There’s just a lot of plot convenience and ushering of the reader along from setpiece to setpiece. You can tell the author really took her time and sat down and plotted out every pretty locale and expository clue and then stuck to that godpath religiously.

Which is not necessarily a bad thing—especially if you’re writing something where information needs to feel tight, such as a mystery or tightly-paced thriller. But I tend to fall into the “pants it” category over the “plan it” school of thought and so, for me at least, you can feel the lack of spontaneity in the work. (Which is a fancy way of explaining I have a bias.)

The characters are excellent though. They’re the good kind of structured: she knows who they are and how they act and keeps those motherfuckers perfectly in line with themselves.
