Howdy-do ! I can certainly try to explain my process !
With mech, I always start with an idea first, and I draw it how I usually do itโ Like say, Mephisto’s prosthetics ! The first step is to just draw regular limbs first and figure out the individual parts. This is the “it does not need to look good it just has to exist first” stage, and you’re basically just doing what you know. [Four limbed Mephisto jumpscare]
Now, you’re gonna take these shapes and try to see exactly how they join together and bend. I like doing it by taking everything apart in 3 groups- The big shape (The “flesh” if you will, basically everything you see on the outside), the lil shape (Articulations for the big shape, basically what allows it to move) and the connectors (The skeleton for how your big shape is going to be structured ! it defines how lifelike or how robotlike your character will feel depending on how bendy or stiff). The simpler everything is, the better for stylizing !
Looking at ball jointed dolls and other such puppet characters has really helped me understand anatomy as a whole, but it’s been especially helpful to robots since it has that certain natural stiffness to it, which I personally find crucial in robot designs. Here it is applied to the diagram !
Then, you’re gonna wanna refine these shapes into something more cohesive ! Really string everything together with the same principles, but a little more stylization. These still look like limbs, but you can see exactly how they bend and stay in place through the exposed articulations. Just remember to keep it all relatively straight-edged and using of the skeleton to make sure you don’t get too organic looking ! Mech is about geometric designs most of all !
And finally, once you feel it looks good, you go back in again and carve out your detail ! Add some stuff to that guy ! Make him look more interesting !
AND you still get to follow principles ! How fun is that !!!
The best way to practice this method imo is to just trace over robots you know and love. Transformers especially is a really good source of inspo for me, since they’re made with toy features in mind and therefore allow for greater range of movement. You can do it to basically anything though ! Even more humanoid looking bots ! Here’s two I did on Optimus prime and Fl4k from BL3!
A really good tutorial on this stuff is How to think when you draw: by TheEtheringtonBrothers on DA. Seriously, their stuff is highly informative, and they do a better job explaining than I ever could ahaha. They’ve got a bunch of tutorials with really good breakdowns of fundamentals and all that stuff up on their pages too, so I highly reccomend you check em out !
But yeah, most of all, practice is your friend. Observe how other people stylize machines and try to replicate it, read up on tutorials, see real life machines, get inspired by your favorite cartoon robotsโ It’s all part of the process ! Like with anything in art, you need to crack a whole lot of eggs beforee you finally learn how to make an omelet you like, but whats most important is that you make an omelet at all. Some stuff is gonna burn or turn out not how you wanted it, and that is also normal, so you need to learn to embrace it and keep on going !

HI HI!! ty for giving me the excuse to ramble abt juno hes my favorite deadbeat
hes primarily an unarmed fighter despite being 2 apples tall. i dont have his special traits on hand but hes got low charisma (hes an asshole), low luck (black cat style), and high constitution (gets punched a lot for being an asshole).
before he got shot he was pushing for an independent vegas, or as much as he could without facing repercussions. former king who made his way into vegas with his wife sofia and got cozy with the chairmen.
benny sells sofia a lie abt junos death that she. does not believe and then boom. girlhusband returns. she was born into the followers and has a much stronger moral backbone, whereas juno was just kind of winging it post-memory loss.
after he gets shot he loses his sense of self and essentially becomes a stranger who has to fill the shoes of the person he used to be. but he justโฆdoesnt care as much as he used to. different guy, different wants. he has a rather apathetic look at the whole of vegas and doesnt get too involved until it gets personal.
and he has met the bos! though only through veronicas questline and chasing down elijah, and by then hes pretty fatigued with the whole lot of them. being fiercely protective over veronica and pushing her to join the followers means hes not exactly. their biggest fans by the end of the game
and ive been tossing the idea back and forth where hes my lw as well, though idk how he feels abt the lyons id have to replay 3 for that, its been a Minute. i want to saaay he was reasonably happy with them? regardless he wants to crunch the outcasts up like a piece of tinfoil.
post-fnv he goes between the divide and the mojave a lot. he got exiled from new vegas itself on behalf of being a pretty shitty leader by his wife (and coyote, a raider who takes his place) so its the independent ending hes just not the one working with yes-man anymore. he has a category 4 mailman yaoi moment with ulysses and it solidifies his whole Yeah Im A Different Person Now mentality.

im going to be honest, the only borderlands fic ive read in the past few years have been yours. i WILL take the opportunity to talk up your writing however because i always do. specifically your delirium has been in my head recently ive been putting off drawing something for it. your monty is so interesting.
there was also another fic thatd id recommend if i could but it got deleted way back. nisha, timothy, angel, rhys and vaughn got arrested by the crimson raiders. timothy got executed at the end iirc. it was a small one but i still remember it very distinctly because of how nisha was written in it.

hm! for characters probably sasha and fiona! ive had a fiona sketch saved up but posting her without her baby sister feels wrong they should not be separated. for ships, i havent actually drawn nisha and aurelia yet so. perhaps soon.

dog/god my dearest friend. i didnt think much of him when playing dead money for the first time but ive gotten attached since then. not too sure about ships though, theres not that many to begin with i dont think. boone and manny, maybe.

just the sheer amount of creativity that comes with fan content outside of the games canon. the modding community is massive, and fnvs world has so many opportunities for variety in player characters.

hmmโฆulysses is pretty tricky for this one. my joke answers would be making me run through deathclaws and not blowing up the think tank while he had the chance but serious answerโฆmaybe the courier’s mile? but even then its him lashing out in a way that adds well to his character.

TYTYTYYYY YIPPEEEE!!! tales era angel is probably my favorite to think abt when it comes to my rewrite. she’s kindddd of an antagonist bc she doesn’t want jack to make it to helios and she wants to prevent the travelers vault from being opened.
but before that, shes orchestrates the deal between vallory and the vhs to go after athena, and she guides brick and mordecai to where they show up in game. they get athena and find out that rhys has jack in his head and angel drops everything to go deal with that
she ends up getting strong armed into everything by vallory though. since she’s the local leadership and angel is trying her best to make pandora whole, pissing off the queenpin isnt really something she wants to do.
she figures she can get rhys to helios and stop things there (fry his brain) but then jack gets uploaded into the system and. ruh-roh.

Comparing Heights. Input the heights of characters to see what the different is between them. Great for keeping consistency. Free.
Magma. Draw online with friends in real time. Great for practice or hanging out. Free, paid plan available, account preferred.
SketchDaily. Lots of pose references, massive library, is set on a timer so you can practice quick figure drawing. Free.
SculptGL. A sculpting tool which I am yet to master, but you should be able to make whatever 3d object you like with it. free.
Pexels. Free stock images. And the search engine is actually pretty good at pulling up what you want.
Figurosity. Great pose references, diverse body types, lots of โhow to drawโ videos directly on the site, the models are 3d and you can rotate the angle, but you canโt make custom poses or edit body proportions. Free, account option, paid plans available.
Line of Action. More drawing references, this one also has a focus on expressions, hands/feet, animals, landscapes. Free.
Animal Photo. You pose a 3d skull model and select an animal species, and they give you a bunch of photo references for that animal at that angle. Super handy. Free.
Height Weight Chart. You ever see an OC listed as having a certain weight but then they look Wildly different than the number suggests? Well hereโs a site to avoid that! It shows real people at different weights and heights to give you a better idea of what these abstract numbers all look like. Free to use.
