All of this, and it also disregards how in Borderlands 1, she was the one who pioneered Eridian tech studies in the first place. Her life’s goal in that game was to find that vault so she could have concrete proof that the eridians were not only real but that she understood them enough to have decoded several of the things they’ve left behind. She literally got kidnapped BY Atlas because she knew so much about vaults when there was such a scarcity of information. Did they forget or.
Actually nevermind because Typhon exists in such an atemporal context in Borderlands as a series just in general. You’re telling me he already found all the vaults by the time Borderlands 2 was happening, had kids with a siren queen, went into hiding, and ALSO had time for those kids to grow up into adult cult leaders who take over pandora overnight? Borderlands 1 is an extremely clunky old game with a lot of potential right out of the gate, and although I really do enjoy it for the most part (The humour used to be a lot more self contained, there were different enemy types aside from just the usual Bandit Re-skinned, the variety in locations on the maps were fun to see, the maps were also just better designed with more stuff in them, New Haven is there with my wife Helena Pierce etc), there is absolutely a lot of problems with it (The pacing is agonizingly slow, things don’t seem to happen because the world is moving around you they just happen because it’s time for the Vault Hunter to do something now, there’s an uncomfortable amount of silence when no one’s tapking, the villain is a complete joke, the CONTROLS are SO BAD !! Etc), problems that I think could be easily fixed with the help of a remaster for the game. Given how neglected it is by Gearbox with how insistent they seem to try and decanonize it all together despite all the cool things it does, I highly doubt its ever going to happen, but ah, oh well. I can still appreciate my shitty little thing with all my heart if the corporation who made it won't— hey that sounds familiar,
BL1 is genuinely may be my favorite game that ive ever played. wish it was good! /hj
but mann i could talk about it forever. pandora itself just feels so strikingly different in it than in the other games. its so much more grounded (for better or worse, gameplay wise.) and the time you do spend with npcs make them feel personally connected with the VHs. marcus propositioning the VHs, helping ned and TK, angel being somewhat more playful, even pierce’s scolding (which is very deserved).
the environments as well are so memorable. specifically thinking about the cave in skag gully and the small community in tetanus warren. i think BL1 handles inside areas very well in comparison to the other games where a lot of the time there is just so much space. BL1s got a lot of tight corners youve got to fight through. sledges warehouse in comparison with the bloodshot stronghold, for example.
and then just the big, empty grays of the salt flats that start the desaturation going forward until the end of the game. the warm colors of the desert being replaced by the harsh reds of atlas and then going fully white at the end.

