I’m 2 hours into the audiobook and we still haven’t left Drearburh and I still haven’t gotten used to this Harrow voice plucked straight out of a “your English mistress scolds you for forgetting to polish the golden piss pot” asmr video. I really like Aiglamene (and finally finding out how to pronounce Aiglamene), and Gideon’s voice is pretty fitting, aggressive and enthusiastic, but Harrow is just so prissy and theatrical and high pitched! My Harrow voice is always gonna be raspy and monotonous, low and dour and portentous. If she can’t be bothered to feel her own emotions, there’s no way she’s gonna go to the effort of projecting any into her voice. And above all else I think Harrow is just constantly mortified by every aspect of living, moving, existing in her body, and I think her voice would reflect that, I think it’d be subdued and reluctant, like she’s mad at you for coaxing it out of her

OP, you’re so right.

How prissy and disdainful the Harrow voice is in the audiobook deeply shaped how I think of the character because I read it on audio first.

Harrow’s voice says “how dare you talk to me and make me speak to you, you shit” and that has deeply influenced how I see the character.

Her voice is part of her mask. She’s not putting any of her own emotions into her daily speech but she’s damn sure gonna make sure everyone knows they’re talking to the Reverend Daughter and she does it by ladling on the haughty disdain.

It’s interesting how much the medium can influence an interpretation. I wouldn’t have used the words monotonous or dour for Harrow and I wonder if I would have interpreted it differently without the audiobook.

That really is so cool! Having read both books before trying the audio I’d developed my own voice biases without even noticing, and only now that I’m confronted with a competing interpretation I can kinda put my finger on em. I definitely agree that pretense and misdirection is like Harrow’s main defense mechanism, but the way I always imagined her, she didn’t care to put on a show for you. She’s not gonna even go to the effort of acting superior when she just is superior. She can be plenty disdainful with actions and words without needing to modulate her sad half used little excuse for a voice. This Harrow is very much a well defined character, but she’s totally different from my Harrow, through voice work alone, and that’s pretty damn cool

4 hours into the audiobook and omg Cytherea is such a breathy little fucker 😂😂 I love her

I also really enjoy the way the narration sounds a little more Gideon-esque when her commentary bleeds into it

The meeting with Magnus and the awful teens was magnificent, loved hearing them hissing balefully in the background while Magnus got just the wrongest possible impression of Gideon, meanwhile Gideon discreetly files away his awkward wave in her distressingly tiny “people being nice to me” drawer

Ianthe sounds like a nasty sarcastic old woman, which is perfect 😂 but I was hoping for a little more verve and like excitement from Corona. Also wrow their dynamic is so fucking unsettling, I gotta feel a lil bad for Babs

Omgggg Cytherea was suuuuch a flirt, I almost forgot just how shameless, and then she looks at Gideon’s eyes….. she knew from the start what was up huh

Omg Palamedes and Cam’s voices are soooo bad??? What is this aggressive Palamedes, where’s my gentle nerd??? And Camilla speaking like a bubbly teen the very line after her tone is described as low and no nonsense?!!! These are weirder than Harrow’s voice omg

Edit: Hooooly shit the fight scene’s so much more exciting to listen to than read tho, this was awesome

can’t overlook this gem of a detailed fantasy involving being hot and impressing Harrow from halfway across the universe getting Gideon through a hundred reps

#gideon: i totally hate harrow! i think about showing her up by making her think i’m hot and impressive all the time  #gideon: memorizes how it feels to have harrow in her arms “to add accuracy to her fantasies about throwing her off a cliff”  #gideon: thinks about harrow CONSTANTLY  #also gideon: the only feeling i have for harrow is hatred. that’s why i spend so much time daydreaming about her. it’s a rivalry thing  #I’M JUST SAYING  #IT IS IN FACT GAY TO MEMORIZE HOW A GIRL FEELS IN YOUR ARMS SO YOU CAN THINK ABOUT IT LATER

Alright I had no intention of reading Gideon the Ninth for a few reasons, but I checked out that fic you recced and it’s amazing and now idk what to do

