If you use Windows 7/8/8.1 then in the next few days you will get a little notification in your taskbar about upgrading to Windows 10.
This is not a virus. This is not a scam. This is not anything to bitch about.
Microsoft will be releasing Windows 10 in the next few months and all this is, is you giving them the go ahead to push it out to you when it’s ready. When you click the “reserve upgrade” button it will tell the update server to automatically download it just as it does any run of the mill Windows updates. Unlike older versions that were a hassle because you had to get the disk and all that, this one installs absolutely effort-less. Once it’s downloaded you’ll just get a notification to reboot and let it do it’s thing. Don’t worry about compatibility because it’s 99.99% likely you’ll have no issues but it will scan for them just in case.
I have been running the insider preview of Windows 10 for months and it is absolutely amazing, even in unfinished form. Don’t be one of those assholes who insists on clinging to outdated software. Upgrade and you’ll like it. It has the best of 7 and 8 and so much more. The best part is it’s free as long as you upgrade within the first year, and no, you won’t have to pay to keep using it later. Anyone who says that is an ill-informed asshole.
In the future, there won’t be a new version released every few years that completely redoes the whole thing like it’s been in the past. Instead, Microsoft is treating Windows 10 as a service and will be continually upgrading it with new features pushed out when they’re ready, more like you get updates on a smartphone, and once you’ve done the initial upgrade you’ll get all future ones for the life of your computer.
Please do yourself a favor and download Windows 10 when it comes out. Don’t be that person who’s going to whine and complain about how you’ll never leave 7 and shit. Just upgrade and get with the times, and you can make that even easier for yourself by reserving the upgrade now in advance.

Last year I updated to 8.1 and shortly thereafter had to reinstall my entire system because 8.1 fucked it up so bad. I lost access to my Adobe software for like a month because the discs were in another freaking country.
Whyyyyyyyyyyyyy would I trust that 10 is not gonna trash my shit
particularly when like I have no idea when/if Krita, Libre Office, and all my other absolutely critical open source software are going to be made to work with 10
or my monoprice tablet for that matter

Installing and using desktop Linux is within the purview of mere mortals these days. Not that the situation with Unity / GNOME 3 / etc is something to be proud of, but at least you have other reasonable options if you e.g. install Ubuntu and decide Unity is a piece of trash.
I don’t know what most of that means but uh it’s definitely not completely off the table, particularly since like at this point I’m making this big list of all the programs I need and practically all of them are GNU programs. So.
Can Steam run on LINUX systems?
Also, is it possible, on the offchance that my hard drive is fine and it’s the rest of the computer that isn’t functioning correctly, is it possible I could actually run LINUX on it as an external device? I mean I know I could use it as an external hard drive but can you use external hard drives to run operating systems?
Steam runs fine on Linux, but many games do not. All games (and probably non-game steam programs) have clear (to me) markings on them describing which OS:s they run on. EDIT: These markings are in their store pages, if that wasn’t clear.
Running Operating Systems on external drives is surprisingly easy, to the point that the standard tool for installing most forms of Linux is a memory stick which itself runs Linux (so you can get a good look at your new OS before installing it). You’d have to fiddle a bit with it if you want to keep the data on your drive, though.
