Actually you can't prototype without living things. Alternative Dave could have been prototyped beceause he was doomed and Paradox Space treated him as if he was dead

The literal first thing that’s Prototyped is a Harlequin Doll, and then you have Bec prototyping himself, both filling the role of a fully inanimate and a fully alive things getting Tier-1 Prototyped. Arguably there are no restrictions to what the Kernelsprite will accept as a Prototyping Item.
