one of the reasons i love the memes and homestuck references etc in tlt is not just because of the way they present this subtle challenge to the literary world regarding what type of media “deserves” to be referenced in “serious pieces of writing,” but also because including them is just so much more honest. because yeah, as a writer, you’re inspired by the great works of fiction and culture and religion that came before you, but you’re also just as influenced by the “low brow” stuff in your life. as much as they’d like to pretend otherwise, there’s not an author alive today who doesn’t also get ideas from advertisements, from trashy soaps, from comedians, from pop music, from comic strips, from dick jokes in public bathrooms, from mass market paperbacks, from the packaging on their shampoo, from any and everywhere that people are expressing any type of thought.
