He smelled different. Keith was used to holding him, breathing him in, but this was different. He smelled like sweat and blood and stagnation, but Keith leaned in anyways. It was him. Shiro’s eyes had trouble focusing on him, dull grey and clouded over, lacking their usual silver shine, but Keith couldn’t stop looking at them. He barely caught Shiro’s first words, his voice hoarse and weak?
“Keith?” he asked, disbelieving. He stared up at Keith like he was the last light on a dying world. Keith’s heart broke and he dropped Shiro’s recently removed helmet to the ground, tumbling to his knees next to the pilot’s chair. Shiro’s breath was weak and tired in the stale air, his skin, his lips, dry, chapped, and pale. His cheekbones stood out even more then usual.
Keith brought his hand up and let it hover for a second, not sure if he even wanted to know if this was just some dream or not. Shiro stared at him, waiting on the exact same question. Love got the better of him and Keith touched him.
The second their skin made contact, Shiro sighed, his body sagging and his eyes fluttering closed. He leaned into the touch.
He was cold, he was rough, but he was there.
Keith choked on a sob.
It was him.
He sank forward onto Shiro, his forehead falling to rest against Shiro’s own, their noses just barely touching. Shiro’s breath was awful but Keith didn’t care.
Shiro was trembling under his touch and Keith brought a hand up to card back through his long hair, tangled and dirty, but when Shiro gasped, Keith could do nothing but hold him just like that.
