Hi! Your answers and descriptions are super impressive~ And I don't think anyone's asked this yet, so.. What would be the differences personality wise and power wise, of a Witch of Time vs a Page of Time? ~Thank you!!
Thank you! As for their difference, well to begin with the Witch pretty much has to wrestle control from something, and actively seeks out a Change, while also disliking things to not go their way. Think of Damara- She was super distressed about Rufioh cheating on her, and eventually she fell prey to Lord English’ influence, ending up serving him and becoming a weapon of Destruction for his cause. Meanwhile, a Page of Time would have people spend their time trying to aid them, maybe also aiding them with Time Loops and timeline shenanigans, while using Time to lose accountability and responsibility during stressful situations- Say, deciding to join a conversation a little bit too late or arriving somewhere when things have already gone down.
Power-wise, the Witch Changes. Manipulation of Time and the Timeline could be seen as stretching Time to last longer or slow things down around them, not unlike what I described for the Heir of Time. Jade is shown to be able to manipulate and shift the proportions, distance and speed of everything physical, so a Witch of Time would likely be able to do the same with events in the Timeline and the flow of Time itself. Meanwhile, the Page of Time, once fully realized… Maybe they could even get a Full Timestop ability? I’m sure they could also have similar time-stretching abilities, but with a more direct use of Time, Serving and the intense stockpiles of power Pages can become, I really do think a Page of Time may completely stop Time’s flow for a while.
(Lord ask 2/2) Essentially I just wanted to share this idea, since I'm really disheartened by getting Lord by the quiz's description. Idk, if you wanna place good Lord traits that would be great, sorry if this seems like I'm being a dick for whatever reason
Lords are about absolute control, I felt the Quiz’s Description was a good reminder that, as great leaders as they may be, bringing forth what they think is best, they can very easily fall prey of the temptations of absolute power, kind of like how Princes struggle with their Ego. I didn’t personally feel the Lord’s description was too negative, specially given how hard it is already to separate Lord from Caliborn, but yeah I can understand, sorry!
Also I should point out- If this is ask 2/2, the ½ didn’t reach me! Tumblr must’ve eaten it, because this is the only thing in my Inbox.
What do you think of a Rogue of Space?
Stealing Space is a cool concept because it means they could change a location’s place or take a chunk out of something, as well as the possibility of taking someone’s height or proportions and distributing them to someone else. Ever wanted to be shorter or taller? Your Rogue friend has got you covered as long as there’s someone taller to exchange your height with!
I mean maybe? It could be a cool use of those powers. I just think they’re neat.
How well do you think a Witch of Doom and a Knight of Mind would get along?
That’s hard to say- It’s already hard enough predicting someone’s general personality traits through Classpects since there’s a lot of room for different people to fit the same Classpect, let alone their relationships with each other. But if we go incredibly reductive, someone how wants to Change Doom, and someone who Serves other’s Choices, I would say they’d get along just fine!
Can you please tell me what a Heir of Time can do please??
Ding ding ding, we have our first repeated Classpect! I already talked about the Heir of Time over here. I don’t mind questions and different takes on stuff, but as I answer more and more of these questions, check the tags to see if I already answered your specific Classpect combo, or if analysis on similar Classes and Aspects can give you a better idea! I’d get obnoxious talking about the same stuff over and over if I started repeating myself.
I tag everything accordingly too divided by Class and Aspect so people can search anything they need in my blog.
In the game of Sburb, whenever there is like, a scratch, the players get replaced by their ancestors or guardians, and the players become the ancestors or guardians. Why is this?
While this is what we see happening in both Troll and Human Sessions, this isn’t necessarily what needs to happen! Skaia is a well of Knowledge, as Rose explains in Act 6 Intermission 2.
http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=006606
ROSE: To understand what happened, it really helps to understand exactly what a scratch is.
ROSE: When John severely damaged the Beat Mesa on your planet, and sent it off to Skaia to release its temporal energy there, you could view it as a kind of “request.”
ROSE: We were asking Skaia to change everything at a fundamental level, and we gave it the energy to do so.
ROSE: But Skaia is a very passive entity. It only “knows” and “sees,” but it never quite “acts.”
ROSE: When it is asked to change everything, there is only so much it has control over.
ROSE: In fact, it has control over exactly one thing. The defense portals.
ROSE: It can decide to send important meteors to different points in time than originally planned, thus creating alternate realities.
ROSE: Offshoots of promise, rather than futility.
ROSE: And it turns out the most important meteors of all tend to be the ones delivering the young players to their planet.
ROSE: So all it has to do to change everything is tweak their destination times a bit.
ROSE: All internally-prompted changes in the post-scratch universe are decided entirely by this modest adjustment to the parameters.
ROSE: It’s a very simple concept, actually.
ROSE: Yet the consequences are dramatic. It results in not only a hard reset for the session, but a partial reset for the universe too, due to the many causal entanglements between a session and its originating universe.
When a Scratch happens, Skaia shifts around the time of arrival of the Meteors, which alters the time period every one of them is sent to. It makes sense that the ones that were sent Before will now be sent Afterwards and viceversa, but there’s no written rule that says a Scratch necessarily needs to switch Guardians with Descendants, and I could definitely see a weird Fan Session where Guardians and Descendants are mixed together in some manner. Like imagine the Lalondes and Striders being Players, with John, Jade, Jake and Jane being the Guardians, that’d be intriguing!
Of course, as we know, this switching system has a glitch, that we see in action in the Alpha Troll Session. Only the Meteors with the Kids switch the Time they’re sent to in this case, that is to say, the only thing that produces this new Reality is when the babies are sent. And since the babies are sent at different times, a different group of Players grows up to Play SBURB, effectively playing a Session that’s different than the original. Because of this, the only Meteors that are sent to Earth in the Alphaverse are the Baby ones- There was never a Reckoning within their Session, and so the only two Meteors that reached Earth from the Alpha Session were the Frog Temple, which needs to exist to even begin the game, and the Meteor from the Troll Session that ended up being home to Calliope and Caliborn on Earth-C. All 8 Meteors to ensure their Birth were sent from the Session that ceased existing the moment the Scratch was performed.
