(1/2) If we're talking about troll reproduction, here's my headcanon: everyone we consider trolls are the same biological sex, analogous to earth males, that produce many, many small reproductive cells (equivalent to human semen). The mother grub is the 'female' of the species (along with imperial drones that are probably equivalent to sterile worker bees, but still the same biological species), who is fertilised by the reproductive material of the trolls, and then produces offspring.
(2/2) So all trolls have one parent in common (the mother grub), one unique parent (their ancestor), then also probably also undergo minor genetic recombination with other embryos in the mother grub, in a similar way to how bacteria swap genetic material through plasmids. This seems to hold up pretty well to canon knowledge 😊
God, we really, finally did it, didn’t we? We’re here, talking about Troll Anatomy in this blog, and about how Trolls Reproduce. I’ve always considered Drones to be actually manufactured by the Alternian Empire, biomechanical creatures as seems to be most of Troll’s Technology, with a more visibly Mechanical sway on Earth because Earth is more about robotics than about biorobotics, giving more credibility for that. Mother Grubs, being Lusii, seem to be a different species than Trolls altogether, although I do remember reading about these bees I believe? Or bee-like insects, where there was something similar, maybe. The world of bugs is extremely weird.
Canonically, I’m not sure what Hussie was going for- I don’t know if he was going for anything specifically. But as for my Headcanons… The sexual dimorphism (That makes absolutely no sense because, bug breasts) seems to indicate a difference in gender among the Trolls, which would put the Mother Grub as either a third gender, if we’re going by your theory. And if we go by my favorite theory- Trolls are actually a Parasitic Insectoid Species that entered a symbiotic Relationship with the Mother Grubs, and co-evolved with them to the point they are co-dependent right now.
