and not indirect with others that benefit a commercialized agenda. Re: lesbian sex between attractive women but not gay sex; useless heterosexual explicit romantic links, but no gay explicit romantic links even though that’s the undercurrent of the show.

What's your take on Will's "empathy disorder" as a psychologist?

Coming back to answer this because it bothers me a little. I think the misunderstanding of this is what makes people see Will as a poor little meow meow.

Hannibal was either lying or the script lacked a good sense of psychology, when he says Will has an empathy disorder that he can’t “help but merge” with anyone.

The show presents Will’s “empathy disorder” as if it were a preternatural permeability, a sort of psychic transference, but it’s more of a refined skill honed by pattern recognition and the capacity for immersive role-play. He doesn’t indiscriminately merge with everyone, he selectively enters the minds of those he deems as kindred, specifically those whose violence and deviance resonate with the parts of him. it’s more of an imagination-driven capacity. Will’s process is less about feeling what others feel and more about constructing what they might have felt, based on the fragments of information he collects. It’s an act of imaginative synthesis, not passive absorption.

The ritualized trance he uses to reconstruct the scenes is a self-induced hypnotic state, suggesting it’s controlled and deliberate, not an unstoppable flood. The problem is that he can’t let go of the possibilities he entertains and he’s haunted by them because his mind loops around the horror of “what if I’m like them?” It’s less empathy in the traditional sense, and more about a deeply obsessive engagement with the idea of the killer’s mind.

Empathy is an idea we use to name something that’s really a more complex interplay of projection, pattern recognition, and your own sensitivity. In some people, these imaginative acts become so vivid that they feel like a direct experience of another’s pain. But there’s no external force, no real “absorption.” It’s the mind playing out possibilities with such intensity that the body responds as if those possibilities are real. Empathy isn’t a freestanding thing, it’s an emergent property of how you imagine and interpret others’ lives.

And it’s definitely not some random psychic power he was born with. This overwhelming “empathy” is a survival adaptation. If as a child you were forced to read others’ moods to stay safe, like anticipating a parent’s anger or a caretaker’s neglect, your mind might have grown accustomed to living in others’ emotional landscapes. It’s not empathy as a moral or spiritual quality, it’s vigilance, hyper-awareness, and an attempt to control unpredictable situations by knowing others completely. It’s a survival skill, not an altruistic feeling.

Trauma can prime someone to have this overwhelming, almost compulsive “empathy.” But it’s not empathy in the sense of clean, altruistic feeling…it’s trauma-driven self-absorption masquerading as connection. It’s a powerful, and often distressing, illusion the mind creates.
