what did muir PUT in gideon nav to make her the most loveable character I have ever read. I don’t even enjoy reading girls who don’t scheme. In any other series harrow would be my favorite character by far. Why is Gideon the best girl in the universe. Scientists have been studying this question

I think its because Gideon feels more like a real person than fictional characters usually do. Most characters and their behavior are plausible, but Gideon is like. I have known Gideon personally. There are many people I know or have known who would behave more or less identically to Gideon in the given situations.

The others, to me, feel like plausible people. Most of them are in some way defined by their relationship to the world of The Locked Tomb series. I have no idea what Harrowhark would be like if she was in the real world because so much of who she is is wrapped up in being a necromancer. But I know exactly what Gideon would be like in the real world, more or less.

Most of the time a character is “oh yeah thats just a person I know in real life”, they’re a minor character or background character. But Gideon is the *main* character. Miss Protagonist. That she is so recognizably “oh thats fully a regular human” is wild.

Gideon belongs in a movie about college or some bullshit, not all of this shit. Somewhere there’s a book that has a super out of place fucked up goth chick who won’t shut up about skeletons and the author is wondering where their character went

she does feel very realistically portrayed! I definitely agree there is some inherent gideonness that makes it so you could transport her to a variety of locations and she would still basically be Gideon (although! Perhaps this is just bc she’s a very good fantasy world parallel to situations that happen irl. Her upbringing doesn’t rely as heavily on fantasy elements as anyone else’s, and it might be more recognizable whereas you do kind of have to filter harrow’s whole deal through a couple of layers of metaphor). I think harrow is the type of person who ruthlessly adapts to her circumstances at whatever personal cost so yeah, she looks completely different depending on where you put her. Maybe there’s a universe where she’s pastel or something. Gideon is always going to be a sunbeam though.
