“lesbian necromancers in space”: 5/10. technically true, except that gideon isn’t a necromancer and for the most part they aren’t in space. can also be tonally misleading; implies a fun space opera adventure and fails to mention the impending emotional devastation. that being said it is iconic and (mostly) effective
“murder mystery in a haunted gothic castle”: 8/10. MUCH better at capturing the tone and plot of the first book, but still a little off. imagine picking up the book because of this blurb and then watching gideon nav make a mean girls reference in the first 20 pages. the whiplash could kill you
“a locked tomb mystery”: 5/10. nondescriptive and a little misleading, but i can’t give this any lower than a 5 because the pun is very good. gideon would love this one and that should count for something
“gay goth among us”: 10/10. i’m not even going to pretend like this one doesn’t nail it. try and argue against this. you can’t. captures the murders, the space-y setting, the queer characters, the tone and aesthetic, AND the contemporary humor. chef’s kiss
“enemies to lovers ‘i hate everyone but you’ slow burn”: 1/10. true if you squint. the relationship between gideon and harrow would make booktok weep
“catholic homestuck”: 9/10. this means nothing and explains everything

10/10. conveys the pop culture savvy of the series, the complex dynamic between the main characters, and the humor of the writing style all at once. also makes me laugh every time i think about it
I just reread NtN and I am, of course, fixated on Kiriona’s misery. Specifically in the scene where Nona gets her birthday present from Pyrrha. She’s so alone, and it’s just so… sad. Gideon, the incredibly embodied girl, died, believed that the one she died for rejected her soul due to a lack of love, was reconstructed by her father into an unchanging, very dead body that presumably misses out on the pleasures of like, eating and working out and getting sore and sleeping and bathing in hot water, all things that we have seen Gideon greatly enjoy, is finally kissed by Not Harrow, who is actively dying, and now she’s just standing there while Pyrrha, her pseudo mother/almost pseudo father/mother’s lover/mother’s murderer kind of/almost Harrow’s murderer kind of, and Paul, one/two of the only people she could ever call a friend, are playing out a beautiful found family love tableau, that they have apparently been living out for the six months that she has been miserable and dead and making bracelets and secret handshakes with Ianthe. They’re comforting the girl who looks at her, kisses her, and doesn’t know her, and she’s just standing there, and no is is paying her the slightest bit of attention. None of them know where Harrow is, and none of these apparently very loving and comforting people are reaching out to comfort Gideon. Saddest girl in the universe:(
For con season this year I did a series of prints in a style I call “Duos” with two characters surrounded by a bunch of objects from whatever they’re from.
Here’s the Locked Tomb ones…it took a long time to come up with the objects please appreciate them…
I don’t think I’ve seen this said before, but it makes the most sense of anything.
John left Gideon mostly dead and with visible indications of this (the speed holes) on purpose specifically to stop Harrow (and others) from killing him. This is kind of his thing. He’s miserable. He wants people to like and to understand him, but he doesn’t know how to make people listen to or like him anymore without holding hostages. He’s holding all of the nine houses hostage too. But he’s realized they can leave if they really do want to because the entire sixth house did just that. And he can’t force every member of the nine houses to be directly dependent on him by using his power to somewhat consciously keep them alive (at least not any more than he already does). But he can do that to Gideon. And Gideon is important to Harrow, and Harrow is important to the entire ninth house and to the warden of the sixth and to Pyrrha (because of Nona) and Ianthe. And if Gideon actually dies, he doesn’t know what Harrow or anyone connected to her will do and neither does Harrow. The girl already did her own brain surgery because she thought it would stop Gideon from dying. So Gideon is now an insurance policy. Something tells me this will be important very quickly in Alecto.