Well yknow I’m utterly obsessed with the books and with Gideon as a character specifically, they’re both weird and funny and sad and gay in exactly the right ways for me, but also the books have loads of triggering or just unpleasant material and especially the second book can be extremely boring and upsetting for long stretches, so they’re certainly not for everyone. That fic is perfect and I would recommend it for everyone tho lol! (Behind the Locked Door by UnseelieWench go read it rn) But also if you wanna tell me more about your preferences I might be able to more accurately predict if this is a book for you

i just fucking realized that palamedes and camilla are from the sixth house, making their friendship with gideon and harrow a fucking 69 joke

Gideon and asses

I have no idea what the hell gideon the ninth is and im betting it's some kind of fantasy genre thing which i have never been into but that ass post really got me thinking if i should read it.

Hoho if you liked that may I present to you: Gideon Nav, swordswoman extraordinaire, certified goof, horny touch starved baby butch, believes puns are funny by default, will bark all day long but wouldn’t bite unless someone else was in danger, looks so cool and intimidating until she opens her mouth, just look at her go:

And this is all just from the first chapter.

Also, yeah, it’s a fantasy/sci fi thing, usually billed as “lesbian necromancers in space” featuring slow burn enemies to lovers (tho it’s a sloooow burn) and lots of bodyguard tropes. Basically the premise is Harrow, teen bone witch/nerd and head of a dying planet, drags Gideon, her childhood nemesis/professional pain in the ass, as her bodyguard to a weird necromancy tournament in space, wherein they encounter a bunch of other nerds, jocks, skeletons, bonding moments, and murder. But really the draw here is Gideon’s embarrassing selfless gay ass and the often hilarious writing that still packs a hell of an emotional punch.

There are some salient trigger warnings so lmk if you want a list, but I love this book so much and I love Gideon, chaotic crass tenderhearted cavalier of my heart, give it a shot you might regret it but isn’t that half the fun

tripped and accidentally imprinted on the worst girl in the cast

I don't ever want them to do a live action Gideon movie because who'd they ever get to play Gideon? Who has the build?

Naw bud the build isn’t the problem….. there’s plenty of beefy female athletes. What I don’t trust is their ability to bring the sheer unhinged, aggressive, insufferable, unpalatable, weirdo gay energy to life. You rarely see female characters like this in a book, let alone on a screen… They don’t even let female action heroes have body hair, you think they’re gonna let em have blood sweat coming out the nose?? Gonna let em be ugly and creepy and off-putting?? Just putting a loud foul mouthed cocky sweet goofy butch in the lead role is such an incredible stretch, but even if they nail that there’s no way in hell they wouldn’t mess up Harrow

“Surprise, my tenebrous overlord!” said Gideon. “Ghosts and you might die is my middle name.”

i read/listened to Gideon the Ninth for the lesbian space necromancers and was not at all disappointed. This book is an absolutely wild ride!

A lil fic in which Gideon showers with her clothes on, changes in the dark, applies her face paint out of a manual, and doesn’t touch herself ever. Well. Hardly ever.

HtN spoilers ahead!

A bit anticlimactic, if you ask me, after slaying brain melting horror bees and swimming right out of hell, for my next great big challenge to be trying to figure out how to take a dump in a prudish little nun’s body without compromising its modesty.

Not to put too fine a point on it or anything, my sombre bathroom break micromanager, but you really didn’t stick the landing on this one. You had a letter for basically every contingency, like you had one for if God sneezed really hard and blew out the sun, I’m pretty sure, and then mine was basically just ‘fuck you, return to sender’. You just went and parked your porsche in my landing pad with the blasters still on and didn’t even bother to leave the DRY CLEANING ONLY tag on the upholstery. I had to come up with a virtue-preserving game plan all on my lonesome, you know.

And I’ve been such a good girl, Harrow, you’d be proud. Well, at least you’d be such an unexpectedly small, tiny, miniscule, astonishingly negligible amount of pissed off that it’s basically pride at that point, right.

