we have hannibal’s person suit character- which he is essentially a complete narcissist towards

and then we have his sort of animal part that is behind that- am i crazy in thinking he hates it? i dont know if it reminds him of lithuania, or if it makes him feel completely alone, if he does deep down find his need for violence for the sake of violence vulgar, but he doesn’t seem to revel in it in the way i would expect such a pleasure-seeking character to. he also neglects to show it to will, until wrath of the lamb, which is interesting because it is the base thing that they instinctively see and gravitate towards in each other- and in seeing that will finally comes to his decision that it is ‘beautiful’.

when hannibal says ‘this is all ive ever wanted for you, for us’ could he be saying that in you accepting me i feel validated to accept myself? but in writing this it feels like crazy mischaracterization so i need to know the people’s thoughts

also hannibal places great importance in truth- specifically rare truth generally as pertains to the human experience but also the sort of concrete truth of pleasure in other instances, as opposed to morality- so it feels fitting that he covets his own to me, and i think we have a theme in his narcissism that ‘different’ rules apply to him. he revels in the pain of others but can’t stand his own, he finds sincerity and truth beautiful in others but lives his own life in a duplicitous facade etc etc

I don’t think it’s mischaracterization at all. Hannibal is, if nothing else, a master of masks. He fools not only the characters but also the audience. Makes us think he’s totally okay and well adjusted with who he is. He’s not at all. He is pathological about “converting” people into murders, Will collects strays and Hannibal collects murderers, he loves trying to corrupt people. That’s the behavior of someone who is essentially saying “if we all do it then I’m not the only one! If we all want it then it’s not so wrong…right?? Right, guys??”

He’s desperate about finding a “dark spot” in people and convincing them that they desire violence.

So yes, I think you’re right, he’s not well adjusted, he rejects his own self BUT he ultimately rejects the rejection so it seems as if he is self accepting but really he’s compulsively hiding it.
