Thinking about Harrow’s perspective on the conversation after the avulsion trial. I suspect when Harrow decided to go through with avulsion it was on the assumption that, if it came down to the wire, Gideon would slap her greedy little necromantic hands off and let Harrow die rather than kill her. The assumption that Gideon’s stong sense self-preservation—which she definitely does have, having survived growing up on the Ninth—would assert itself, and therefore the life most at risk in the trial was Harrow’s.
I think the aftermath of this trial is the first time Harrow realises that she can’t necessarily trust Gideon to look after herself first. But…