Because of this System, where Alternate Realities can be formed where only SOME of the Meteors Land, the possibility of a Universe being Glitched, and thus incapable of producing the Babies through Ectobiology, is there. It’s implied to be a Glitch influenced by Lord English himself to bring forth his existence, but it’s never fully explained why it happens. We only see its consequences, and that is a Session with Ectobiologically Created Players that didn’t create Themselves, and thus NEED to perform the Scratch to retroactively exist. The Timeline in this case demands for the ‘petition’ to be made to Skaia and the Universe to be reset, because otherwise the Players wouldn’t have been born in the first place, and this inconsistency cannot be allowed in Paradox Space.
And that’s how a Scratch’s Baby-Timeline Fuckery works.
What can a mage of Void do?
Here. From now on, if I don’t answer a Question about Classpects, it’s because it’s already been answered.
Ah um!! I was wondering.. what could a seer/maid of heart do with their powers? or a seer/maid of space..?
That’s a lot of Classpects! A Seer of Heart would Know about other’s feelings for other people, who they like, and their true intentions. The Maid, in turn, would be able to Make Feelings blossom in people, Make someone better, Heal emotional wounds and possibly… Make Souls? Maybe give a Soul to inanimate objects.
A Seer of Space would know the distance between things, likely having an uncanny accuracy with anything regarding measurements. Also possibly Seeing different parts of Space, much like Jade does with her Charles Dutton Glasses. A Maid of Space would Make Space, both Creation from Space itself, Healing Space or Improving it (Think of Hammerspace, I think I talked about this when discussing the Sylph of Space), and adding Space, Distance, between objects or people.
what powers would a thief of light have, like vriska? what about a thief of time?
A Thief of Time, I talked about them already, comparing them to Diavolo from Jojo (Although his powers could be seen as a Prince of Time too) with possible Time Skipping powers. A Thief of Light though, Vriska makes a really good example, literally taking Luck from others for her Dice Rolls to be better, stealing the Spotlight to seem like the most important character, gathering Information on how things work and the battle ahead…
I did check the witch and light tags so im really sorry if you've already received this, but I would like to know about a witch of light. I hope you don't mind!
A Witch of Light could be pretty cool! With the relationship between Light and the Alpha, fate, wanting to change Fate, to change the Alpha Timeline, what should happen, could be an interesting plot point for a Witch of Light. In fact, it wouldn’t be too different from what Aranea tried to do. As a Sylph of Light, she tried to ‘heal’, improve a Doomed Timeline and make it more Alpha. A Witch of Light, instead, may nudge a non-Alpha Timeline to the path of Alpha-ness and try to un-doom it.
Other than that though, changing their Luck, their fortune, and their Knowledge, a Witch of Light could be very versatile in just about everything, not to say the literal interpretation of manipulating Light. Lasers anyone? I really like the idea of Light Players using Lasers. Sue me.
How exactly does a Scratch work?
I am guessing you missed the post I just made talking about everything we know about the Scratch. Long story short, though- The Scratch releases powerful Time and Space energies that Skaia interprets as a ‘request’ to change the Universe, and uses this Energy to change where the Meteor Defense Portals send the Babies, effectively creating a new Reality with a different set of parameters, and making the current reality Cease to Exist within the Universe.
What are a knight of mind’s powers ???????? thank !!
A Knight of Mind might stick with their friends regardless of the path they choose- Serving their Choices. I always saw them as great strategists too, Serving others through their Mind, coming up with good plans on how to continue, and aiding others to achieve victory through these plans.
Alternatively, a Knight of Mind, ‘Using’ their Mind, Weaponizing it and Serving others through it, may have some sort of psychic power. Telekinesis and Telepathy come to mind, but perhaps it could even extend to something similar to Roxy’s powers, materializing stuff from their thoughts to fight?
I'm sorry if I misinterpreted, but it looks like you implied the alpha troll scratch glitch directly affected the alpha kids session. could you please elaborate on that?
Oh! It got mixed in with the rest of the information because I wrote way too damn much in that post. There were two parts to that post- One about the process of the Scratch itself, and another about the Glitch.
The Kids didn’t have the Scratch Glitch, but it was still a notable enough thing the Game can do that I felt I should mention it in the same post, forcing an entire Universe to reset just so that they can be born in the first place, it’s kind of a really huge thing.
Skaianet plz patch, literally unplayable.
hey, would some good space powers be like, the ability to manipulate magnetic fields, or the ability to change something at an atomic/chemical level, or being able to change the weight of something at will? what about gravity manipulation?
All of these are most definitely cool uses for Space that fit the motif really well! Changing the atomic or chemical structure of something, the weight, and gravity, are a few I’ve heard and seen before, but magnetic fields? I hadn’t quite considered that and I love the idea.
I couldn't find it in the search and I don't see any signs of a closed asks so I'm going to ask, what can a mage of blood do?
An innate knack and knowledge for that which makes Friendship, identifying true friends and comrades, as well as knowing who’s likely to betray them! Maybe, like Kankri being the Seer of Blood, they’d also be able to Know information their ancestors or other Universe-selves knew? Of those related to them by Blood. Additionally, there’s the possibility of knowing where Blood is going to be spilled, that is, where Blood will be drawn, or has been drawn in the past.
What kind of powers would a mage of breath have? Would a magical language of sorts fit the motif?
It may fit a Heir or Witch of Breath more than a Mage, given they are the Magician Classes who are more closely related to ‘spells’, but with the title of a Mage, and the close relationship of Know and Change, I don’t see why not!
Do remember a Mage’s prowess is mostly in Knowing, however, even being the more Active of the two Know Classes, and Adept at Miracles, Insight and Knowledge are their power’s forte. Which is not to say it has to be their forte or their own preferred thing to do- I mean have you seen Rose? She’s great with Needles and Magic Prowess.
