I thought I had already posted this. Apparently I did not

hello! do u have any tips for art improvement? sorry if youve gotten this ask before. :3c

Hello anon, so sorry I haven’t been answering asks recently as I’ve been quite busy. Yes I have been asked this before but it was on my strawpage so I could only answer very briefly e.g. I’ll go more in depth (below cut).

It’s very hard to describe art improvement without being directly biased to myself, especially under short time so please don’t take anything too literally in reference to myself. That’s specifically why I never recommend just studying exclusively from direct teaching resources and I’d feel annoyed with myself if I was just telling people to do what I did.

Also sorry all of this is very rushed and not as helpful as it could be, I’m writing very fast because I’m with a friend right now. If you need an expansion on anything please ask and I will try to get around to it (better than this at another time.

Oh also I mentioned it on twitter but I now have a YouTube playlist containing speedpaints of mine (including one for this piece) for anyone that is interested.

I will be updating it with anything new from now on so save it if you want to check for anything new. I won’t be reminding people every time I post a new drawing or anything.

I literally could not know less about welding I just wanted to draw him doing that

do u think there r any parallels btwn dirk and jackceptiveye egos,,

Yeah

i love your art so much! i'm so impressed with how expressive and vivid your paintings are. if you don't mind, could you please share your rendering process?

Thank you, yes I will try. All of this largely only applies to my paintings instead of sketches or something. Info under cut

I could probably go more in depth but I’ve been mulling over the various requests I’ve had of this sort and I just find it pretty difficult to actually explain how I color. I go on about it a lot but a lot of coloring really is just feeling it out and looking at it from far away and stuff. Remember that I’m a teenager who draws for fun and nothing I say is bible and neither is the other guy yes even the professional. Walk your own road I don’t really know that much.

I hope this helps at all. I’m not good at tutorials I never have been. I also don’t really know what “rendering” is outside of video editing and 3d modelling I’m sorry… I’m not very hip. I think it means coloring so just excuse me if it doesn’t even.

First things first, love the art. Lately I've been trying to practice drawing dirk more but I've been having difficulties with his hair, any idea to break it down into easier parts?

I’m not sure if I’m the right person to ask for this considering I draw Dirk’s hair more attuned to my preferences (my internal Dirk hair headcanons are very important to me nowadays) but this is kind of how I envision / draw his hair.

Most of the volume is at the middle layer. The layers near the top are longer, which allows them to lie on top of the shorter and more layered strands giving it that kind of conical side profile. Thats what stops it from just looking like Bakugo Katsuki’s hair, how I rationalise it anyways.

I know some people will draw it differently but you did ask me, I also draw it differently sometimes (not really someone who’s married to specific interpretations, just have favorites). My headcanons are always evolving.

Just test out what you like I’d say. I know some people get really persnickety and elitist over hair which is really dumb in my opinion so just don’t listen to them. Draw his hair how you like your vision is yours, this is mine I guess. Hair is hard to draw it’s one of my weaker points
