My personal little SU theory

In spite of what everyone including himself expects from him and assumes of him, Steven does not actually have romantic feelings for Connie and they’re eventually going to have to deal with that. That coming to some sort of head and complicating their relationship just feels like something that’d fit right in with SU’s overarching themes.

I dunno, it’s very much personal bias, but I just really want more stories about people wanting to be in love and expecting to be in love and then just, not being in love. Same with sexual attraction really. As an aroace who spent literally eight years trying to figure out how to find true love, that’s something that deeply resonates with me.

And Steven, well if you look closely Steven doesn’t seem to be quite as clearly into Connie romantically as Connie into Steven romantically. She’s the one who almost kisses him. She’s the one who leans into him when they dance, and while there are some fairly subtle blushes on his part here and there, Steven doesn’t really do stuff like that, near as I can tell. Though honestly Connie could be projecting too, given her infatuation with grand fantasy and its typical markers of such things.

I think the line that most seals me on it all, though, is “When Connie grows up and becomes president what is that gonna make me? First Boy?!” said by Steven when he’s worried he won’t grow up after realizing his body’s been kinda frozen in time for a couple years.

The assumption that they’ll be married is given equal weight with the assumption that Connie will literally become the President.

PS: Do note that none of this presumes Steven would have to be gay or aro or something for it to work. Not falling in love with this one girl =/= not falling in love with any girls at all. DS