As for powers in themselves, a knack for Leadership, leading to Freedom, liberating those or that which they want, as well as knowing the twists and turns of the plot, they’d be kind of a really interesting Prophet for sure. Also literally Knowing Wind, maybe they can predict the weather…? That’s sort of a power I wish I had.
Hey, could I ask what the goal of a Rogue of Light is? As in, in what way they are supposed to/need to grow through Sburb? Also, what are your thoughts on Homestuck's ending?
It depends on how the rest of the Session goes, really, as well as their starting point. Like, are they reluctant towards the whole Light thing, or do they start with an affinity to it? Are they okay before entering the Game, or do they have issues like Roxy with Isolation and Alcoholism?
If they have issues, I could imagine them using imagination to get lost, maybe writing to forget hardships or reading books, or building forts if you want to go the Problem Sleuth route. What they would have to go through in SBURB though, yeah, that one is impossible to answer without knowing more about the specific Rogue of Light.
As for the ending of Homestuck though, I actually really loved it! Back in the day I almost felt like I was one of the few people who reeeeally enjoyed it, and I wrote a big theory on it and talked a lot about it. Listening to Overture still makes me cry sometimes.
How about a Muse of Time?
Oof. See, Muses and Lords are the ones I like talking about the least because with the range of their powers, it’s hard to say what they CAN’T do. I could, however, imagine the Muse of Time being some sort of Time Keeper, altering the flow of Time at their will, going back and forth and switching Timelines however they pleased, a weaver of fate of sorts, if that makes sense.
I don't see how a Knight of Time could use Time as a weapon. It seems very abstract unlike Space and all I can see them using are time clones
One of Caledscratch’s functions is to switch between a broken and repaired state, which could be seen as literally attacking with the flow of time on a weapon. Alternatively, ‘weaponizing Time’ may work like making someone age to strip them of their power and advantage. You’re also saying ‘just using Time Clones’ as if that’s not rad as hell too!
Time is very reminiscent of Music as well, so you could even have a Knight of Time who attacks at the Beat of the Music, using the Tempo to have a unique fighting style. Sort of like Crypt of the Necrodancer maybe.
(sburb rpg) yeah it's a bit more difficult in the early game ironically, with all the game constructs and whatnot. For classpects, I was thinking of just giving them a list of verbs associated with their class, and a list of nouns associated with their aspect and saying "if you can combine those to do something, you can probably do it." like you said you were seer of doom. just off the top of my head, if someone lands a killing blow on you you could say "I say that beforehand", and avoid it.
Definitely an interesting system, if you can get anything other than Critical Misses of course. :^) It could be a really cool concept though and I hope it develops nicely!
could i ask for more info on a mage of mind other than powers? like maybe their personalities/goals to accomplish, etcetera. i've analyzed this a lot but it's always cool to know other views.
Hmmmm. A Mage of Mind may have a really good grasp on how they present themselves, that is, how others see them, the vibe they give, and having insight on what their Choices should be, they may be a tad determined and forward. That being said, if someone misinterpreted something they said against their better judgement, and broke down their figure in their eyes, it would either surprise them, leave them in distress trying to pick the pieces of their persona back up, or both.
They may also become frustrated if they find that no matter what they do, things aren’t going to go their way, which would then further shatter their personal image. I could see them being pretty analytical.
That being said this is my impression, and also, one interpretation. It may not exactly match with yours, or even be the best or most appropriate! It’s all Context Sensitive.
What about a Mage of Light? A class about knowing their aspect very well and an aspect all about knowledge (and other things) seems pretty cool.
It’s not just Knowledge, though, Light encompasses Truth, Good Fortune and the Alpha Timeline. A Mage of Light wouldn’t just know things, they’d know that which is true and correct, likely also about their own fate and fortune.
So pretty much a know-it-all y’know.
How would a Witch of Doom and a Knight of Light get along??
This is an interesting line of questioning, and I imagine Serving Fortune and Truth, and wanting to Change Doom would fit well together, but I just feel every Classpect could get along with every other Classpect in the right circumstances, so it’s a bit strange. It’s like when I hear someone say they won’t get along with someone because they’re a Scorpio. Like… What?
not to shit on any past askers or anything, but i totally understand what you mean with the "classpect relationship" asks. i used to run a classpect blog and whenever i got those kinds of questions i was just stumped. because anyone CAN be in any kind of relationship with anyone. it depends on the person. i also eventually got stumped on classpect powers and personalities (since it's such a flexible system) but it's really cool to see you're handling it so well! really liking this blog so far.
Thank you! But yeah, gosh, I can’t see myself trying to decipher the intimate intricacies of two Classpects too much longer, the same way someone with a Classpect can be Good or Bad, they can also have a Good or Bad relationship with just about anyone, context is everything. And while Powersets and Personalities have a few things in common and little ‘guidelines’ for some very broad aspects of their selves, every single person is unique and trying to reduce anyone to 12 Classes ( 14 with Master classes ) and 12 Aspects is just impossible. But they’re still a good starting point and can be fun to theorize about, specially in the sense of Fan Sessions and Stories!
So can a Knight only use their aspect in weapon form?
Nope, the key word here is ‘Serving’. Using, Weaponizing, and the like are very much specific interpretations of Knight powers in certain contexts, limiting them to just using their Aspect as a weapon would go heavily against the versatility of Classpects! Also if they could only use their Aspect as a Weapon, it’d leave them with no utility for when they’ve completed the game and are ready to claim their spot as Deities of the new World.
So then... what can a Knight do? I dont wanna feel useless like how most of my friends said Knights are
How can a Knight be useless? Karkat is good at bringing his team together, even if he’s not a fighter, he’s good getting others together. And even if he wasn’t and Karkat was a big failure of a Kngiht, which he’s not, you have Dave in canon as an example of what a Knight can do. Spending all of his Time to aid his friends and those he cares about, using Time Travel and Time Loops even while he risks seeing himself die just so he can ensure the Session goes correctly and that none of his friends die. For them, their Aspect is not a Weapon necessarily, but it is a Tool, and they’re an adept at both Serving others in their needs with said tool, and using it to suit their own needs when they need to do something.
