thinking about. in campaign of carnage there’s two quests back to back where the VHs murder around fifty people because torgue just tells them to.

one being to kill exactly 21 bandits because the alcohol in pyro petes bar had been poisoned. so the solution was…to kill them before the poison does.

the game acknowledges this through the mission log where the VHs just shrug their shoulders and go. “well, we’re still getting paid.”

and the second is torgue sending you to go kill a bunch of bandit video game reviewers (?) because they left a bad review on a game he liked. which haha funny gearbox joke whatever. but the quest objective is literally to Leave No Survivors. over a video game review.

the VHs have always been on the side of corporate interest, even when it’s less about pandoran politics and more - “oh our super rich ceo friend is paying us money to kill people he doesnt like in his vault competition that is an active detriment to the population around it.”

and sometimes this feels like a BL2 VH specific issue? bc theyre the most vicious out of all of the games (even when playing the Bad Guys™ in TPS), and there’s not even an excuse of necessity that you could argue for the BL1 and BL3 VHs.

like. what is their problem…

Makes me little sad when I remember b.orderlands is hella bigoted sometimes because I genuinely love so many of the characters they botched/forgot about due to bias….. Kat Jr, Yvette, Fiona, Sasha, Aurelia, Mordecai to some extent, Nisha, Helena Pierce, Captain Scarlett, The Calypsos, and you know what, Leda too. So much lost potential because they want to prioritize all the wrong things and analyze None of them. Like sometimes I get mad Kat got like 30 minutes of screentime and question why they wouldn’t utilize him more, but then I remember this is the same team that made big game hunt (antiblack and antinative) and the enemies in pirates booty (orientalist) and I go Ohhhhh yeah these people like are white and stupid I forgot….

And like, obviously this is all bad, even Pandora as a concept feels kind of orientalist in its foundation just from how loosely people are willing to throw around the world “savage” in this game when referring to desperate people in a desertic planet, but I don’t know. There’s so much to like. I just often get upset over how much of it is hidden underneath layers and layers of unchecked biases against minorities the (mostly western, mostly white, mostly male) writers clearly were not thinking about while making this game and this world. I’m always going to be invested in it and I will always like it, but I feel it’s important for me to remember that these were choices made consciously by living breathing people who knew what they were doing and should be held accountable for them.

Also because I don’t wanna have any of the racist stuff, you know ? I don’t want to leave it in as I’m taking apart and expanding this world, or at least not leave it unchecked. I think the game would be way better if it took a very specifically anti-racist stanced and invited the player to think “Hey, isn’t it kind of fucked up you’re mowing down several people in the name of profit and material gain ? Or that you’re technically always siding with corporations even when they’re supposedly opposing you ?” Because I think these are genuinely interesting questions. But so long as the priority in the game is “Fun looty shooty game where you kill people indiscriminately don’t ask questions about it PLEEEEASE”, I don’t think it’ll ever progress past it.

Anyway maybe this game would be better storywise if the writers read Orientalism first. And The Capital by Karl Marx at the very least. You wanna be anticapitalist ? Then act like it you fuckass videogame that costs money !!!!

promising angel lore but its actually a trojan horse for class traitor wainwright being introduced to pandoran politics. i can imagine anything.

tomcat,,,,imagine if u were just born one day out of the ground and you're forced into keeping up the identity of a stranger, in which you inherit all of his enemies and loved ones who want YOU to be him so badly. and now you have to fight his war + be nice to his wife, who you DO love but you don't know if she'd love you as the person you are now. but you also fall in love with the guy who wanted to commit murder-suicide with you by nuke. <- oversimplification.

playing through BL1 again. fuck this guy.

i find it really interesting how the issue of morality between hyperion and the raiders in BL2 is always defaulted to jack vs lilith and not jack vs roland. i also do it literally All Of The Time.

but. lilith hasnt really done anything to represent the raiders in-between BL1 and 2. she had to go into hiding about a yyyear? two years? after the group was formed and didn't become their leader until after jack’s death. every action the raiders took up until that point was under roland’s orders.

purging the bloodshots (twice), abandoning liar’s berg, recruiting war profiteers from atlas and dahl, and unmitigated slaughter on a scale that only a team of hired vault hunters can commit? that was all roland, not lilith.

