Husband Will makes me unwell, Lamb. Every time I see him with that ring in season three 👹 but why? I need to be psychoanalyzed

something something triangulation

From a Lacanian perspective, desire is structured around the Other not the actual person, but the symbolic role or position they occupy. So desire is fundamentally “the desire of the Other,” meaning it arises in relation to the Other’s desire and the ways that desire is structured through language, culture, and symbolic order.

When someone is married, their status as “unavailable” is part of that symbolic order. The fact that they’re desired or claimed by another creates a scenario where their desirability is amplified: it becomes a signifier of worth, of allure. In Lacanian terms, the married person can be seen as a kind of objet petit a, the elusive object-cause of desire that can never fully be possessed. It’s not the person themselves that’s truly desired, but the fantasy or lack that they represent.

The presence of the spouse or partner becomes the third term that triangulates desire: it’s through this triangulation that the desire is sustained and intensified. This also ties into Lacan’s idea that desire is not direct, but always mediated by the desire of the Other so if a married person is desired by their spouse, that “desire of the Other” acts as a beacon, making the married person more desirable to a third party.

In this way, desire for married people can be seen as a structural effect, rather than a moral failing or personal quirk. It’s a reflection of how desire itself always plays in the field of the Other, in the symbolic matrix that holds us in place. The married person becomes an actor in that symbolic scene, and their status as “claimed” adds a charge, a mystery, or a prohibition that fuels the fantasy.