I can honestly not fathom why anyone would think a Knight is useless.
I need help thinking of a way a Knight of Light and a Witch of Doom (Suprisingly not the person from before lol) would combine their powers, some kinda fraymotif if i'm remembering that term right
Fraymotif theorizing? Nice. Al beit a bit difficult, but, hmmmm, well, with the Knight using Light and Witch changing Doom, and their Classes, I could see the Knight using Light as a Guide for the Witch’s Doom powers, or the Witch using their Doom Powers and the Knight backing it up with Light. It’s hard to even come up with something like this with how little info we have on Fraymotifs, let alone how Doom fits into a Fraymotif in essence! Hmmm… The one I have in mind the most is the one with the Knight guiding, sort of like the grid-guide Rose did for Roxy’s cubes in Collide, but with… I don’t know. What IS a Doom-y attack in the context of Raw Aspect Power?
can you try to explain how time and timelines work in homestuck? i could never really grasp all of the convoluted time stuff. hope this isn't too vague lmao.
Okay, so I was replying to this, when I realized I was 13 paragraphs in. I can’t put a Readmore in an Ask, so if you just give me a second, I’ll finish this god damn essay on Timelines in a post of its own.
Homestuck: Timelines and Time Flow
@crowdcontrolhs asked:
can you try to explain how time and timelines work in homestuck? i could never really grasp all of the convoluted time stuff. hope this isn’t too vague lmao.
It’s
not vague at all! It is confusing, but not because the system itself is
complicated. It’s actually straightforward enough, but the issue is that at any
given time there’s like, five or so different flows of Time interacting with one
another.
Obvious spoilers for the ENTIRETY of Homestuck under the cut.
Okay so to start with, Timelines in Homestuck work under the
assumption that Parallel Timelines exist- Timelines where you took a different
route, you chose something differently, and produced a deviation. However,
Homestuck also says there exists an Alpha Timeline, a Timeline that’s considered as the True Path,
what should be happening in the end, and considers any deviation from
this path to be Doomed. A Doomed Timeline is, thus, a series of events deviating from
the Alpha Timeline that Paradox Space considers redundant. No matter how far
that Timeline goes, since it’s deviated from the Alpha, it will never be
relevant, and as such, it needs to cease existing at some point. We see this
actually happen with Davesprite’s Timeline. Rose falls asleep, the last Player
Character left in the Timeline gives up, and everything around her just…
Disappears, before erasing her very existence. It’s as if that Rose had never
existed in the first place. (Except of course, Alpha Rose manages to assimilate
this Rose’s memories, likely either a Seer or a Light or a Seer of Light thing)
So this is straightforward enough. But this is only the first
layer. The next layer are Time Loops. And this is the thing Dave, and every
other Time Player needs to deal with. Whenever they use Time Powers to travel
back in time, they’re travelling back into the Alpha Timeline. But now imagine
that the ‘you’ from the past sees the ‘you’ from the Future, and
decides that they don’t want to go back in time. Given that the Alpha you
never went back in time, the one ‘you’ that did travel in time became Doomed,
they are redundant, and are fated to die. So if you don’t want your Session to fill with Dead Copies of
yourself, you need to travel back in Time. As such, you may see your future
Self warping back in time, and then you know if you don’t want that ‘you’
to die, you need to travel back at some point just like that, closing
this ‘loop’ and avoiding the creation of a Paradox.
Still with me? Okay! Because that’s only Timelines within a Session. Now
is when we get to the spicy part of Cross-Dimensional Timelines. Already within
the same Universe, there’s several elements that interact from different points
across the Timeline. Let’s take the moment the Player Enters SBURB and consider
it the Present. Before the Present, the only thing that exists within SBURB is
Prospit, Derse, the Veil and Skaia. The Battlefield is unprototyped and locked
in an eternal Stalemate, and even then the existence of all of this is only
confirmed by the Players’ Dreamselves being able to Wake Up prior to the Entry
of the Lands, implying that at LEAST the Moons and Skaia do exist. When we
reach the Present, a Land is created. This Land has history, inhabitants, that
act as though they had always been there, however as we see from the Entries of
the Kids, this is false. The Lands come into being the second the Players enter, in the
Present, but they are pre-programmed with a history.
Now within the SBURB Session in the Present, there’s the Veil. The
Veil is the Asteroid Ring surrounding the Session, and it contains Ectobiology
Laboratories, as well as the Frog Temple (Only one per Planet, so arguably only
the Kids’ Session would have this, but for argument’s sake, let’s say every Fan
Session is a ‘Main Session’ and has the Frog Temple in it). When the Reckoning begins,
the Veil’s Meteors are sent towards the Battlefield, and in an attempt to
protect it, Skaia opens defense portals that send these Meteors to various
points in the history of the Planet. Now, inside of the Frog Temple, there’s a Time Capsule. A
Stasis Device that allows anything to remain inert for Millions of
years. So when something is put in the Capsule, it travels with the Frog Temple
to the FAR past of the planet, and spends Millions of years isolated inside of
it until it blossoms and allows it out. This connects the ‘Present’ of the
Session with any point in the past of the Planet, allowing for items, people,
weapons, anything to be put in there in any point in the future that will be
retrieved at any desired point within the Planet’s lifespan.
Conversely, the Meteors that Land in the Present causing
the End of the World, eventually become Exile Stations. At some point within the Session, one,
or both Kingdoms are going to end up ruined, and Carapaces are going to lose
their homes, their way of living, and their lives. The survivors will abandon
the Kingdoms and fly through the Meteor Portals to create a new civilization on
the Planet. And when these Stations appear, they allow the contact of the
surviving Carapaces with the Present of the Session. With Sendificators and Appearifiers that
allow them to take and give items at will, Command Devices to communicate
directly with the Players, and even more complicated Devices I’ll get to in a
little bit.
