unprompted, but I’ve been thinking of the best way to describe the difference between a subjugglator and a laughsassin in my mind.
i think it’s best to see the different military prongs you can get into (threshecutioner, ruffianihilator, laughsassin, etc.) as, like, courses you might get into in a school. anyone can get into basically any one, but obviously you’re expected to have the sufficient skills required to participate in that course.
the subjugglators are a sort of brotherhood entirely separate to that. you can be a subjugglator and a ruffianihilator, or a subjugglator and a laughsassin (note that Gamzee clearly already is involved with subjugglator cultism, but still aspires to be a laughsassin). it just happens that a large amount of subjugglators are laughsassins, which leads to a large subjugglator influence in laughsassin ranks. as such, if you’re a laughsassin, you’re more likely to be caught up in subjugglator affairs, and might be assigned to more service to subjugglators.
to bring in a comparison to sparta (can you tell i’ve been studying it at school), the military prongs are like messes. once you’re in a prong, you are part of that prong, and expected to participate in comradery with other members of that prong, as well as contribute to its upkeep (i.e. with contributions of foodstuffs and other resources, and participating in the prong’s actual military assignments). failing to do so would see you cast out of the prong, and essentially fucked as far as anyone else in the empire’s concerned.
here’s a thought; could the laughsassins be a replacement goldfish for the legislacerators?
we know in the current-night Alternian empire, legislacerators are “CONF1N3D TO STUFFY COURTBLOCKS 4RGU1NG C4S3S B3FOR3 H1S HONOR4BL3 TYR4NNY,” but that they used to be “D3PLOY3D THROUGHOUT TH3 G4L4XY TO 4PPR3H3ND CR1M1N4LS BY 4NY M34NS N3C3SS4RY.” it’s heavily implied that this work was done under the command of the subjugglators (the legislacerators are “the court’s”).
personally i reached the conclusion that use of the legislacerators was restricted by the sea dwellers because it gave the highblood council far too much reach in its control. but with a bunch of assassins at their control, it would appear the subjugglators have another group to fill their krypteia role anyway.
If you’re looking for an in-universe explanation for the word ‘baby’ being in the new Hiveswap song, consider it being transliterated from Alternian script as meaning that it was translated from the Alternian language. We know that Alternian language doesn’t translate 1:1 with English (their words for friend and enemy are the same, for example), so it would just seem that in this case, an Alternian word that means young (likely in a demeaning sense) has been translated as baby for the ease of us human viewers.
Isn’t that totally easy and so much better to accept than any other possibility. yeah. totally
