the thing about this one is . you can only tell when someone comes back from the dead all wrong . if you knew them well enough in the first place .

@hauntedharlequinn i am Obsessed with your tags

#HM. GOING TO BE OBSESSED WITH THIS NOW. THANKS #imagine a ritual that recreates someone from your memories of them. to you they are perfect but #to someone who knew a different side of them its a stranger#inspiration #or no. the horror of the resurrected. you have been wiped clean out of your own existence #and the only parts of you that get to survive are the ones others found useful #all your private quirks and ticks are gone. they are you but you can’t access them anymore #you are someone that left and was dragged back #and they don’t know you well enough to be horrified #you resurrect your loved one and they stop surprising you. because they can’t. they are only what #you asked for

hm. which one

can you elaborate on your tag meta on the socioeconomic indicators in the john backstory chapters in nona? and do you think john and G had a similar background having grown up together?

So John is a stingy ass motherfucker when it comes to definitive information, and he doesn’t talk about his family or his childhood much, but what little he says when he does gives me the impression he grew up fairly poor. Probably in a community where being poor was normal.

The way John talks about his nana, it’s clear he loved her in the way a child loves an adult they feel secure with. He spent a lot of time at her house as a kid, enough that playing there is one of his core memories. She may have even been his primary caretaker starting from the age of seven, because he sure never mentions having any other family. So it stands out to me that all he had to play with at her house was a box of his mother’s old hand-me-downs. And while he knows it wasn’t much, there’s no resentment in his recollection. He didn’t feel neglected.

John didn’t expect to have toys of his own when he was a kid. What that says to me, as a kid who grew up on second-hand and hand-me-downs, is his family didn’t buy much of anything new. It being so normal to him is also why I think he grew up in a poorer neighbourhood. Hand-me-downs are only embarrassing if you’re the only one who has them.

Then there’s how Nana died. Pneumonia, when John was still a teenager. Not a lot of rich people out there who die of lung infections before their grandchildren are grown.

And yeah, I do think G— had a similar background! He and John grew up on the same street, and he was (also?) raised by his grandparents. John’s totally joking when he says spotting G— for mince pies when they were kids meant that of course G— would let him cut off his arm, but it’s the kind of joke with subtext. Like sharing food was a big deal when they were kids. Reminds me of our Gideon being forever fond of Camilla for sharing her leftovers, and the intense barter between the children of New Rho over the lunch fruits. The childhood food insecurity of it all.

he also went to Dilworth, a boarding school that is primarily/exclusively attended by very poor (& majority maori) boys on scholarship

Every time the concept of necromantic theorems comes up in the locked tomb books I just picture this meme. Just seeing the theorem and immediately being able to perform the magic.

a post: mentions memory loss

me: how can I make this about harrowhark nonagesimus 🤔

i’m 10,000 years old i’m wildly obsessive and i’m going to kill god

ah yes. me, on Christmas break, spending 14 hours a day in bed, deep in the throes of some new (it’s been six months) hyperfixation. Tale as old as time

the thing about gideon/kiriona that drives me crazy is that none of her names have ever actually been hers. gideon was given to her just because it’s the only thing her mother’s ghost said, but it was literally already somebody else’s name. and then kiriona is from john who has made her into a kind of doll-like construct and seems to be using her in some way. just makes me wonder what name she’s gonna end up with

when I finally get to read Alecto it’s gonna be debilitating. I’m concerned for my grades in advance tbh

There is so much Noah’s Flood stuff going on in The Locked Tomb. A lot is in Gideon the Ninth, and I feel incredibly dense for missing it until now:

  • The whole world is flooded
  • Basically everyone died
  • The representatives are sent two by two, like Noah’s animals
  • Colum Asht’s first name means Dove according to the appendix, and Noah used a dove to see if the flood had receded yet
  • (Noah also sent out a raven, is there something there?)
  • Teacher’s sash is rainbow colored, echoing God “putting his bow in the clouds” as a sign he wouldn’t flood the world again

I noticed rainbows cropping up a lot before and I’m really glad to have a more concrete basis for interpreting that.

The reason I finally put it together is that Tamsyn smashed it in our faces in Nona:

“But that’s the grace of it, Harrow. If I’m God, I can start over. The flood, you know? You can wash things clean. That’s all the end of Earth was … making things clean. It gets dirty again, you clean it again. Like those old power-washing ads. Spray and walk away, right? (“John 5:4”)

So let’s pause here and notice that he’s styled a lot of Imperial things with rainbows, which are a reference only he understands. He went to church camp, even if it was only for the underage drinking, he would know this. Rainbows are supposed to be a promise not to flood the world again, but it’s a promise nobody else can hear and he doesn’t seem to feel bound by it.

The other thing about the rainbows is that Tamsyn also describes a lot of things as both rainbowed and oily, for instance the steel of the space ships and Jod’s eyes (“The irises were dark and leadenly iridescent—a deep rainbow oil slick, ringed with white”). I went into this a bit more in the post linked above but we’re getting farther from Noah. I don’t feel like I fully understand this, other than a connection between rainbows and pollution.

