I imagine Will Graham being a little gremlin child filled with Too Many Emotions and hating everybody, including himself for it– but especially hating his dad for his inability to understand him. At least mom’s dead/gone, so there’s nothing there [casually burying abandonment issues], but dad YOU’RE here, and why is it that your own child is a stranger to you? I think Will knew as far as he can remember being special. Not weird, but unique. No one like him, and instinctually, he understands he’s above the rest. But it’s not appreciated, and while his dad tries, Will is Too Much. He is incomprehendible. This little boy who’s a little too understanding, but unknowingly unkind towards those who are not as smart as him. So much hatred, and he grows up empathising with his dad, but lacking sympathy in general. I like to think his relationship with his dad shaped all his adult relationships. He looks at people expecting them to not Understand—afraid of others, afraid of how he scares other people, and so afraid of himself. I think that when Hannibal, someone who’s also not like anyone else, and above the rest, grows obsessed with Will, grows compassionate towards Will, where he has no mercy for the rest, the child in Will is finally sated.
