Are empaths real. Like are empathy disorders a real psychological thing or is Will Graham just a little special

Cognitive and emotional empathy. Fairly self-explanatory, and I’m fairly certain there are certain there are psychological disorders that may decrease a person’s capacity for emotional empathy. I just did a bit of research and apparently there is something called “hyper-empathy”. Will is still special, though, because I’m not sure how valid applying the term “empathy disorder” to what I mentioned above would be…

Psych here, there isn’t a recognized diagnosis called empathy disorder, nor most terms thrown around in the show haha! But it’s fiction so it’s okay. In practice, empathy is discussed as a trait or a dimension that can be higher or lower in different conditions, rather than as a standalone disorder.

doesn’t Will display signs of vicarious traumatization or something?

He does, yes. Vicarious traumatization is a concept from trauma psychology. It’s when someone is exposed to another person’s trauma so deeply that they begin to experience secondary trauma symptoms themselves. It’s like an over-identification with someone else’s trauma to the point of absorbing it, leading to symptoms like flashbacks, nightmares, or burnout.