This way, the Future is linked with the Present through the Exile Stations, and the Past is
linked with the Present through the Time Capsule, allowing for all sorts of
Cross-Timeline Shenanigans. Got that? Good. Because now we’re talking about the Scratch. In
the SBURB Session, in the Land of the Time Player of the Session, there’s a
Device. The Scratch Construct. They tend to be shaped as methods of storing
music- At least the two we’ve seen were, a Music Box and a Record- And contain
vast amounts of Time and Space Energy. Raw power. And if this Device is
Scratched in such a way that it releases the vast amounts of energy carried
within, Skaia will take this event as a Signal, and begin a Soft Reboot of the Universe. Skaia
will take the Energy from the Scratch Construct, and retroactively alter the Time the
Meteors were sent through the Portals. Given the Meteors carried the
ectobiologically created Players of the Session, changing the Time at which they arrived
effectively Alters the Timeline.
But the Scratch is no mere Time Loop or Alternate Timeline
bullshit. No, the Scratch is more than that. It’s a reset button. The
vast Spacetime Energy of the Scratch Construct isn’t used to switch the
Portals. It’s used to delete the Timeline. It
doesn’t create a new Timeline, it overwrites the one that was there already, and
as such, everything within the Session simply ceases to exist when the Scratch happens. However, as I said, the
Scratch is overwriting the Universe. Paradoxically, what happened before the
Scratch STILL Happened, and by being outside of the Session, outside of the
Universe, when the Scratch happens, people who once inhabited the Universe can
survive and live on beyond this reboot.
And this new Reality that is created, this new Timeline with the
destination of the Meteors changed, exists as if it had always been there, and
in fact, it always has, because even though the new Planet will
have a New Frog Temple, they still occupied the same Universe, and the Frog
Temple has a sendificator that connects Pre and Post Scratch versions of the
Universe, which as we see in Canon with Jade and Jake, has kept the two
in contact from the very beginning! In addition to this, it would seem as
though Pre and Post Scratch versions of the same Universe’s Sessions are
connected through the Fourth Walls present in the Archagents’ office,
connecting with an extra-dimensional Space where the author of the Webcomic
himself inhabits, buuuut let’s not talk about this too much okay? So. We have
the way a single Timeline works, we have the connection between the Session and
the Planet, and we have the connection between Pre-Scratch and Post-Scratch
Realities.
Now let’s talk about other Universes. The
purpose of SBURB is to create a New Universe, this is the Genesis Frog, and the
result of breeding the Genesis Tadpole, winning against the Black King to stop
the Reckoning from Destroying the Battlefield, perforating the planet, feeding
it the Grist Hoard to make it fertile, and casting the Tadpole from the Forge
by burning the Queen’s Magic Ring in it in a process very reminiscent of a
sperm cell getting to an egg. Once you create this Universe, a Gate is created
that connects your Session with the new Universe, and allows you to travel to
it and claim your place as the God of the new Reality. And as we see in the
post-Credits Snapchats, the Door that connects the Session and the Universe is Permanent if not destroyed. Jack
Noir and the Felt travel through it 5000 years after the Kids won the game from
the perspective of the new Universe, or maybe not 5000 years but they use Felt
Time Juju Shenanigans to get there exactly 5000 years afterwards? Hard to tell.
The thing is, however, that Terezi comes back to the Session, and to the Crumbling Paradox Space a
year afterwards, implying that yes, wherever the Door actually leads, there’s a
permanent portal connecting the Session that made the Universe and the Universe
itself. And in the same way, the Exile Stations that will appear in the Planet of
said Universe have devices that can send things and people to the Session that
created it, seen specifically sending a Prototyped Jack Noir to the exact instant the Trolls were
about to claim their reward for winning the game.
Adding upon the devices SBURB itself uses to connect points in
the Timeline, we also have Trollian. Trollian is a Highly Advanced Chat Service used by the Trolls
that can connect you, not just to anyone from another Chat Service as long as
you have their address, but it does this across any point of the Alpha Timeline, and across multiple
Universes. With this, the Trolls can connect and speak with the Beta
Kids of the Universe they created, through their entire lives up until the
point of the Scratch, and it allows Calliope, who lives millions of years in
the future of the Universe the Alpha Human Session creates, to chat and
interact with both the Strilondes that live 413 Years in the Future of Post
Scratch Earth, and with Jake and Jane who live in the Present of the same
Planet. It seems that Trollian loses contact with any Timeline that is Doomed,
as seen when they stop talking to the Kids after John dies in the Davesprite
Timeline, but as we see in some of the Trolls’ Screens, it does allow to talk to multiple
versions of the same person within the same Timeline,
such as the various Daves doing time loops through the Session.
SO we have the Timeline within a Universe, the connection with
it and SBURB, the connection between the two Pre and Post Scratch Realities,
AND also the connection between different Universes! That’s it right!? There’s
NO way it can’t get more complicated than this!
And that, my friends, is where the Furthest Ring comes

The Furthest Ring is the
Space Between Universes in Homestuck. It’s the great Beyond, it’s where the
Eldritch Lurk. The Confines of Space-Time. It’s Homestuck’s Version of that unknowable extra-dimensional Space where the Eldritch Inhabit that has been described before in all sorts of media. This is a realm inhabited by the Horrorterrors, Immortal, Eternal, Chaotic Beings opposed to the forces of Creation, presumably because each time a new Universe is made a Bubble pops in their turf and they don’t want neighbours. They’re actually pretty chill all things considered. The important thing about the Furthest Ring, however, is that there’s no Time or Space in the Furthest Ring.