roland and angel’s deaths are the emotional turning point of the game, so it gets personal between her and jack, but she didn’t actually have much to do with the war effort itself until the very end. the story is still framed as a rivalry between them, especially with the addition of lilith scarring him in TPS, and roland's role as a leader is never really weighed against jack in the way that lilith's is.

i just wish we got to see the actual War part of the uh. war. instead of catching the tail end of it and missing years of conflict between roland and jack specifically. <- world's most obvious roland main to ever exist.

by FAR my favorite part of angels character is how determined she is to stop jack once the curtain falls. its instant, theres no hesitation.

she knows exactly what needs to be done and she gets straight to the point about it. her outburst during the raider meeting. threatening to airlock the helios engineers. cursing out jack over the radio. if shes going down, shes going down swinging.

“Oil company Chevron must pay $744.6 million to restore damage it caused to southeast Louisiana’s coastal wetlands, a jury ruled on Friday [April 4, 2025] following a landmark trial more than a decade in the making.

The case was the first of dozens of pending lawsuits to reach trial in Louisiana against the world’s leading oil companies for their role in accelerating land loss along the state’s rapidly disappearing coast. The verdict – which Chevron says it will appeal – could set a precedent leaving other oil and gas firms on the hook for billions of dollars in damages tied to land loss and environmental degradation...

The jury awarded $575 million to compensate for land loss, $161 million to compensate for contamination and $8.6 million for abandoned equipment. The amount earmarked for restoration exceeds $1.1 billion when including interest, according to attorneys for Talbot, Carmouche & Marcello, the firm behind the lawsuit.

Plaquemines Parish, the southeast Louisiana district which brought the lawsuit, had asked for $2.6 billion in damages…

How are oil companies contributing to Louisiana’s land loss?

The lawsuit against Chevron was filed in 2013 by Plaquemines Parish, a rural district in Louisiana straddling the final leg of the Mississippi River heading into the Gulf of Mexico, also referred to as the Gulf of America as declared by President Donald Trump.

Louisiana’s coastal parishes have lost more than 2,000 square miles (5,180 square kilometers) of land over the past century, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, which has also identified oil and gas infrastructure as a significant cause. The state could lose another 3,000 square miles (7,770 square kilometers) in the coming decades, its coastal protection agency has warned

Thousands of miles of canals cut through the wetlands by oil companies weakens them and exacerbates the impacts of sea level rise. Industrial wastewater from oil production degrades the surrounding soil and vegetation. The torn up wetlands leave South Louisiana – home to some of the nation’s biggest ports and key energy sector infrastructure – more vulnerable to flooding and destruction from extreme weather events like hurricanes…

Attorney Jimmy Faircloth, Jr., who represented the state of Louisiana, which has backed Plaquemines and other local governments in their lawsuits against oil companies, told jurors from the parish that Chevron was telling them their community was not worth preserving.

“Our communities are built on coast, our families raised on coast, our children go to school on coast,” Faircloth said. “The state of Louisiana will not surrender the coast, it’s for the good of the state that the coast be maintained.”

What does this mean for future litigation against oil companies?

Louisiana’s economy has long been heavily dependent on the oil and gas industry and the industry holds significant political power. Even so, Louisiana’s staunchly pro-industry Gov. Jeff Landry has supported the lawsuits, including bringing the state on board during his tenure as Attorney General.

Oil companies have fought tooth and nail to quash the litigation, including unsuccessfully lobbying Louisiana’s Legislature to pass a law to invalidate the claims. Chevron and other firms also repeatedly tried to move the lawsuits into federal court where they believed they would find a more sympathetic audience.

But the heavy price Chevron is set to pay could hasten other firms to seek settlements in the dozens of other lawsuits across Louisiana. Plaquemines alone has 20 other cases pending against oil companies.

The state is running out of money to support its ambitious coastal restoration plans, which have been fueled by soon-expiring settlement funds from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and supporters of the litigation say payouts could provide a much-needed injection of funds…

Attorneys for the parish said they hope that big payout will prompt more oil companies to come to the table to negotiate and channel more funding towards coastal restoration.

“Our energy is focused on securing appropriate verdicts and awards for every parish involved in these actions,” Carmouche said in a statement. “If we continue to be successful in our efforts, these parishes, and Louisiana, will have sent a clear message that Louisiana’s future must be built around a new balance between our energy industry and environmental necessities.””

