What are some Character personality traits/interests that you have seen consistently through out each character under the doom aspect (or any of them in general, I’m more focused on doom but honestly I like noticing things in the other ones too)

Maybe a certain knowledge of the reality of their world? Like… Both Sollux and Mituna had prophetic visions of awful stuff that was gonna happen. Zebruh is an asshole that uses the system to his advantage while aggrandizing himself as some sort of savior or revolutionary, but he DOES identify that Alternia’s Society is awful towards Lowbloods. Wanshi has this struggle with others lying to her and knowing and empathizing with the world around her more than adults give her credit for.

So would you say acknowledging the world, as in both its qualities and its wrongs, is a doom thing?

Could be! Doom has a lot of ties to acceptance and kind of providing comfort for shitty stuff- So seeing the world for what it is seems like a good first step.

would an heir of heart, be a stand user?

Several Heart Players may be.

is that whole thing with calliope and caliborn sharing one body a normal cherub thing?

Yeah.

I didn’t know who else to share this with. I’ve never before read such a brutal review. It’s interesting to read the work being described that way. I don’t agree at all but it’s SUCH a wild take

Sounds like someone just dislikes Problem Sleuth a bit too adamantly.

I read the full pastebin version of the hussie interview and even though I'm on anon I'm a little ashamed to admit I don't understand quite a bit of it and would like to request some of your "examination!" Most of the confusing bits are at the beginning, talking about farce and metatheology or something? And the nature of the story and all that. Also the cat and mouse stuff, the coming of age stuff, oh man this is a lot of questions. Thank you so much for always being helpful!!!

Homestuck is a story about Kids growing up in a hostile reality, with a lot of symbolism that delve deep into everything from philosophy to theology, while still being rooted in a sort of absurdist comedy. I can’t really offer much more than an examination on that, there’s a lot of themes to unpack on the entire comic, and stuff that is meaningless and just for fun at the same time- I’d wait for the next Books to come out for the Commentary, they’re very likely to delve into this stuff more.

Someone on 4chan said hussie went through "personal tragedies" while writing homestuck. Is he... okay? Like what happened to him? Also does anyone know why he is all but dropped off the face of the earth?

There’s speculation that he had family issues during one of the pauses, but I think it’s a bit rude to speculate if he’s not made stuff like that public- He tends to keep his personal life away from the public eye, and I respect that.

Hi it's me, the confused pastebin article reader again! What did hussie mean by the ending was a farce but given with a straight face? Like it's a joke? But said seriously? I don't get what the joke is, or how it's a farce. Again, thank you homestuckexamination!!!

Not a farce as in that the ending is a joke, but that the entire nature of the story is presented like a farce- The tonal shifts, the juxtaposition of absurdist humor and serious themes and symbology, it both draws you in deep for its actual depth, and makes you question at the same time what is even going on, if anything meaningful at all. The Ending takes it to a whole new level where it makes you re-evaluate the entirety of Homestuck preceding it, it throws a wrench on a lot of stuff that’s happened or you thought would happen, and leaves you just wondering how long you’ve been played for a fool. A serious end to an absurdist comedy, the culmination of symbolism and foreshadowing, while leaving some threads seemingly unresolved, but solving them BEFORE the ending itself- It ties once again to the idea that Hussie made Homestuck thinking of it as a puzzle, a riddle. That’s what it means that story is farcical.

I see people talking about a class quiz, but I can’t find it. Help?

It’s not official, just my own take.

I’m going to a con this weekend and staying with family for a while after so posting may be slow for a bit!

Does anybody know why grandpa is in the medium before jade has entered? And why he's alive in there? Cause I never understood that and rereading reminded me.

There’s several ways into the medium from Earth, and it sort of acts like an outside-of-time Nexus with Earth

Finally got a PC! Still not back home but at least I can answer a bit more consistently. I would’ve been answering stuff on mobile but. I couldn’t. Tag asks on mobile. Thanks Tumblr.

why was dave's dreamself already awake? is it some time bullshittery?

Dreamselves waking up seem to correlate with either outside influences or having some sort of… Revelation, epiphany, moment of development, or some big event like that. The fact Dave is awake may relate to the fact he’s actually in a really shitty household, while in denial of the abuse and trying to normalize it- Like on some level he’s aware of how messed up everything is but cannot come to terms with it himself quite yet? I believe we got author commentary of that part now though don’t we? I’d like to see if Hussie mentions anything in the book.

if i remember right hussie implies lil cal was keeping daves dreamself up by talking to him

Hi yes what the fuck that is absolutely terrifying.

do you think a witch of rage could also mess with reality?

