i think the fact that harrow and gideon’s fighting is often motivated by loneliness and desire for attention, is best evidenced by the fact that the most cutting thing harrow can think to say in two separate fights is, i hardly even remember about you most of the time.
like, first of all, objectively untrue. but also, a weirdly mask-off thing to say? when harrow shoots to kill, she doesn’t say i hate you, she says i don’t care. and i think this cuts both ways. harrow is the only person who knows gideon well enough to really hate her, and vise versa. they each base so much of themselves on each other (cue the ‘at least i had your full attention’ quote). i hardly even remember about you is the most terrible thing harrow can say to her, and she knows it. because they’re both so so lonely. really informs gideon’s feelings about the lobotomy. all gideon’s ever wanted harrow to do is remember about her.

“harsh noise baby” gideon nav coming from a convoluted mix of john and wake (grindcore father and breakcore mother) augustine and mercymorn (classical jazz father and baroque opera mother) g1deon and pyrrha (ambient campfire noise father and spaghetti western ost father) and aiglamene (aiglamene)
underrated palamedes moment when gideon first meets the sixth and camilla tosses pal the keyring from a few feet away and he completely fails to catch it. they hit his big graceful nerd hands and clatter to the ground. now that’s power. that’s sex appeal

nona and harrow

nona the ninth is a very funny book but I think arguably the funniest moment is when Ianthe’s like KIRIONA!!! SHUT THE FUCK UP ALECTOS IN L O V E WITH JOHN AND WE’RE NOT SUPPOSED TO FUCKING SAY IT OKAY!?!? not knowing that Alecto’s right there in Harrow’s body not remembering that piece of information and then because she does she immediately starts disintegrating and literally falling to pieces. like way to drop the ball mister girl 😭

going insane about mercy and augustine hours are 24/7 btw. they’re soulmates they fucking hate each other they’re married they’re messily divorced they get drunk and make out at parties he blames her dead best friend for his brother’s death they havent spoken in twenty years and date night is wednesday. they’re shockingly effective co-conspirators who cannot be left in rooms alone together. they’re ten thousand years old and they argue like children. no one can hurt either of them like the other can and they planned to literally throw themselves into the sun together. she gets incandescently angry at the mere mention of his name and he thinks his bones would be peaceful next to her bones. they’ve been trying to claw each other’s eyes out for literally longer than their universe’s recorded history, but then he died barely twenty minutes after she did, and the only surprise was that it took him so long. they are arguably the closest thing this series has to a heterosexual couple.
just. jesus christ. literally no one is doing it like them. because why would they, ever.

I’ve been trying to think of harrows epitaph, I think the saint of rejection works nicely for her and Gideon’s final act
