My roommate reading Harrow the Ninth for the first time: I like when Harrow’s second person narration throws in some Gideon-isms. It’s fun to hear her voice still coming through.

Thoughts on Nona the Ninth

• First half was probably my least favorite out of the 3 books. Definitely not bad, but I don’t think Nona’s narration is as compelling/entertaining as what we got in GtN and HtN.
• Second half was probably my favorite out of the 3 books. Really visceral imagery and good twists/lines.
• Best use of a meme other than maybe the dad joke in HtN.
• You know, referring to the River bubbles as “dream bubbles” is another red flag suggesting that this might be based on Hom-*gunshot*.

my only possibly unpopular take on the locked tomb series is that sometimes, not always, but sometimes i do think the meme references are a little cringy

“hi not fucking dead, i’m dad” was still absolutely legendary though

• “studied the blade” was good and fit
• “my body is ready” was fine

• jod mumbling kumbaya under his breath because harrow accidentally quoted it was funny
• cool s was good
• “thank you, next” was cringe
  
• the miette reference was cringe
• “hi not fucking dead, i’m dad” was great
  
• “none planet with left grief” was a little cringe but was a great telling moment for who john is as a person
  
• the princess bride references are fine but also.. i dunno. not necessary and feel a bit cheapening to me for reasons i have trouble articulating
• jod making a ‘wake me up inside’ reference was pretty funny, and good characterization again