It’s a Space outside of common dimensions, and its fabric is permeated with the 12 Aspects of the Homestuck Universe. Sometimes walking a distance will send you back in time, or staying still make you change locations, there’s few ways to map or predict a journey through this Space, both Where and When you will end up. Only through Frames of Reference created by the Cracks Lord English creates with his mouth lasers, destroying reality itself, through Foresight, such as Rose’s Seer of Light abilities telling her where to go, or through Willpower alone, with the Furthest Ring guiding you to where you need to be the most, can you actually navigate it. And so, once you leave the Universes or the Sessions and find yourself in this weird plane of existence, all Timelines converge because, no matter where you come from, everything is fair game out there.
Not only that, but after Feferi requests the Gods to blow Bubbles for her and their friends to Dream and remain as Souls, effectively becoming the Homestuck Analogue of the Afterlife, the Bubbles become a cauldron of Information from every single Timeline, Doomed or otherwise, and all three Universes the story spans. The Alpha Trolls, the Beta Trolls, the Beta and Alpha Humans, Lord English, Calliope, Alt Calliope, Bec Noir, PM, the Felt, everyone ends up in the Furthest Ring at some point, Dreaming or Dying or passing through Physically, and as such, all events in Homestuck mix together outside of their respective Timelines.
And yet there’s STILL one more thing. Beyond the In-Universe Mechanisms and the Extra-Universal Bullshit, past Alpha and Beta and back to Alpha, A, B or C, there’s still one thing that makes Time even more of a Mess in the realm of Homestuck. The Retcon.
It’s hard to say exactly what John’s powers are- If just an amplification of his own powers as the Heir of Breath, or a new Power Caliborn’s Juju grants him. Whichever the case, one thing is certain, John becomes effectively unstuck from the events that transpire Homestuck. The Alpha Timeline becomes meaningless to John, distance and time become irrelevant- Or it would if he could actually control his God Damn powers properly. But of course this isn’t the case.
See, John’s powers are very special in the sense that they grant him control over the more Meta aspects of the comic. Narrative coherency goes out the Window, because John has, effectively, left the Story. So when he goes Back in time, he’s not creating a new Timeline. He’s editing the Story. He’s inserting himself into another point of the Narrative Timeline. This makes him not actually need to follow any Loops, and not create Doomed Timelines. He’s Changing the plot. Most of these uses are gags, with him being unable to control When or Where he goes, he just appears at random during events that happen in the story, and leaves marks such as his arm poking out, the glow of his body, or a stain of ink. But there’s one thing he does manage to fully Retcon, and that is the Game Over Timeline. Following Terezi’s instructions, he alters the plot to bring Vriska back. He brings Roxy and his Land with him to the new Session he created by bringing Vriska back, and carries the Ring from another Timeline for Roxy to revive Calliope.
However even this Canon-Breaking power is something defined within the Narrative of Homestuck. It changes the plot, but given Homestuck knows and plays with the fact it’s a story, it also plays with the fact that this power has its limitations, and its consequences. For one, the Retcon Powers are necessary in the first place for Lord English to be born, which, as stupid as it sounds, makes the power to change the plot actually necessary to complete the plot. Second, even though John can change virtually anything in the story, every change comes with a price.
This is seen in the Timeline he creates by reviving Vriska. Since he’s carrying himself, Roxy, and a couple of Sprites to the new Timeline, the John, Roxy and Davesprite of that Timeline are Doomed to Die to make room for them. Curiously, this doesn’t seem to apply to everyone- In the End, there’s two Nannasprites going around, implying that either Sprites are seen as ‘irrelevant’ enough by the Timeline to allow duplicates, or that by the End of Homestuck we’re not even following the true Alpha Timeline, and instead just the ‘Changed’, idealized version John has created to escape the Alpha Timeline.
In this way, the Retcon Powers work similarly to the Scratch, where things technically are Changed, Reset, but there’s still ways to escape its influence. John stops Terezi from killing Vriska, but the Dead Vriska from the original Timeline still exists, because she’s in the Furthest Ring. And as there’s no proper Space or Time flow in the Furthest Ring, she exists outside of the normal parameters of the story.
And THAT is how Timelines work in Homestuck. Again, by itself, each part isn’t that complex, but given the story of Homestuck happens across 3 different Universes, several pocket Dimensions, the Furthest Ring, and has things such as the Scratch and the Retcon, it gets incredibly convoluted the further you get into it.
Hope this cleared something up! Or… Maybe it made you more confused.
My page reloaded as I was completing the very last question I have never been so angry in my goddamn life
PFFT I am so sorry, a friend of mine accidentally refreshed before they got to see the Result of the Quiz and had to take it again- And then CLOSED it before seeing the points they’d gotten on other Classes, leaving them without knowing if they had tied or not. That’s just the way it is with Quotev, sadly. Sorry to hear!
What would being a mage of rage entail?
With the new description of Rage by the Canon Test, about tearing down false truths, I could see a Mage of Rage knowing faith from zealotry and understanding what is a righteous conviction and what is just fanaticism. They would likely also know literal Rage, maybe either being angry themselves or knowing others who give in to wrath easily, or simply understanding why some would get all angry about something. If you believe in the interpretation of Hope as Narrative Coherency and Rage as Narrative Contrivance, you could also say the Mage of Rage would know how the story makes no god damn sense.
What's one to do in the event of a tie in that class test? I got 13/13 for two classes. I'm not sure what to do here :<
If you got a tie, really, read both descriptions! See which one you think is more ‘like you’. If both sound very much like you, you’re free to choose them based entirely on the outfit’s looks or the powers, as well. People are complex and not really able to be divided into 12 perfectly neat and different Archetypes. There’s overlap, there may be things not talked about. In a case like this, follow your heart.
Is it normal to have five ties for the quiz? Also, how does the quiz determine what class to give you if you do tie?