Maybe, specially based on the fact reality is fabricated.

How was the con?

I’ll post pics on my blog later when I can get my hands on the pics!

How did Aradia die again?

Mind Honey’d Sollux-ways!

are heart players a motherfucking jojo reference?

Please explain. I’m interested.

It was mostly a shitpost but, if you want some “serious” analysis, the Heart Players we know from Homestuck are a cat girl and a Manime Katana-wielding guy. The Heart/Soul duality is very reminiscent of ‘Kokoro’ as well.

So in conclusion.

Heart is the Anime Aspect.

Wha-wha why is everything so confusing, I’m struggling to get into this lol

Par for the course my good dude. Speculating about stuff as you go along and being amazed when the answers are provided is part of the experience!

If vriska made John fall asleep when he was helping jade to get into the game, thus making John fail at prototyping the kernel with the doll thing, thus making bec become prototyped, basically the whole thing is on vriska. I never thought about this.

She explicitly calls herself out on that and then explains how she controlled CD to orchestrate DD making Bec in the first place. She got all of the irons in the fires!

what sort of powers do you think nepeta would get if she god tiered?

Soul-swapping for sure. Perhaps possession. Love-potion like Romantic Attraction…

Do you believe Eridan snapping was partially because of the angels on his planet? I believe Doc Scratch mentioned something about that

He just kept shooting at them until they died and didn’t interact with them in any other way than hostile, so it’s not like he learned much from them. Scratch is speaking in metaphors in that conversation.

could the angels on lowaa be considered seraphim? they are pretty vengeful and angry + seraph means serpent-like, so it would fit with them not having any limbs

Aren’t Seraphim usually depicted with three pairs of wings? (Note: I know little about Seraphims). That being said, the Angels kind of look like Dementors from Harry Potter, securing that reference with Eridan- And they generally evoke that serpentine shape that’s kind of important in Homestuck Lore in general. As far as we’ve seen, they’re just Hope Elementals.

Wired plot question, what stoped aradia from us wing time shenanigans to put all ten non GT trolls on the crypt beds right before jack blew up there session. Even if they where separated (because deferent moons) aradia or possibly kanaya could have regrouped everyone for a 12 on 1 fight

Alpha Timeline. Sometimes, Trolls Dying is just more benefitial to the perpetuation of Paradox Space than everyone living. There were 1000 Aradias going around from fixing the fuck-ups of the Timeline, her very duty for Hivebent was being bound to ensuring the Timeline went correctly, I don’t blame her for not wanting to deal with Timeline Shenanigans anymore the instant she got an out.

Regardless of time shenanigans and the alpha time line, do you think that 12 got tier trolls could win against bec-Noir?

Vriska ALONE could win against Bec Noir, of course all 12 together could.

That being said, Jack’s issue is that he’s looking for a challenge, to test his power and really have fun with a big fight- So maybe he wasn’t going against Vriska with ALL he had, he was making it more of a ‘fair’ Duel so to say. Technically he could just sorta backstab-kill every single of the 12 Trolls but, God-Tier, it’d likely not count as Heroic, just like with John.

Which aspect(s) deals more with fate and destiny?

Time, Light.

I like how "kids" has as many letters as any kid name, "trolls" has as many as any troll name and "Cherubim" has as many as any cherub name in homestuck.

Huh. So they do.

Do you think that Calliope's claim that cherubs can only have black feelings stems from the isolating nature of the species, and the fact that the only other cherub you normally interact with is your polar opposite, rather than something biological? I doubt any cherubs had outside interaction with other species before so I think that's how Calliope came to that conclusion

It’s possibly something accepted normally by Cherubs, but as Homestuck repeats time and time again, there’s no such thing as a species or a kind of people that are always 100% predisposed towards something. Proving she’s more than what she believes Cherubs can amount to is a big part of Calliope’s whole arc.

Are there any trolls/kids that dont seem to fit into their godtier role or would overall act really similar to canon if reclasspected? What would you reclasspect that character as? (sorry if this question doesnt make a lot of sense)

Not… Anyone that I can think of.

