your name is Gideon Nav and you are the only survivor of something horrible, and you don’t understand why. every time you walk to your mother’s grave you have to pass by the bones of 200 dead children knowing you could have been one of them, and you weren’t. everyone you know hates you, and the only reason behind your survival that you can guess at is maybe the dead kids hated you too; maybe they shunned you so thoroughly that it inadvertently saved your life. every year you survive is a year that you know your peers did not get to see, and when you know when you turn 18 you will finally eclipse them totally.