Don’t get me wrong, it was a logistical nightmare. Ever tried to shower in multiple robes plus what I must assume are, like, pantaloons? The sonic flaps it all the fuck around, and let me tell you, getting spanked by heavy Ninth vestments is now officially off my kink list. Now, the other option is wet dog trapped in straightjacket, and I’m not too keen on that one either. But I stuck with it. It takes like 20 minutes, no joke, to struggle out of all your stupid layers in the dark, with my eyes closed, without touching any of your most hallowed skin. But I’ve got a knack for it now, you know? If I ever get the chance to get a lil frisky, maybe with a hot ghost or something I don’t know, I can totally impress her with my wild 100% contact free striptease skills.

What I’m saying is, I’ve been such a super duper chaste and meticulous and ephemeral little make believe nun it’s like I was never even here. So you gotta take that into consideration, Harrow, when you pass your terrible judgment once I tell you how I’ve sinned.

So, it happened when I was putting your face paint on. It wasn’t half bad, either. Really, it was half good. I’ve been practicing. I found this horrible little book full of the gnarliest, creepiest, just most hideous skull faces, and they all had these pretentious titles like The Palm of the Storm or The Young Boy’s Booger. Just your style, basically.

But I was looking at your face in the mirror—that’s the way paint application goes, Harrow, don’t pout—and I got stuck on your pinched, bloodless lips for some reason, and I forgot for a moment that it was me in your muscles, and I just thought, wow, you looked so sad. You always looked so goddamn sad, and no one ever did a fucking thing about it, least of all you, and in that moment I was so angry about it, I could smack you.

So naturally I reached out and I brushed your knuckle gently over your cheek. And lo, I wasn’t struck down on the spot. That gave me a bit of a confidence boost, I suppose. I ran your thumb under your eye, just a little avuncular half circle while thinking just the purest fucking thoughts, and it came away wet.

Really got you going, that one little barely there swipe. You needed this real bad, Nonagesimus. I needed this, too. We were gagging for it. We were crying for it. I needed you to be touched gently, so bad, and I needed even badder to be the one doing the touching. I knew you wouldn’t want that, of course, don’t feel the need to defend your honor. This was my best compromise, okay? I didn’t have a lot to work with. This way you wouldn’t really be touched and I wouldn’t really be touching, but maybe we’d both get a little something out of it anyway.

This is maybe a good time to confess those thoughts weren’t so totally super pure. They were maybe a little muddier, a little earthier, you know. Harrow, listen, I’ve been thinking a lot about your body, what with living in it for months and having only the one made up magazine to look at and being balls to the wall in love and all. Sorry. So when I tell you I’ve been thinking about running my fingertip over your eyebrow from glabella to sphenoid, what I’m saying is I’ve fantasized about the texture of each one of your big black goddamn eyebrow hairs so much my finger’s never not tingly anymore. And when I wiped your eye with a tiny knuckle and ran that smooth little fingertip along your real ass eyebrow, Harrow, there was a definite fucking tingle, and I didn’t fucking stop.

I traced the smooth plane of your frontal bone, the proud arch of your brow ridge. I dragged your fingertips over your temple and into the mass of your sweaty, overlong hair. The side of your finger grazed the shell of your ear, and you shivered—your ears are so sensitive, Nonageaimus, I thought this stuff only happened in porn—and I felt the full, terrifying shape of your skull in my hand. I cupped the back of your sore-ass neck in a palm and I squeezed just a little, just to let us know we were held, and I worked our fingertips into those nonexistent traps that still somehow managed to be clenched tighter than a stoma that’s munched down on one too many emperors. I kneaded them good until they loosened just a bit, and we were still crying like a little bitch.

I squeezed your shoulder, the clavicle pressing sharply into our palm, and I stroked down your bicep, which did not deserve the name, by the way, and I brushed the inside of your elbow and I dragged the underside of your bitten fingernails up your forearm and over that terrifyingly delicate wrist and your doll sized soft palm and then I held your fucking hand.

Yeah, I laced our fucking fingers together, Harrow. Eat me.

I could feel your heart beating in our interdigital folds, I was holding your hand so hard and so intertwiney. And we were definitely feeling some kind of way just then. I had to sit down on your bony ass, your eyes leaking, your shoulders shaking, as I was having just the most mortifying little breakdown over holding my own hand.