HIIII can i do two,,,would love 2 see what you have for miss verity. 👉👈 i think ive talked abt her a good bit but. fought for autonomy her whole life, even though everything she did was predetermined to ensure angel's birth and death. very headstrong woman turned bitter for her inability to change her fate.

magnuficentwo:

OF COURSE YOU CAN !!! Another one I think a lot about cuz your ocs all. Give me some sort of brain worm tbh, but I think “Garden” by the Crane wives is a strong contender here.

Woman whose family grave was already dug before she even had an opportunity to get up from her cradle and who’s coping Really Well with it 👍

Or another good option would be “Dark Skies” by Brick + Mortar because these lyrics kill me on impact !

wainwrightjakobshammerlock:

my beautiful daughter who is wanted in 365 countries

as much as i like the angel is a jakobs theory, there is also a very big appeal to me of her Not having that outside connection. existing only to jack and the player.

and i think it goes hand in hand with the concept of angel surviving the control core as well. it’s an idea im obsessed with, but i also think a lot about the alternative. mainly about the aftermath of her death being handled properly, and being mourned alongside roland.

she was born, she lived, and she died, and there are just a select few who knew her. everyone else will only have second hand memories.

HI !!!! QUESTIONS BEAM !!!!! 5, 8 and 13 for Verity, 4, 21 and 30 for Titania, 24, 27 and 30 for Mad Mal and 32, 33 and 34 for Mutya pretty pleases !! <33 doesn't need to be all of these I love listening either way<3

HIIIIHIIIHIIIIII!!!!

Verity

5. Is your character more of a family or friends person?

Family! Verity does not hang out with anyone casually at all, especially not after she moves away from home. She’s happiest with her family or completely alone, with no in-between. She is very lucky she isn’t an only child because otherwise she would have grown up very lonely.

8. What are some internal obstacles that your character has to overcome?

Verity’s main internal struggle is that she can do nothing about the external ones. She is a Very independent and self-assured person, so when she feels herself being caged in she panics. And it’s not really something she’s ever able to overcome.

She’s raised under Monty’s expectations, manipulated by the Watcher’s visions, and then when she finally gets her rest, Ned brings her back. She fights back against every step of the way, but it doesn’t change anything. Which makes her want to Explode.

13. Who is the closest person to your character?

Wainwright forever and always </3. Of course she loves Angel and she Thinks she loves John but no one has ever been able to bring her away from the edge like he has. It’s why it was necessary for Verity to leave home and be separated from him.

Titania

4. Does your character care about their reputation and/or how others perceive them?

Yes! All of the trapped Rippers must have some level of awareness of their position within the ranks, the flash-freeze has made everything very tense. Lieutenants that aren’t respected get usurped and grunts with no reputation what-so-ever are disposable. Titania is somewhere in the upper-middle of the hierarchy, which gives her some leeway, but she is not at all immune to conflict with her peers and superiors.

21. What is your character’s relationship with their emotions?

By nature Titania is very empathetic, which is why she needs to drive such a deep wedge between herself and her emotions while she works. Very much a “get the job done and cry about it later” kind of deal. Even though she. Physically can’t cry anymore. No tear ducts. Sad.

30. Is your character hiding something from other people, if so, what?

She’s hiding a lot. She covers up extreme circumstances from both sides of the Southern Shelf conflict to avoid further escalation. It works for the first month or two and she’s able to avoid a lot of people dying but all of her work shatters once Ruiz kills Jenny. After that she cuts her losses and focuses solely on working with the Rippers.

Mad Mal

24. From childhood to their current age, how has your character changed?

Mal had to grow up fast during the transition between BL1 and BL2. Her family was apart of Baron’s crew, and during the Bloodshot’s original formation there was a lot of turmoil. Her dad gets exiled, her aunt goes missing, her grandfather is. Well he’s fine but he just exists in general which is enough. And as the oldest of the cousins she takes it upon herself to help raise them while Raguel is away at war.

Though even as a kid, she’s always been pretty intense and headstrong. She’s just able to do something about it now.

27. How does your character view themselves? (Expectations, intelligence, confidenc
e, self-belief, etc.)

Mal is a soldier. She is ready to die for her family and her clan, and during the worst parts of the Hyperion war, she genuinely believes that’s what’s going to happen to her.

