The ultimate problem with Homestuck’s ending is how it’s obvious that it was Andrew Hussie’s original planned ending.
You know. The ending from back when Homestuck was supposed to be shorter than Problem Sleuth. The ending from back when Homestuck was going to be done in a year. The ending from back before the trolls were major characters, when Bec Noir was the final boss, and Act 6 was going to be shorter than Act 5.
The problem is that Homestuck grew and grew and grew. It swelled way beyond the borders of what Andrew Hussie had ever intended. His characters developed unintended depths and his mythos became unfathomably deep, riddled with questions and puzzles and loose ends, and his ending didn’t grow to meet that.
This ending would have been great if it had happened back at the end of Act 5 instead of Cascade. But it didn’t. It happened after 7 years of progressively wider and deeper plot points, character arcs, relationship development, and myth building.
It was a static ending to an organic story. If you can’t stick to a goddamn outline, don’t try to use the original ending you had planned before you deviated. It just cheapens and ruins both.
