I just started Harrow the ninth and the shift in tone… was both jarring and kind of hilarious.

I made this when I finished gtn for the first time and I liked it at the time and then I didn’t like it for awhile which is why I hadn’t posted it here but now I look at it with fondness because i just adore her so (resisting the urge to do a quick paintover…there is so much i would do differently now) and so in my moment of weakness i bestow to you gideon nav, loml

i can’t stand how much this fandom leans into treating nona like a kid. like the fact that she’s analagous to a disabled adult and the people around her treat her like a child because they don’t know how to engage with the idea of a disabled adult is one of the underlying themes of the novel. yeah it’s subtle but it’s introduced very early with nona understanding and being capable of engaging with the idea of having sex, surprising camilla who hadn’t internalized the fact that nona was an autonomous adult with the capability to both understand sex and consent if desired and relevant.

and the theme continues throughout the book–nona continues to have insight and context that is relevant to her as a disabled adult, and is infantilized by well meaning people around her for what she considers relevant and how she expresses it, resulting in a lot of tension and frustration on nona’s part even while she understands the people around her are acting out of compassion and love. imho the fandom taking that and deciding to portray her as a literal child is emblematic of ableist tendencies and an unwillingness to interrogate the concepts that the text itself is interrogating.

i predicted that rereading GtN with everything i now know would be a whole new reading experience and god i was so right

it’s SO OBVIOUS that protesilaus has been dead from the start. he moves like a puppeted corpse. he has zero personality. he only does what dulcinea tells him to do. i picked up on none of this the first time round bc i was too busy trying to figure out who belongs to which house

it’s even more obvious that coronabeth has no magic, from the way she looks compared to every single necromancer, to the way we NEVER ONCE SEE HER DOING NECROMANCY. again. i did not realise.

Tamsyn Muir is a master of insane plot twists that are simultaneously heavily foreshadowed and make perfect sense

I love seeing all the things left by the old lyctors, the notes and the names and all the mundane little echoes of their humanity, and being able to match them to characters i love. i know why this note says gideon. i know it was written by pyrrha dve, and i know she smokes cigarettes and makes ass jokes and comes up with stupid nicknames.

abigail and magnus are dead, and that was more of a gut punch on the second reading than the first, because i’ve had so much more time to get attached to the characters. yes i am scared for the rest of the book.
