The ashen quadrant is a marvelous thing. It dictates a societal role in which an individual witnessing a caliginous relationship going off track may step up and take on a role as mediator between the individuals involved. In this, it is one of the most insidious social constructs I have ever witnessed. Not only does it absolve society as a whole of the task of keeping track of careening relationships, it even manages the impressive feat of lifting this burden from the very people doing the careening. It is not the job of your friends to make sure you don’t make bad relationships decisions where kismesissitude is involved, and it is not your job either. You, after all, are filled up with caliginous feelings and can’t be held responsible for your actions. No, rather, and auspistice, a third, otherwise unrelated individual, is meant to recognize what happens and be driven by mysterious forces of troll serendipity to interpose themselves between you and your unfortunate paramour for the good of society.

I’m not sure I can really articulate beyond simple description of the phenomenon how fucked up that is. Just, what the fuck. How do you fuck up this much? Just, one thing. When this precarious clusterfuck of a quote unquote “safety net” inevitably collapses (as we’ve seen it do several times in Homestuck, mind), who do you think is usually going to pay the price? The higher castes, with their social clout and stranglehold on the legal system? Or the lower ones, whose deaths are mere footnotes?

And then there’s moirallegiance. Like matespritship, it’s something that we’ve seen can genuinely work out, and work out for both parties. Still, like with auspisticism, I can’t help but shake the feeling that it’s a reshuffling of responsibility, an invitation to dump all your problems on someone who might not be in a position to handle them, not to mention

As a final note, I’m not saying these institutions can’t be reformed, can’t be dealt with in a healthy manner. I’m just saying that they exist in a particular context, and that in that context, they all seem suspiciously arranged to serve the purposes of power.