GEE anon, how come your Quiz lets you have FIVE ties?! That really shouldn’t happen. But also I could see it happening? The fact you’ve got 5 Ties can only mean that you didn’t hit any of the Questions that value more points towards a specific Class. The Test compares Classes, and when it’s comparing Classes of the Same Verb, two of the five answers will give 3 Points to one or another of the Classes. 5 Ties has GOT to mean you didn’t strike any of these 3-point Answers, and managed to have 5 different Classes with the same punctuation.
In case of a Tie, Quotev literally draws a Random Class from the ones you tied with, can’t quite change that sadly. But yeah, I would recommend you re-take the Quiz if you want and try to see if any of the more intense responses call out to you more than others? Otherwise, read the 5 Classes you got and see if any specific one really speaks to you.
I took the quizzes and I got a Sylph of Heart, what exactly does that mean? o:
Improving and Healing Affection and Feelings. Patching emotional wounds, meddling into other’s love affairs to try and improve and fix them, or making romance blossom among their pals. They may also heal Souls, if a Soul is damaged if that can even happen in Homestuck? Maybe something like. Sollux being Half Dead, they could fix him right up. They could also Make Souls, again similar to the Maid of Heart, whatever Making Souls means, whether it be giving the Dead a new Souls or giving inanimate objects a Soul.
That's really cool actually, I'm glad I got the class/aspect I did c: thank you for the explanation!
No problem at all, glad I could give some guide to your Classpect stuff! :D
godammit, I took the class test bc I'm the Word's Most Indecisive Person and ended up with a 3 way tie between seer, rogue, and muse. I always get ties, I should've known the world would force me to make yet another decision >:/
If it makes you feel any better, Muses and Rogues seem to bet wo of the most popular things to get on the Quiz, while there’s a very small amount of Seers, so you may want to look into being a Seer.
Could you help me out and tell me what a Knight of Void is like/is capable of?
Whew, okay, so someone who Serves Nothing to others may be kind of a weird Knight right? Helping others through inaction? We know Horuss mentions no one having ever served him anything, and how he came to all his conclusions about himself with deep introspection, so it’s fair to say a Knight of Void could not Serve anything to others and remain out of their friends’ affairs entirely.
Alternatively though, they may use the power of the Horrorterrors to help those in need, perhaps at risk of becoming controlled by them. Or maybe they serve Lies to shield others from the harsh truth? Hell- They may use ‘nothing’ to Serve, as in, they fight with no weapon, no armor, just them and their determination.
So yeah, as with so many things with Void, there’s a big duality there.
I got seer of space I understand that I can see space but will I be able to shrink planets and teleport like jade did or do I just see things that's happening somewhere else like in another universe/planet
Rose may have been a ‘Seer’ of Light but she didn’t just ‘Know’ did she’ She had powerful Magic, at first seemingly more related to the Horrorterrors, but then with Echidna’s Quills, acquiring a white tone. Similarly, she also used lavender and bluish-white spells against Condy in Collide. Rose harnesses Light Magic, and in a similar way I could see a Seer of Space harnessing Space Magic. Teleporting and Shrinking? Not sure. Maybe yeah, maybe not. Do you want to shrink and teleport stuff?
you mention in the timeline post that the Scratch Constructs "contain vast amounts of Time and Space Energy", but also that they are in the Land of the Time Player. does that mean it would also be possible for a Scratch Construct to be found in the Land of the Space Player? or is there something I'm just not aware of? (I'm kinda new to this still -n- )
The Scratch Construct is always found in the Time Player’s Land- However, they require Echidna’s Quills to be scratched, which are Space-themed (Or something equally as strong, like Bro’s god damn Katana apparently?)
I mean we only see two Sessions with the Scratch Construct, I don’t recall if it’s ever explicitly said they’re only in the Time Land- However given they seem styled after music recording devices, and Time is related to Music and Tempo, it’d make sense that it’s always there.
Hey! I took your Class quiz and got Prince but usually I would get Sylph, and It was an Class I was comfortable in, but the Prince description fits me better than the Sylph, particularly with how I've changed over the years. I have always been in between on the aspect tho. As a Prince of Breath, I'm around where I would be in life right now, but would my aspect invert with my Class making be a Prince of Blood, a title where i would have to grow into and may become a better person through?
This is a really common misconception, that the Destroyer Classes must be the opposite of their apparent alignment, and I don’t quite agree with that train of thought! Take Dirk for example. You could argue that he’s more Mind-leaning because of strategy, the way he does stuff, supercomputer brain Hal- But that’s no true. Dirk is heavily Heart-coded. The struggle with his various Selves, the multiplicity of Dirks in the story, his complex feelings about not wanting to be an asshole and suppressing his more toxic tendencies, how he doesn’t quite manage to court Jake without being overbearing in the Session, Dirk would not work as a Mind Player.
Similarly, a Prince of Breath may be the ‘Destroyer’ of Breath- But you’re still Breath, and a Prince of Blood would be Blood. Affinity, focus, an important part of yourself, your Aspect and your Class mix together for your full Mythological Role, yes, but each individual part is important and leaves its own trace that can’t be ‘inverted’.
i know you're getting a lot of these, so you don't have to answer/ go into too much detail if you want, but I got Sylph of Blood and I don't know much about Sylphs so would appreciate some info on that class and how it interacts with Blood? Thank you for this blog too. That recent timelines post reminded me how confusing this hellscape can get, so it's great to see someone(s) trying to clear it all up!
Hey it’s okay! If you want more info on the Sylph in general feel free to check my Quiz post- It’s got individual posts for descriptions that go more in depth about each of the Classes individually. As for the Sylph of Blood though, mending friendships and helping a Group stay together sounds like a good first step, perhaps also literally healing wounds. Making Blood and Improving Blood makes me think of a bit of an aggressive fighting style, and I could definitely see them healing themselves and others or literally generating blood to avoid bleeding out in combat. Also Making friendships and companions would fit under the probable power set.
hey, great blog! what kind of role/powers would a rogue of hope have? anything cool and magic-y?
