okay, this was meant to be a single thought before i went to bed, but since i’m thinking about the denizens as mirrors of the parents, and the fact that the word strife was deliberately chosen to evoke both violence and misunderstanding, it occurs to me that maybe the trolls ignorantly killing their denizens somehow connects to their lusii necessarily passing away (vs. the kids’ parents being able to come back in a new form)…

and strife being called ‘grief’ in the alternian language is obviously a play on 'griefing’ as a synonym for trolling and to 'give someone grief’, but maybe it also hints in a way at the 'grief’ associated with the loss of a parent?