Newly realised doom player here. Could you tell me what powers doom players actually have? Light specifically. Is it just destruction? Because that's the main consensus I'm getting. I really hope there's more to it than that.

“Light specifically”? I’m not quite sure how that relates to Doom stuff. Suffering, pain, death, doom, are part of Doom for sure but unsustainable energy use and big bursts of energy, technology, seem to also relate to it. On a more psychological level, while there’s paranoia and doomsaying, there’s also peacefulness in acceptance and helping others through rough times, kinda being there emphatically, you know.

I was doing the classpect & aspect test for my character, with the result of rogue of breath. While I agree with rogue, the breath aspect confuses me. On one hand, she hates and tends to be adverse towards the idea of taking leadership or being in charge, genuinely thinking she's incompetent; On the other, it does follow the description that she is avoidant, forward thinking, pursues her personal path, underestimates herself and is surprised by the esteem others hold for her. Is breath suitable?

Sorry, person who asked you about the rogue of breath thing. I forgot to add that the character also sort of goes out of her way to not be in charge or do anything in particular that puts herself in the light of a hero. Is that contrary to a breath aspect player?

That’s, if anything, even more fitting to Breath. Breath Players usually don’t seek out being in charge or in a position of leadership, there may be exceptions of course, but a big thing about Breath is freedom, being boundless, doing your own thing, not being shackled to something- Breath Players are more likely to inspire others through their actions without seeing themselves as leaders, than they are to take charge of a situation completely. Look at John, he just does his thing and lets others guide his actions most of the time, and yet most of his friends look up to him because he just kind of keeps a constant forward momentum, while also refusing the idea that he’s a leader- He’s their friend.

Doom anon: i meant knight not light

Oh whoops. Well, but for more specific combos, feel free to check here.

did the game ever say about who poisoned boldir? or was it implied to be scratch who did it

It wasn’t even implied who did it. We don’t know.

What do you do if you are stuck between classpects? Personally I am stuck between seer of mind and seer of heart. I tend to empathize with loads of people (to a large degree) and have a lot of uncontrollable drives and passions but I also think a lot about consequences too.

It’s a case by case basis that’s hard to deal with. You’re the one that knows yourself the best, give it time.

Would a seer of heart be more inclined to see and know things about the true selves of other people while having a weak sense of personal identity while a mage would have full knowledge of their true-self while struggling to understand other people?

Maybe but not necessarily, it’s more oriented towards Learned experience vs Instinctual experience, as well as the drive and aim of said knowledge.

could you elaborate more on the aspect elementals? This sounds like a fascinating subject.

I’ve talked about it a little bit in the past but overall it’s a very muddy thing. Like, Angels seem to be Hope Elementals. You could put Dirk’s Splinters as Heart ‘Elementals’ in a way. The Horrorterrors could be considered Voidy ones, and maybe First Guardians as Space Elementals? Like, creatures that generally embody a big part of the Aspect in general.

I never understood why there were carapacians on alpha earth since there was no reckoning, therefore no meteors for carapacians to be exiled on, right?

Carapacians are independent of Meteors to become Exiles, they go on ships through the Portals, which could still pop up from time to time. There’s also at least two meteors that do go through the Alpha Session portals- The Troll’s Meteor and the one with the Frog Temple, so there’s ways here and there.

There’s also the chance the Alpha Earth Carapacians aren’t even from the Session and are actually like. Part of Condy’s Genetic Experiments.

what classpect is grunkle stan?

He’s absolutely a Thief, of what I’m not sure. Maybe Life? Obsessed with amassing wealth, stealing his brother’s identity, and working ceaselessly to try and drag him back… Hard to tell.

What do you think of the idea that metaphorically or literally: Witches/Heirs become one with their aspect at a *physical* level and Mages/Seers become one with their aspect at a *mental* level?

You could make an argument for that but then again it’s a case by case basis. Heirs/Witches may ‘become’ one with their Aspect as it fits under the definition of Changed- Being Changed by their Aspect and Changing into their Aspect or as an Embodiment of it, it’s a thing that COULD happen, but it’s not a NECESSITY I feel. The Mage/Seer one is even more muddy, because becoming one with the Aspect at a ‘Mental Level’ is incredibly more abstract, not to say Homestuck argues that reality reflects your Mind and Will so technically the separation between Mind and Body is even more dubious. All in all, it’s easier to say that Seers and Mages get to know their Aspect intimately, but not necessarily that they… Become one mentally. Aspects are a part of reality after all, they may embody ideas, but they’re abstract concepts, and you can’t quite ‘mentally become’ something so expansive and abstract.