For as long as there have been Caedes, there’s been something deeply wrong with the family. Maybe from how they carried themselves as survivors of the wasteland first, bandits second, maybe just from how so many of them seemed intent on proving how good they are at surviving, which drove people away in droves from the fear. Either way, it was obvious what was happening there was no ordinary problem, it was something deeply embedded into who they were as people— A terrible curse, some might say. But who could prove it…
Ominous narration and perhaps relevant details aside, here’s a couple things about the Caedes !
- Lucio Caede was the last official leader to their family clan, which disbanded when both his sons (Archer and Jonah) decided they didn’t want to manage territory that big with as few resources as they had. The redistribution for said territory happened kind of unofficially, given the big man wasn’t there to patrol everything and give orders to people. He probably writhed in his grave when it happened but nobody gives a shit he was a terrible fucking person <3
- Most, if not all people from the Caede family are blind in on their right eye, which earned them a big reputation for being cyclopses. For a long time no one knew what exactly caused them to be like that, so it was thought to be just a ritualistic rite of passage within the family. Nowadays, people don’t question it because there’s only 2 Alive And Relevant Caedes that are actually prominent, and as far as they care they’re just regular bandits and not anyone with a reputation to upkeep, so they don’t care either.
- They weren’t a big name anywhere outside the one specific area of southeast Pandora they were ruling, so once they moved the reputation that their name held kinda died alongside it. Everyone should be thankful for this.
- See the thing is. They are actually cursed for real by a vault beast called The Accursed. It happened several dozens of generations ago after one particular Caede Fucked Around with its vault and Found Out in the most Extreme sense of the word, and it still continues affecting them today. This doesn’t make them cool and they are mostly unaware it happens in general.
Symptoms of Curse include but are not limited to: Hallucinations, Extreme hyper-awareness, Heightened senses (in a way that fucks with your head and is usually not helpful), Paranoid behaviors, Hearing your dead family members shouting at you from beyond the grave, Having an incessant calling for human flesh, Acute tummy ache when you eat things that aren’t human flesh during periods of Craving, being unable to die unless its in the most painful possible way etc.
- Archer had control over this territory for approximately 3 days after Lucio died, but then he gathered up his brother, mother and some other close friends and decided to just fuck off and be a bounty hunter group in the wastes instead. The clan he belonged to (The Bloody Razors) got absorbed into other factions not too long after, which was probably for the best.
- The only reason why Archer never lost his eye but Jonah did is because he’s just so paranoid about survival the curse just never has an opportunity to mark him as a goner. Jonah fell perfectly into its hands, and it molded him into the kind of receptacle it needed to continue the cycle of its existence, but Archer keeps narrowly avoiding things by just planning extensively for every possible situation.
- He often worries this means a much worse ending is awaiting him, so he tries his best to be invincible by outsmarting date itself while it chases after him. Because hes so normal and regular and stuff (<- the nefarious OCD)
- They’re all so so normal. I prommy. You can approach them they’re just a regular ol family
i looooove characters who are sacrificial lamb coded. characters who have never lived for themselves. characters born to be a tool, a weapon, a sacrifice, all of the above. a character raised by the heroes to save the world, at any expense, even their own health, even their own life. a character raised by the villains to end the world, at any expense, even their own health, even their own life. characters who are denied personhood so they can be used as tools instead. characters who never even had a chance to be people because they were shaped into something else from the moment they were born. characters who were born to die.
if baron flynt already had the vault key fragments, wouldnt it have been easier for jack to convince him to open the vault instead of hiring vault hunters to do it? is he stupid?
okay so! in my rewrite, grogmouth is working under baron’s orders when he kidnaps angel, and he brings her to thor. though everything after is still canon complaint. her parents still come looking and her mom still dies.
angel uses her phaseshift and the digistruct capabilities of the control core as “what could have been” wish fulfillment. she recreates places she sees on the satellite cameras and people she speaks to. she does this with the BL1 vault hunters as well (and jack, when she’s feeling vulnerable.) she’s playing dolls, essentially.
baron was the last person she met before being locked away, so she fixates on him pretty heavily. her “baron” represents the trauma of losing her mother and all of the resentment that comes with it. (what if jack died too, what if her parents never showed up, ect.) he is a very very bitter part of her.
this continues until the age of like. 15. “baron” tries to kill jack which causes him to tighten the leash on her phaseshift and she isnt able to mimic people anymore.
but i liked the idea of angel sticking with baron so i kept it in a more contained BL1 au where she never makes it off of thor and becomes a bandit.
their dynamic is very strained and ends up being more mentor-student than father-daughter. he initially was going to use her as a bargaining chip with atlas and his actions still result in her mother being killed. so they start off terribly.
BL1 happens a few years later. baron actually does his job this time and tries to prevent the vault from being opened because he worries abt the damage itll do to the planet. its becomes a three way war between the bandits, atlas, and the VHs, as pandora tries to defend itself from corporate exploits.
angel still keeps in contact with the BL1 VHs but instead of being a mysterious voice on the radio shes more like a kid shit talking them in a discord vc. its not a very serious au lmfao.
I like to think Angel is very messed up in many ways <3 here’s me talking about that.
Being isolated from everyone since from ages 9 through 18 does that to you, but just the fact she never had the ability to talk to anyone in true conversation (aside from Jack) would probably result in her being extremely uncanny a lot of the time. For example, she stares unblinkingly at people a lot, because that’s how it needed to be in order to use her phaseshift abilities when she was talking to, say, the vault hunters. Now that she’s physically sharing a space with others though, she’s not sure what to do with her facial expressions or body, so she just stands completely still, quietly going 👁👁 until the conversation ends.
Another thing I think about often is how she manages control. She hates being told what to do at this point, getting extremely defensive towards people if she feels they are ‘forcing’ something on her to the point of snapping. She’s also very paranoid that she’s unconsciously being manipulated by everyone around her, so she keeps her distance and doesn’t let anyone close unless she absolutely needs it. A way to keep herself in control is often to cut all her hair off and keep it however SHE wants it, because SHE wanted it to be, and it’s HER body to do whatever SHE WANTS. She is not above pushing everyone away and WILL do it if things start feeling suffocating.
. She’s like a stressed parrot pretty much.

