dirk is a weirdo that moves really stiffly. he struggles with showing emotions in a classic strider moment. machine guy. (he’s built so many toasters he’s started asking rox to just appearify them instead of having him make a new one every time someone wants one.)
rox made everyone friendship bracelets (family bracelets?) and dave was like oh my god. fuck yes. hell fucking yes. and started making them with them and now it’s like a thing. rose and dirk didn’t care for it as much (had to stop the overthinking to remember that roxy and dave are just super sincere at their cores n have come 2 terms with that) but they wear them dutifully.
rose fashions hers into earrings in her day-to-day wardrobe sometimes and meanwhile dirk would kill you if you thought about taking his off

is it because the movies are so shit youd Expect the guy who made them to be wearing tshirt and pj pants to a premiere but its funnier if he goes in a suit

even though these things mom does are presented in an extravagant, kitsch, jokey way, her intentions always came from a place of sincerity. she is simply Funnie
but rose reads too far into it and assumes things that aren’t there, that her mother is passive-aggressively feigning interest in rose’s interests simply because the things she does are so extra. “why do all of this if not to mock me”
im telling you right now if dave lived in this household he wouldn’t assume antagonism, he’d go,
don’t forget who LITERALLY patented tangible jpeg artifacts as their post-scratch adult self and scattered shitty scummed up statue of liberties all over the planet. theres no way some of that overboard artful shit wasnt post-ironic / circling back around to genuine funny sincerity
dave’s natural state is funny sincerity like roxy. he’s had the natural capacity for this type of humor from the start and this is the direction he goes towards when he grows out of his brother’s shadow by the end of the comic. dave and roxy share an earnest “so bad its good” type of humor