How much do trolls know about the signs? Do they know what they mean or do only Jadebloods who assign them know their meaning?

They’re Caste Signs. Like. Basically tied to surnames. If there’s any mysticism behind it it’s possible people just think of it like how people see their Zodiac Signs influence them.

Ok so its fairly clear the doc scratch/lil cal and aranea have brainwashed gamzee for basically the enitire last half of homestuck. But when aranea lost control of gamzee, sweet dear gamzee, why did he just murder terezi? High blood shennanigans?? A little bit upsetty for getting stabbed? Whats your take #Gamzee

There’s no not-brainwashed Gamzee. There’s no moment in the entirety of Homestuck where he struggles with the fact that people are telling him to do one thing or another. Without Aranea mind controlling him into a docile Juggalo, his mission goes back to serving Lord English. And with him being in a Doomed Timeline, it’s only a matter of time until he snaps and goes crazy again.

How are classes selected? Always found it be luck of the draw.

They match your character, personality, challenges, and even arcs.

So like, trolls know their sign means void or light or stuff? Like "Oh yeah, man, I am an Aquaza, which means I am mind and Derse. Idk what Derse is, but apparently I am Derse."? They know this?

They have no way of knowing what ‘Derse’ is because no one is aware of SBURB in itself. Aspects are metaphysical parts of the Homestuck Universe, but again, it may be more in a zodiac kind of sense, and likely not even using the same terms for Aspects. You know the type like. “Oh, I’m a fire sign, that means I’m x and y” “I was born on April so X Y Z”. That kinda stuff is way more likely, specially given Trolls have kind of a thing for fated stuff and karma.

There’s also like a MILLION more Signs we haven’t seen. The Extended Zodiac is just for us the Audience to see some things more clearly.

Uh so I never really understood the deal with snowman? Could you pls explain?

What exactly is the deal you don’t understand?

When ever I reread your class post on rogues from your master post I feel called out Especially with their intense devotion to those they care for

:3c

minor quiz note: question 26 lack the option of "If they don't understand and don't want to reconsider. You move on. Of course you pick up all the materials, funds and whatever that you previously contributed while ignoring whatever objections they might have." I mean, it's a bit extreme, but options provided are all basically variations of "you try to prove something to friends so they "forgive you" or "see your worth" and "let you back". There is openly "passive" option but no openly "active".

In fact, the quiz questions often have a full “I don’t want to trouble anyone even if I need help or others cause me trouble” but no “my time and myself are valuable enough so I will just go and do what I need myself even if other might be inconvenienced.” options. Not that the quiz is bad - in fact, it is the best class quiz I have seen so far, It’s just… an observation.

The Quiz questions are basically pitting Classes against each other. The answers for each scenario aren’t supposed to be expansive, they’re supposed to be a reduced set of choices that may resonate with some people, that’s why some Questions seem limited! And that’s why there’s a neutral ‘none of these’ answer to every single Question, because a Lord may just not resonate with a Seer/Mage’s way of seeing something, for example.

I was trying to say more of "passive seems to be favoured in this quiz" as most options meant to express active class were often passive while passive-coded were all the way passive most of time. Like. If a person wanted to go for muse specifically, they could have easily found all the right choices while going for lord is somewhat harder. Still possible. But not as clear. But may be I just didn't understand what you meant excactly in your answer.

Oh! Well, I aim for the ‘Selflessness vs Selfishness’ thing with the Passive/Active divide rather than actual active actions vs passive actions, so maybe that influenced it? Even then I feel I remember it being more balanced.

That being said, you are NOT supposed to be aiming to intentionally get a Class! So if anything that’s a flaw of the Muse Questions rather than the Lord ones! :p

tbh i just used "active" and "passive" cus symbol limit. But I used it in "selfish"/"selfless" sense. sorry for confusion.

Huh. Yeah I haven’t checked it in a while but I’m pretty sure I intentionally aimed for a more 50/50 split? Does anyone else feel like this too?

I kinda see the Jade bloods knowing what sign a troll will be depending on the horns. Like they have a giant book on horns of different signs and horns.

The problem is that this would imply there’s as many horn shapes as there’s Signs, and horns are a lot more limited than Signs when it comes to how you can draw them.
