• Does Elayne place value in how her protectorate sees her? Does this sway her decisions at all?

She absolutely does. In her life, Elayne always cared about her subjects and subordinates, and it actually goes way back at being a part of the Talon Sydnicate.

Directing a relatively small secluded cartelle of the organization, she knew almost everyone personally and bonded with members of her crew. Being a co-manager beside her sworn brother, together they’ve established a highly effective chain of command to ensure everything goes out smoothly so every and each link wasn’t compromised. She sees mutual trust as a gravely important aspect for her staff and she wants to trust her people in return, so she’s doing everything to gain it. If something is rarely going not according the plan or her subordinates are not satisfied with something, she would improvise to get an outcome which leaves both parties happy.

So I think of course she’d carried that knowledge with her. Running a Protectorate on a much grander scale may prove more tricky and overwhelming than running a small organization for her at times. But she tries her best at being a head of the dynasty, to know what people would like to hear and want, what priorities to get into, and of course to always approach thoughtfully, seeking compromise in questions that stand before her and the prosperity of her Protectorate. It’s a thing that she’s familiar with. So yeah, that’s it.

OH I love these!!!!! I’m so happy to finally dump some more of my headcanons into the air it’s such a relief!! Thank you sm for asking💖💖💖

• Where is Elayne from? What is her homeworld like? Does she miss it?

She originates from a merchant cruiser, being a voidborn in several generations. She doesn’t miss her origin ship as it filthy place reminds her of the stench of lower decks where she grew up. But after she was welcomed into the other family, she moved first to upped decks, then in a bit later when she grew up a bit she jumped with her brother several times from one ship to another while looking for work in questionable places, scavenging around, before plunging together into a cold trading business.

She feels much more comfortable being aboard, as being on a vast surface of a planet under an open sky gives her a mild headache and sense of vulnerability sometimes. But she’s able to slowly acclimate around if work demands to stay on the surface.

• Was there a defining moment in Elayne’s life that influenced her Conviction?

I think perhaps when she met her brother while trying not to starve, when he shared his food with her, an unnamed beggar girl and offered her some clothes. He was a role model for her entire life and probably many of her Iconoclast patterns vere picked up from him. Like being kind and benevolent to others. :>

• Who amongst her retinue she closest to?

I think besides Heinrix, she’s closest to probably Idira and Abelard.

She loves Idira’s joyful demeanor and openness, it reminded her of a good times when working with Vince and her gang, where people were joyful as Idira is, being passionate and outspoken. Conversing with her is always a pleasant time.

And she greatly bonded with her Senechal. While she was under care of Theodora’s medicae, healing the damage that explosion caused to her, she was under his constant watch and after all it was his responsibility to ensure the lost and long awaited heir on who he was wasting so much time and resources to retrieve survives.

And throughout the whole Prologue and Chapter I, it was a darker times for her which she struggled mentally and physically, being suddenly threwn into the rule while not properly healed and recovered first. And Abelard helped her to carry a burden of the Rogue Trader mantle tremendously. They shared familiar views, not without arguing on the matters of course, but he was much like a father figure.

I also headcanon her first encounter with Heinrix was very different. She she passed out all of a sudden in Abelard’s arms, shaking and convulsing, as she had some sort of a seizure or stroke happening in her damaged skull as she was heading with her retinue to that first chamber. He then immediately asked Heinrix “Why are you standing here boy, HELP HER???” so Heirnrix HAD to immediately switch in a moment to his healing abilities right after from torturing hehehe

And of course after all, Heinrix became the one who helped her to finally heal her trauma, overcome the grief and loss and to ease her constant suffering from nightmares.

• How do Elayne feels about becoming a Rogue Trader? How easily does she take to being the head of the von Valancius dynasty?

It was a hardest challenge for her from the very start. She did not took it well at all, she was in denial and it almost broke her at first.

She didn’t have much time to think, to react, to process all the events that was unfolding under her very own eyes. By the beginning of Prologue when Theodora summoned her to introduce and initiate her as a heir to the dynasty, she woke up from several weeks of coma and her condition stabilized just enough to be able to walk by her own with her augmentic implants. But it was still too soon, she resembled a hollow shell of herself: her mind blank, her mental health unstable and it was very hard for her to cope with reality and to function without stimulators and painkillers.

Through all the Prologue and Chapter 1 she relied mostly on the advice of Abelard, heavily masking as the Dogmatic-adherent to not appear weak. She was this easy to influence. (destruction of Rykad Minoris and some other dogmatic choices like killing Abel (poor guy ;-; I’ll save him hext time I SWEAR))

At last, by the time of somewhere in Act 2 Elayne’s condition finally improved enough, she was visibly stronger to finally gather some willpower and make decisions of her own. But she was still overwhelmed with the burden.

With the passing of time she finally accepted her title of being the powerful figure in Expanse.

• What is Elayne’s Archetype?

She’s an Operative/Assassin who possesses a mind of an analyst and does what she do best: she’s an adept of reading people, determining their strong sides and weaknesses, then using this for her advantage to strike with the most precision.

• Wildcard: Share a fun fact, random thought, or headcanon about her!

Ohhhh, I love it, let’s go random facts! :D When Elayne overheard that encrypted conversation exchange between Heinrix and his agent Achilleas Scalander, it surely peaked her curiosity and she couldn’t get it out of her head. She found it fascinating and has been almost certain she cracked the code of what they were talking about, so being a highly intellectual individual the encrypted manner intrigued her.

And as they got close enough, Heinrix introduced to her his form of glossia that Elayne quickly picked up. They from now on often used their own glossia cipher that they’ve been developing further together on the go, when conversing something they deem private or communicating while on a missions, making up a new metaphoric patterns and constructions every time which both of them understand by heart.

P.S btw also lately I’ve been enjoying Dan Abnett’s ’Inquisitor’ series SOOO MUCH I’m really digging it. And ’Eisenhorn’ trilogy is just insanely good! Please read it if you didn’t yet and if you love Rogue Trader’s narrative and Heinrix writing especially, it has a similar feel fr.

And it touches topic of the use of glossia really extensively and it’s been used quite often throughout the novels, in case if you’re also curious how does it work. I just fell in love with it’s linguistics formation and I headcanon their glossia form would be even more poetic!

Which three skills are of the most value to her?

• Logic

Smartsies and cunning, the things she’s an adept of! This is the skill that I maxxed first for her, and oh dear the work actually got paid off in the end! (Kiava Gamma end project) which was very helpful. Intelligence is her primary stat and it shows. (she’ll eventually catch a meme-virus in her old years trust my word, else why so smart)

• Tech-Use

Pasqal got a nice competition there, but they both kinda went hand in hand studying the tech shit together until Pasqal got better than her in the end xdd She’s fascinated by the works of machinery and admechs in general.

• Lore: Warp (tbh all the lore skills)

The warp flames touched her skin in the explosion, Ruinous Powers marked her with their influence, forever affecting her mental state and whispering in her dreams nightmares, the near-death experience granting a slight sense of understanding of the Warp phenomena, much for her own displeasure.

Honestly, each of the Lore skills share the value as she has a vast Intellect (big brain goes big yo) so they all were in equal expertise in her Int build. And yeah, from the lore point as well, that every other aspect is important and plays it’s role in her biz like: Lore: Xenos is work related to operate with Cold Trading, xenoartifacts and stuff. And Lore: Imperium - she gotta know all about the stuff like it’s structure, ways and shit, to be a responsible Cold Trader that values their skin and the lives of her associates.
