ive been thinking about it using my limited memory of highschool biology and: alectos originally got the black eyes john has, implying that the combination of all the soulyness of the earth = harrowharks combination of 200 souls = black eyes which is VERY INTERESTING! but that aside, johns eyes were also normal before turning gold with necromancy. it could be that all the humans have a recessive, inactive gene of Maybe getting gold eyes if theyre blessed by the earth or whatever. which would explain how that gene just passes down over 10000 years worth of generations AND also that all the humans have the potential to have gold eyes- they just werent activated because only john has been blessed by a fucking planet. but since johns gene is already activated and wake has the other recessive gene gideons eyes get to be brightass baby gold