The other big Noah connection comes at the end of Nona the Ninth when Alecto finds Jod:

Afterward Alecto went down to the ship and stood before John, purposing to travel through the River, and was grieved to find it yet dead. John was asleep, and not in his garments, unshaved and still drunken.

Noah was also drunk, asleep, and naked at one point after the flood. He got drunk on his own wine. He was in his tent, his son Ham saw him in the raw and said so to Noah’s other sons Shem and Japheth. Shem and Japheth devised an elaborate way to cover up his tra-la-la without having to see it. When they did so, Noah awoke, intuited that Ham must have seen his ding ding dong, and therefore immediately cursed Ham and his descendants (the Canaanites) forever.

I honestly don’t see the connection other than the image. Maybe there are other drunk naked asleep guys in scripture. But we’ve had so much Flood stuff.

Here’s the Genesis chapter after the flood.

BUT

  • He’s at war with the people who did make the ships and escape the flood
  • He left the flood in place for 10,000 years instead of one year and a few days
  • His wrath was not extinguished by killing everyone (because he missed the ones he wanted to kill, in the ships)
  • He didn’t cause the flood directly? He preempted it by killing everyone?

Apparently the mythological Pyrrha, along with her husband, survived the flood in Greek Myth and used rocks (“your mother’s bones”) to recreate humanity. So there is… also that.

Mother Gaia… bones… and Pyrrha is supposed to have had red hair…

This is extra interesting in the context of the theory that Pyrrha retained her pre-Resurrection memories. Most of the evidence for that theory is pretty equivocal IMO — the Bureau could as easily have been a House intelligence org — but the vibes are right.

I think when she talks about the Bureau she’s actually talking about the Cohort! (The Emperor’s Intelligence she brings up with Aiglamene). Pre Resurrection P— had a good career but she definitely wasn’t leading intelligence agencies.

The theory that she might have retained her memory is based on her calling Nona Hairy McLean (character from a NZ children’s books series) her joke about the Cohort uniforms looking “disco”, and calling Gideon “G—”

But yes I believe her name is 100% intentional. Greek mythology Pyrrha of Thessaly recreated humanity from rocks. TLT Pyrrha loves Alecto. There’s so much going on here!

Once the deluge was over and the couple were on land again, Deucalion consulted the oracle of Themis about how to repopulate the earth. He was told to throw the bones of his mother behind his shoulder. Deucalion and Pyrrha understood the "mother" to be Gaia, the mother of all living things, and the "bones" to be rocks. They threw the rocks behind their shoulders, which soon began to lose their hardness and change form. ALT

what if Harrow thinks that g1deon the first is Gideon’s father. i mean is that not the most logical conclusion based on what she currently knows (or what we currently know she knows). idk maybe she’s actually omniscient and knows all but I think this would be funnier

Jod’s lyctors as avenging angels…. the imagery alone

harrow’s body!gideon fascinates me. the eyes in that face. the way she has to relearn how to move. would she really have showered in all harrow’s clothes given the chance (I think yes). would harrow’s food problems extend to gideon then? is that a physical thing or does that belong to harrow’s soul/brain. would love to know

all the media I like takes place in a vast, distant universe, like genuinely in space, and yet all the characters happen to be related despite never having met each other before

John: oh hey, this is like uhhh… luke I am your father, am I right?

Kiriona: what are you even saying anymore.

hey um ive got some bad news, your boyfriend (??) exploded. yeah he didn’t make it. yeah he’s in his own interdimensional afterlife bubble now. he’s stuck in there. he told me to tell you he loves you? yeah okay that was a lie. you know what to do.

much like gideon the first i am legendarily unamorous

I’m sure this has been done but I can’t remember

tlt is insane it’s like what if there were a love story between a girl who is a lock and a girl who is a key. okay now what if it was a love triangle with the thing in the fucking box

everyone in the notes is saying like “ianthe is the lockpick” “ianthe is the hammer” and is IS funny BUT I stand beside the fact that it is sooo much funnier that she has no part whatsoever in that whole dynamic. she couldn’t give less of a shit about the tomb. if gideon is a key and harrow is a lock then ianthe is a lesbian who is sexually interested in locks

what does jod think happened to g1deon. Does he know about pyrrha

ianthe and I don’t have much in common except. the only person in the world she really cares about is her sibling. everyone else is just an extra in the story about them.

hey sorry your girlfriend erased you from her brain. yeah she didn’t want to absorb your soul so now she doesn’t remember you at all. however her mouth does still remember how to say your name even though she has no idea you exist. yeah she called for you when she was dying but on a conscious level she doesn’t know about that. sorry

sometimes you think you’re a character but then it turns out you’re actually just a plot device in a five hundred year long scheme. then when you die and come back very late in what you thought was your own story people have the nerve to say that you’re “off-putting” and “came back wrong”

“average ninth house child has over five thousand bones” factoid actually just combination statistical error and misunderstanding of ninth house law. the average ninth house child has 250 bones. the approximately ten thousand exoskeletal bones on the person of the reverend daughter harrowhark nonagesimus at any given moment belong legally to the house in common, not to her specifically, and should not have been counted in this data set. why was this error enough to drag the reported average for all ninth house children so far above its actual value? well,
