What is your least favorite scene from the show, Milk? Care to ramble on it? I love your takes :)

I think there are no unnecessary scenes in the show, for the low budget they had, they truly did not waste screen time, so my least fav scene is simply because I dislike watching it, and unfortunately, it’s nothing different, I’m sure most of you have the same least fav one, which is Hannibal and Alana having sex.

My reasons might be different though. I don’t simply dislike it because the pairing is obnoxious, but because for an aesthetic show, known and praised for its beautiful photography, those scenes are really lacking. And I don’t believe it was on purpose, since Bryan Fuller was very insistent with every shot being aesthetically pleasing and following the “grotesque beauty” of the show. Yet, because network television has so much censorship and rules in regards to the human body and what can and cannot be shown, that scene (and all sex scenes on the show, actually) looked a bit unpleasing, comparing to the overall style of the show.

The way they positioned the actors to cover up specific body parts made their bodies, specially Caroline’s look stiff and strange; the sheets all over them are a bit ridiculous, too. Their skin looked ghastly and sweaty in a non-sexy way and it’s just not at all sensual, sexy or attractive. And I’ll say it again, I don’t think they meant for the scene to look bad. Bryan Fuller has commented many times how he likes to add sexiness to the show, specially when it comes to Mads, so I believe they did try to make it look interesting, but it ended up (to me) looking gross and it made it evident that that was acting, which should never happen in film and television, but that scene always takes me out, it’s like I can see all of them pretending to have sex in front of cameras, it’s so unnatural (and not purposefully so).

If the goal was to make it look superficial and lacking in connection, there were many ways of doing that visually without making it look fake, because it might’ve been devoid of love and passion but it was real. So I dislike the way that scene was shot and directed and edited.

The lesbian scene reinforces my argument because it did not look good, either, even though the couple was supposed to be a real couple who truly loved each other. They looked absolutely unnatural, too done up and just overall fake.