I mean Hope always seems Magic-y doesn’t it? One who Steals Hope, Faith, Coherency, they may either try to confuse the enemy, or accidentally end up shattering the hopes of their teams, or take belief from the enemy to give it to their group- Really that sort of sounds like a Shonen character, like. Super powerful Hero shows up to save the day, and the rival is like “NO. I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS!!” and the people fighting against the rival that were losing are like “Yes! Thank you, I knew you would come! With you here I know we cannot lose!” Not sure if that’d fit the bill with the personality traits of the Rogue, buuuut it’s what came to mind. just food for thought.
I took your test and it gave me Rogue, but I identify way more with the description of the Knight; could I maybe get a description of the Knight of Life, and what kind of quest a depressed and apathetic Life player would have to go through on their planet?
A Knight of Life would Serve Life to others, so while they’d be good healers for the team, if they’re depressed and apathetic I could easily see their Agency being taken away by the team. Needing to stick with others and constantly spreading themselves thin to the point where all they do is Serve and having absolutely no control over what they do.
As for the Quest, really that’s impossible to tell, first of all I don’t even know your Land’s name! And as we see with Rose, sometimes the Quest the game assigns to people isn’t even what they want to do or what they would need- She sees the Game as what is, a Game, and the Quest it’s given her is stupid and childish that would work for someone less troubled and one-dimensional, but for her presents yet another shackle. Later on she does wonder what would’ve happened if she just did learn to Play the Rain and complete her Quest, but the musing is cut short by Game Over. Rose has deeper problems at this point than what a Quest can repair or make her grow out of, and it’s only through her friends and through her lovely wife that she manages to get through it.
That being said, given Serving your Agency to others and letting them control what you do would be already oppressive enough, I could also see a Knight of Life getting stumped and refusing to continue their own Quest if they get mad enough.
You have any.... authorial insert titles for the other Aspects? Like how Hussie was the Waste of Space.... I've got two: Spot of Light and Type of Blood.
Pffft. Well, we do have the canonical Nic of Time for Nic Cage, but for the others… Nothing specially comes to mind? I’m better at coming up with both a silly Class AND Aspect. Like the Lack of Sleep. Which you could very easily pin to me given I stayed up answering asks until 4 AM yesterday.
wasn't fedorafreak the Gent of Piss?
Yes he was, there’s a few silly titles Hussie came up with like that. As I mentioned in my previous post, the Nic of Time is another one. Hussie has a secondary Classpect too, as the Huss of Lips.
Hello! What kind of powers do you think that a page of space might have? :)
Being Served Space could mean a multitude of things, literally having just physical things in general being given to you, or maybe metaphorically giving you space- Room to breathe, isolation, keeping their distance. I do wonder if it means people’d help you grow in literal size? The range of things Space can do is alarming. I could also imagine having the First Guardian serving you, maybe even granting you First Guardian powers somehow.
Hello! This test is one of the most accurate ones I've seen around, and I greatly appreciate the work put into it! Can you please elaborate on powers/roles of Heir of Space and/or Hope? I simply cannot decide :( Thanks for help in advance!
Thank you very much! A Heir of Space would definitely be affected negatively by isolation. Changing through Space or Changing Space, shifting the material reality or the proportions/size of someone, the power sets would have some overlap with Jade’s since they’re both Change Classes. There may be something First Guardian related too if they are to Inherit Space, or perhaps just with the Green Sun itself.
As for a Heir of Hope, making others believe and trust in something or someone, an optimistic force to keep the team together, and using this faith and determination to change things for the better sounds like a possible starting point! Manipulating Hope, I do imagine they’d get Hopey Majyyks as well. Inheriting Hope, a big change, maybe they’re at risk of a Crisis of Faith, or at risk of losing themselves to their beliefs? Hmm…
What powers would a maid of Mind have?
Coming up with great ideas and strategies I could definitely see. Boosting their IQ perhaps to solve advanced problems or to be able to watch Rick and Morty, making facets of themselves to infiltrate a group or simply appear something different than they are… Improving and Healing someone’s psychological state, making their own Choices to overcome fate perhaps?
Also a curious detail- A Maid of Mind, if we take the wordplay of ‘Made of X’, you could have a Maid of Mind technically be like an Imaginary Friend of sorts, a Tulpa, a Brain Projection like Brain Ghost Dirk, someone not physical and in someone’s mind. Literally Made of Mind, a Thoughtform.
what powers might a lord of mind have?
Okay I can think of a couple of things but the one that DEFINITELY pops out immediately and easily? Mindcontrol. They may become a Hivemind of sorts, controlling anyone and everyone they want to do their bidding. Quite a terrifying power really.
What if LE and Calliope were swapped with Caliborn being a female Muse of Time and Calliope being a male Lord of Space?
Well that depends heavily- Was the gender switch just because of the Classes, which is not necessary if that’s the case, or to make Calliope the bad, Chaotic one, as we know the way Cherubs pass who’s good and who’s bad is through who wins in the mating process?
If Calliope is the Asshole as a male Lord of Space, I could see, rather than the Timeline falling in place to make everything follow Caliborn’s rule, it would be the First Guardians and SBURB itself, Space, that would favor the Lord, with Time, then, becoming a well of limitless possibility not bound to an Alpha, but with a possible Alpha ‘guide’ of the best way things can go, guided by the Muse of Time’s influence.
If you mean, however, just the Lord of Space being Good and the Muse of Time being evil, however, the bad Muse of Time might have a skewed vision of reality, something like, Life is Suffering, everything Comes to an End, so let’s End Everything and liberate everyone from their Pain. Commanding the Timeline down a specific path, severing Doomed Timelines, bent on Oblivion not for the sake of Selfish Destruction, but a really fucking messed up vision of reality. Meanwhile, a Good Lord of Space would be in direct Control of the Setting of the story, of the First Guardians, leading the Reality in an attempt to counter the Evil Muse’s path of destruction, maybe even directly influencing the Creation of the Universe to try and escape this Alpha Timeline.
It’d honestly be a pretty interesting shift in the story.
