Moralising Hannibal (the show) makes it so banal especially because that’s not even the point of the story. Will doesn’t need to be good or evil; he’s all of us. He’s a guy overflowing with humanity whose final boss is fucking Satan. All this talk about “dark” Will and whether or not he kills with Hannibal post-fall; isn’t it more interesting to think about him in terms of a guy who’s the sum of all his life experiences and is deliberately stripped off of his power and agency and identity, and watching all the ways in which he regains it back? And what regaining that power does to him or means to him? It’s a story about that. Will doesn’t have to be black or white, he’s a guy who’s doing what he can in the moment. He’s me or you. No single moment can define our nature, but the choices we make under pressure are what make us interesting. What choices would you make when faced with Hannibal? Will you be unconvinced of his philosophy or will you accept him like Will does?
