I’m in China for work for the next several days (that actually made it difficult to see Act 7, but I managed!), so I expect it’ll be a little while before I’m ready to post reviews. But stay tuned! True, it’s open-ended (though that might change soon), but that doesn’t bother me one bit. I think that the last couple of weeks has been an epic end to a far-reaching story.

Straight out of an 80’s game show. Well, except for the homicidal robotic host. Toby Fox has a talent for mimicking one particular type of music or another, depending on the needs of the scene. Take away the chiptune / soundtrack label and this soundtrack covers just about every kind of music there is. This is just one of the stronger examples.

The second half of [S] Collide is up there near the top of my list for Flash animations, not least because of the music. I reviewed the two songs from that half (Eternity Served Cold and Heir of Grief) a while back, so feel free to check out what I thought back then! Likewise, since Act 7’s music came off of Clark Powell’s album Symphony Impossible to Play, I had a chance to review 1 Overture too.
I’ll probably put up some commentary on [S] Collide, especially the new music, in a couple of weeks, after I’m back from China.
Megalovania (by Toby Fox) is probably the most talked-about of the Undertale songs. And I like it a lot. I think it’s the most polished, highest-energy version of this song released to date. But it’s not my favorite song on the album.
It’s not even my favorite version of this song, for that matter. I like MeGaLoVania (from Homestuck Vol 6) even better. It stands out as a great example of how collaboration on the Homestuck music team could create something greater than the sum of its parts. It’s pretty easy to divine how the song breaks down: Toby’s original Halloween Hack version of Megalovania serves as the song’s heart, and Tensei lays his electric guitar virtuosity over the top. Two different sounds, one kickass track. A fantastic collaboration.
That’s not to run this version of the song down. It’s the perfect fit for a boss-fight in-game that I couldn’t bring myself to even attempt. I watched it on YouTube like all the rest of us craven fools who didn’t want to get our hands dirty. It matches the boss’s ‘i guess I have to show you how easy and pointless it is for me to kill you’ spirit to the letter.

I get the most enjoyment out of the worst singers and the best singers, but there’s this weird uncanny valley of unlistenable music separating them.