I’m sorry, Harrow. I wanted to hug you a lot, these past few months. There were so many moments I wanted to reach outside of you, all like blerghgrgh sudden gorgeous beefy arm bursting out of your stomach to smack Shittier Gideon in the balls or give Shittier Tridentarius a purple nurple. I wanted to give you a pat on the head, tell you’ve been a good good doggie and you can take a lil break now. Wanted to rub your shoulders and arms all over, force a bit of warmth into em even if I’ve given up on muscle. Wanted to brace the heel of my palm at the small of your back, squeeze your hips and pull em back, run a hand along that spine to make it proud again, just to give you some support, just to see you stand up straight. Wanted to rub the frown right off your brow, poke your lil cheeks and make you snarl, give you something nice and tough to bite on. But mostly I just wanted to hold you.

I wanted to wrap you tight, so that you’d become a compact little package with well defined edges and maybe then you could open it all up and let it out. Only in my big stupid arms, I’d think selfishly, like some sort of grand duke of self delusion, would you finally feel safe enough to cry.

Nah. Who was I kidding? It was me who was crying. It was me who wanted to be comforted, to be touched kindly, to have her hand held, and it was only me who was getting anything out of doing this stupid weird creepy bullshit. I wasn’t giving you shit, Nonagesimus. I just wanted to hold your hand.

I didn’t let go, though. Again, Harrow, sorry. Your body didn’t care that it was only you, only me. Your skin and your flesh and all those bits you didn’t care about wanted this too, probably. The pressure, and the warmth, the illusion or the weird roundabout reality of another person who cares about you. Maybe I’m making excuses again. But I care about you, Harrow. You’ll believe that much, won’t you? I care about your body. I care about all the non-skeleton parts of you, even. Baffling, I know.

So I sat on your ass, and I bent your head over our joined hands, and I cried, and I didn’t let go.

bolinshipskorrasami:

Rereading Harrow (already? it’s more likely than you think) and I am having Thoughts.

Thinking about what the Locked Tomb series is telling us about love and relationships, but particularly regarding Gideon and Harrow.

Specifically, I am thinking about Ianthe and Gideon’s discussion about Harrow’s choice to take away her memories of Gideon. After Gideon tells Ianthe she “never got anywhere [with Harrow]” and Ianthe challenges her (“Did you?”)

I’m talking about forgetting… Good God! Try taking Coronabeth’s memories from me… I’d kill you myself. Love… true love is acquisitive. You keep anything… Love is a revenant, Gideon Nav, and it accumulates love-stuff to itself, because it is homeless otherwise.

Ianthe obviously trying to claim that Gideon must not have meant much to Harrow if she was willing to just discard her and rewrite her own memories, wipe her from her life.

Ianthe’s idea of love here is very interesting, most especially because I sort of see her and Harrow as foils, particularly in HtN. And growing up, I do feel that Harrow also saw this type of expression as love.

I think about their fight when they were kids, as Gideon tells it

you told me if anyone came looking for me you would get your parents to lock me in a closet and say that I had died of “brain malfunction”

and also that Gideon tried to escape the 9th House 80 something times but Harrow always prevented it. And yet that Harrow confesses in the pool that Gideon is her only friend and she would be “undone” without her.

So, yeah in a way I think Harrow has formed similar ideas of love being this possessive thing, this preventing someone from leaving you. That there is little room for agency and choice in it.

But. I think that is lowkey why her erasing Gideon is exact proof that she unselfishly loves Gideon and that her definition of what it means to care about someone has grown. Her love for Gideon is no longer about possessing her or keeping her under her control - it’s about saving her, even if that results in Harrow losing her for good. Because if Gideon lives, Harrow dies. Or if Gideon’s soul is to be saved, she must give up everything she knows about Gideon, a big part of herself in the process.

A lot of people talk about Harrow as taking the easy way out with her grief by erasing Gideon, but the reality is she is sacrificing a lot in order to express a much more selfless kind of love.

I know the series isn’t over yet but I can’t help but think about these interwoven themes of love being about consensual and mutually beneficial service and to some extent sacrifice - but that it’s not about sacrificing the self or consuming another. It’s about a balance and a wholeness. “The love of service on both sides” as the paperback of GtN puts it.