30. Is your character hiding something from other
people, if so, what?

Ooh fun question for Mal. After her aunt Sagittarius goes missing she starts going after the Hyperion spies that’ve been hunting down bandit women. She kills a few guys, gets shot a few times, and gets her shiny pink Invader off of Assassin Rouf’s corpse. She views it as a net positive, overall.

Also she’s been visiting her dad in exile. But that’s not as fun as a revenge quest.

Mutya

32. How does your character view their past?

Mutya does her very best not to dwell on the past. She’s experienced a lot of loss in a very short amount of time. Her husband, her son. Her entire clan, essentially. Everyone bandit who makes it to old age on Pandora has a lot of pain that they’re carrying with them, and Mutya can’t afford to let it distract her.

She does think about the early years sometimes, though. When Sparky was a baby. It’s bittersweet.

33. What are three positive traits that your character has?

Patience, intelligence, and a level head, everything that makes a good leader. She’s in charge of the largest COV resistance on Pandora, so she’s gotta be smart about what she’s doing. She also wears Eridium jewelry which is sick as hell even if its unhealthy. Who gaf. 60+ years on Pandora its not gonna be some little rock that does her in.

34. What are three negative traits that your character has?

She’s apathetic at times, and avoidant of acknowledging personal issues. While there are a lot of members of her crew that want to connect with the past, try and rebuild after the COV, Mutya wants to stick to the water. At this point she’s nearly lost hope in ever having a unified Pandora that doesn’t come with some great and horrible cost.

continuously annoyed by how often borderlands displays the casual brutalization of women. oftentimes even faceless, nameless women at that.

im specifically talking about BL2s false sirens here. it is a few lines of dialogue in a side quest at the beginning of the game and yet i still irritated by it every time i play it.

in assassinate the assassins, roland sends you after a group of hyperion workers that have infiltrated bandit groups in an effort to hunt down lilith. instead, these men murder random women to dress up their corpses as sirens for the off-chance of making bank through hyperion. it is, by definition, femicide.

according to jack, they murdered at least a dozen women. note that these are likely bandit women, which means they have no means of protection from corporate interests, not even from the raiders. they only intervened because one of their own was being targeted.

but because we are getting this dialogue from jack, who is a misogynist himself, the game treats this with humor. there’s not any actual weight given to these women’s deaths, and as a a part of an optional quest with no further commentary, they are ultimately meaningless.

my piece for the @borderlandszine ! i loved drawing shade and zombie tk! borderlands has so many npcs that deserve a spotlight!

looking through old screenshots of burchs ask.fm and i found these. nisha rescues angel au real,,,

on the topic of the hyperion assassins, their designs are flawed. hyperion couldn’t even care enough about the populations they’re harming to properly infiltrate them.

oney is what i presume to be a bloodshot nomad, but he has no specific clan markings. it made him originally unidentifiable to me because of it, added onto his unique head gear. he also is the only nomad in the game to not use his shield whatsoever. (aside from mad mike, who is also a bloodshot nomad with has no shield at all.)

wots design is an tossup between slab and sawtooth. the shape of it is slab, the shoulders, the mohawk, but its all in yellow. he also spawns with a badass sawtooth despite southpaw being bloodshot territory.

these are two clans who are at war with one another, and while some slabs DO wear yellow, it is only in segments of their armor, not all of it. he would absolutely be viewed as a slab by the sawteeth and vice versa.

reeth is also a combination of two different clans who are currently at war with one another. the bloodshots and the children of the firehawk. he would theoretically be a bloodshot, but he doesnt have the tattoos despite being swarmed with other bandits who do.

but fire enemies of his type are clan exclusive in this game, locked only to the cotf, unlike in BL1 where they are all over.

rouf is actually different to me. i think he WAS actually a bandit before turning traitor and working with hyperion. his bodytype is specific to rats, and hyperion is confirmed to work with them at least through the mines in lynchwood. his bright green outfit and respirator are also unique to himself.

he and wots also use hyperion guns. for…no specific reason, im sure.

and personally i find this all Very Fun. it makes them uncanny, where their appearances would be off to the bandits around them, but the differences would go unseen by the raiders or hyperion. it is corporation trying to get you to buy into a language they themselves do not understand.

because. realistically. they’d walk into their respective bandit camps and immediately get questioned if not shot at for what they’re wearing.
