Re-blogging & Re-posting

Hi, You might know this already but on Tumblr, re-blogging and re-posting are not the same.
Re-blogging is when you click the re-blog button from the original post or re-blogged post to bring the image to your own blog. Which automatically displays the source of the original poster and thus, the original poster can keep track of who’s sharing his/her art. This is what you should be doing on Tumblr because it’s respectful to the original poster.
Where as re-posting is if you were to save the image/art you like on to your computer and then creating a brand new post with it. This is a bad thing to do on tumblr even if you don’t claim/steal the art as your own because the original poster can’t track how their creation is being spread and also because you have an easy alternate option to re-blog instead of re-post.
Now, this unspoken rule of re-blog/re-post only works on tumblr and you don’t have an option to re-blog something from tumlbr directly to other social media sites (example: facebook, twitter)
In this case, the polite thing to do would be to send a note to the original poster by using the “ask” function and ask for permission if you could post their work on your site that’s on another social media site. If they say yes, then be sure to indicate the link of the original post when you’re making a new post with that art.
If it’s a case where, you want to directly add something to the a pre-existing image(ex: add a quote, make into collage), make the modification and use the re-blog function to show your modification of the art, OR you can ask for a permission from the original poster and include the link to their original to your new posting.
At the end of the day, it’s about showing a respect to the artist/poster by leading the audience to their original site/source.
