pictured: yet another fucking roxy/dirk rper making arguments as to why shipping dirk in a straight relationship is totally ok and you’re the REAL bigot for thinking maybe it’d be nice to just treat him as gay

look:

I don’t care if you ship roxy/dirk. I really don’t. I dooooon’t. but when you make these fucking excuses as though everyone ELSE is bigoted and you’re the true enlightened hero for shoving one of the only canon gay characters in the comic into a het relationship, I want to shake you by your shoulders and demand what the hell I, or any other queer person, ever did to you.

do you know how much irl gay people get this bullshit “sexuality is fluid” thing thrown at them to prove they’re not really gay?

do you know how you repeating it in a casual venue proves that you’ve bought into it and reminds us of what we have to deal with daily?

do you have any fucking idea how many queer people ask themselves daily if they’re not “really” queer because they’ve been told this so many times?

don’t fucking give me this “but it’s just rp it’s not real” shit, what you’re saying there is so fucking reflective of homophobia irl.

ship what you ship. but stop fucking making excuses. people have every right to be upset with your ship. you can ignore them and go on your way, or you could be a petty fucking asshole and try to prove that you’re the real progressive one here by making a gay dude “ask roxy what boobs feel like or something to fuel smut.”

Alright, first and foremost— yes, this RPer worded what they wanted to happen in the prompt terribly. Essentially they’re taking advantage of Dirk while he’s in a state of emotional weakness. But I feel the need to bring something to attention?

As someone who’s queer myself, I can definitely say that sexual orientation is something that’s fluid; I’m an adult who still has an incredibly fluid orientation.

I’m not saying this goes for everyone but it’s something PLAUSIBLE. Just because you say you’re gay one day does not mean you can’t be bisexual another; now saying that someone is limited to one orientation, that, my friend is bigoted.

Also, may I just bring up the wonderful double standard; John states in canon that he’s heterosexual. The amount of JohnDave shippers is titanic. Yet NO ONE flips their shit when people want to RP JohnDave or JohnKat or BroJohn etc. etc.

The moral of the story is, it doesn’t matter who you want to ship a FICTIONAL CHARACTER with. Because they are FICTIONAL. It’s not hurting anyone to RP DirkRoxy or DirkJane or JohnDave or JohnKat.

And they do have a point; you love whoever you love! And that’s great!!! But it’s not great to use a character’s emotional distress to bend things to your liking. It’s poor writing and if you insist on that being a part of your prompt it should be tagged as emotional manipulation.

now reblogging this correctly. thanks, tumblr

1) I outright said “I don’t care if you ship roxy/dirk, just don’t make excuses.” I really don’t care if they ship it. it has stopped mattering to me. but I do care when they try to prove they’re in the right for shipping it. when they dismiss the concerns other people have with “well you just love who you love, golly gee, don’t be a bigot, I’m being progressive by putting the gay guy in a straight ship.”

2) sexuality isn’t fluid for dirk god damned strider or I’m pretty sure he would not be so conflicted about being unable to love roxy. he has stated he would have tried if he thought he could have. but he has to be “true to himself.”

3) putting a straight character into a queer relationship is not even remotely comparable to putting a gay character into a straight relationship, especially not when it’s one of the only confirmed gay characters in the comic, especially when they’re staging it as rebound sex post-breakup (so, what, he breaks up with a boy and then finds ~true love~ in a het relationship? wow, not heteronormative at all, I’ve never seen that narrative at all. ever. sarcasm is a thing), especially when dirk’s inability to love roxy how he thinks she deserves is a major goddamn character point for him

I hate this “love surpasses boundaries!!!” thing being applied to gay characters because it’s taking a phrase that is mostly used by queer people, most often by bi and pansexual people, to explain how they view their sexualities. you’re taking a phrase that was all but coined by queer people and using it to justify straightwashing a gay dude.

this would not even bother me so much if dirk had not made very explicitly clear that his sexuality is not fluid, period. jake was his only option.

don’t compare dirk/roxy to john/dave again, please. it’s not a double standard unless queerness and straightness are treated as equal by society and in the media, which they’re not.

(and “no one” flips their shit? people have been flipping their shit nonstop about how hypocritical it is to ship john in slash since the “not a homosexual” log happened. I know they have. I have been there since before that, watching it unfold. plenty of people flip their shit. they are just not the same people that frequent cherubplay.)

and don’t you dare call me bigoted. my sexuality has been fluid. I know that for many people, it’s like that. I went through a very long phase of growth and change as an individual regarding my sexuality. I respect that it happens. but that’s a complete nonsequitur to the issue at hand. this “fluidity” excuse gets used all the fucking time to strip canonically queer characters of their queerness, to shove them into het relationships for ~chemistry,~ sometimes outright ignoring the exact issues that dirk strider’s relationship with roxy revolves around — that he hates himself, very deeply, and he has made his inability to return roxy’s feelings one of the items on his “reasons why I think I suck” list.