ITS SO…esp with the way roland talks about her when theyre planning out how to get to the bunker, its so depersonalizing. and i understand why he would be that way because he’s spent the last five years thinking shes a machine, and now a machine with malicious intent, but :(
literally every single named ai in the series shows human levels of sentience and emotional capability but they are clearly seen as having less autonomy. claptrap ofc is the most obvious answer but it also extends to felicity and balex ect. but by being forced to take the role of an ai angel also experiences that same treatment even from people she has known since she was a child.

nadia - 2nd gen fleshripper! though her parents are both long since dead. she isnt involved in a lot of active fighting that her clan does and doesn’t leave the interior or the soaring dragon very often. she was one of the fleets navigators and got hell for it from flynt whenever they got caught in the flash freeze.
ruiz - old boat engineer that lived in the bay who is forced to run maintenance on the fleshripper’s ships. he goes along because the faster he can get them off of the glacier the faster that theyll leave them the hell alone. but he makes things Much worse when he tries to take more drastic measures to ward them off.
flyntlock - originally was a part of baron’s crew but pushed to the fleshrippers when he died instead of joining the bloodshots. may or may not be a straight up robot (?) instead of a cyborg like most of the other rippers. hes kind of third wheeling captains marriage. its a little embarrassing.
titania - meets hammerlock when she catches him out hunting and they are uhm. well they almost made it to being friends! almost. but she values the wants of her clan over him + the other residents of liars berg so when captain gives the order she starts knocking down doors. shes got a very direct way of thinking and though she acknowledges what the fleshrippers are doing is wrong, it doesnt stop her.
mutya flynt - sparky’s mama :(. outlives both her husband and her son and is in charge of whatever’s left of the fleshrippers when BL3 comes around though theyre not really pirates anymore. she has her men stick to the water because its far out of the COVs interest. shes in hyperion custody during borderlands 2 and misses most of the fighting. she also wants 2 attack zane with hammers.
jenny-mae hodunk (flynt) - politically engaged to sparky but they never make it to the wedding for. vault hunter reasons. was born and raised in the hodunk clan and took the absolute first chance she could to get out of there. shes moxxis niece! though shes young enough that she doesnt really remember her.

hi!! so the way i get the audio is by using this. just download it, unzip the file, and put the required directories where it asks. then you just wait for all the files to be extracted.
for ease of use, i put a new folder on my desktop and dump all of the files in there. it makes it easier to find them to convert into mp3 files to upload to tumblr.

as for maya, im not sure if she has any special cut dialogue in BL2 because the VHs dont speak much outside of combat. i did a quick look through her files and i didnt find anything that sounded new. but i also havent looked at the BL3 files yet so its possible she could still have some in there!

but nisha lived and died on her own terms because of her connection to pandora. yeah, the vault hunters still kill her in the end, but the fight itself was for her own sport, not for hyperion.
if it was just about protecting jack’s interests, she would have never let the vault hunters touch lynchwood’s bank or the mines. she would have killed them the second they stepped foot into her town, but she didn’t. its why i think the ambush is such a miss on her character. she would have done it herself, win or lose.
but i also think it was only a matter of time until hyperion got her too. if jack had won in the end he would have turned on lynchwood as well. there are no exceptions to fascism. and nisha would have fought back because, like jack, she holds her personal ideals above whatever love they might have had.
Despite his demeanor, Archer tends to be the more dangerous Caede to be around any given time. Jonah may be rude, unsociable and ill tempered, but the thing about all of that is at least he is verbally telling you to go away and that he does not like you. When Archer has a problem with something, he will NEVER say it outloud, opting instead to lovebomb people until they trust him enough for him to stab them in the back where it hurts most. Even if you catch subtle hints of whatever is hiding under his overly friendly demeanor,it will probably already be too late. This guy plans out meticulous betrayals to leave people behind to die, steal everything they own and then remain guiltless. Do not be alone with this man his intent is BAD.
